Billions of dollars in cash "missing" in Iraq

Post by kyoukan »

Feb. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Representative Henry Waxman, kicking off hearings on government contracting, questioned former Ambassador L. Paul Bremer today on what happened to as much as $12 billion in unaccounted-for cash spent when he was in charge of rebuilding Iraq.

A report from Waxman's House Oversight and Government Reform Committee said the money represented more than half of Bremer's budget from May 2003 to June 2004. The report described contractors being told to bring big bags to collect shrink- wrapped bundles of money and one episode where a Bremer staff member was allegedly told to spend $6.75 million in a week.

``We have no way of knowing if the cash that was shipped into the green zone ended up in enemy hands,'' Waxman, a California Democrat, said at today's hearing. ``We owe it to the American people to do everything we can to find out where the $12 billion went.''

The hearings, which fulfill a Democratic campaign promise, will spotlight the use of contractors in Iraq and on homeland security under President George W. Bush, as well as spending on Medicare and Medicaid. The hearings ``will embarrass the administration,'' said James Thurber, a political science professor at American University and expert on government oversight.
Totally unreal. Apparently entire fucking palletes of cold, hard US cash completely vanishedages ago and was never reported to anyone until recently. 363 TONS of $100 bills that no one bothered to report that someone took. All money from the federal reserve. Money belonging to the US taxpayers. Gone.

What the hell is going on? Did you people really re-elect this?

If you can't use power to pad the pockets of your cronies with tax payer money, then what good is power?

It was not the Taxpayers money, Again you spread your lies!

"The money, which had been held by the United States, came from Iraqi oil exports, surplus dollars from the U.N.-run oil-for-food program and frozen assets belonging to the ousted Saddam Hussein regime."

Second of all the money was requested by the Iraq government.

Now that the dems are in control of both the house and senate, I predict this forum will be getting much more lively again.

As to the story, So according to Cart, it's not ok if it's taxpayer money b ut it is ok if US contractors stole billions of dollars that rightfully belong to the Iraqi people.

But hey, as long as Cart isn't getting fucked sideways, it's all good.

Here's a question for you: If we're supposed to pay US companies with $12B in Iraqi money, and said money disappears, who pays Haliburton? Because they sure as shit aren't just going to do it for free.

Connect the dots.

Connect the dots.
The Iraq Government will have to pay them: the money was requested by the Iraq government and transfered to the government, It was their money and they asked for it. So we transfered it to them.

"Bremer: Cash requested by Iraqis
L. Paul Bremer, who as the administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority ran Iraq after initial combat operations ended, said the enormous shipments were done at the request of the Iraqi minister of finance.

"He said, 'I am concerned that I will not have the money to support the Iraqi government expenses for the first couple of months after we are sovereign. We won't have the mechanisms in place, I won't know how to get the money here,"' Bremer said.

"So these shipments were made at the explicit request of the Iraqi minister of finance to forward fund government expenses, a perfectly, seems to me, legitimate use of his money," Bremer told lawmakers."

Shrug. They weren't facts that I ignored, I didn't even see that second article Kyoukan linked until I was trying to find his quotes in it. I'm just proud of him for actually reading the whole article and presenting a grammatically correct argument. Good job, Cart!

And I'll admit, I was totally wrong. It's completely reasonable and intelligent to ship $12B in US cash into a war zone that we scarcely have any control over, and I'm now confident that since it was all Iraqi money that it's not going to cost the US taxpayers a single dime. Everything is running swimmingly and the people in charge are doing a great job!

I'm sorry we require unsequenced $100 bills in a burlap sack behind the 3rd alley off main street in Fallujah

The money came from the federal reserve. It belongs to Americans. Just because it is not the exact same dollar bill that was used when you paid your income tax does not mean it does not belong to the American taxpayers.

I'm amazed that even a partisan parrot like yourself would not be outraged over this. But then I remembered you're a fucking mongloid.

You don't even have to say this part.
"THE MONEY WAS FROM SIEZED IRAQ ASSETS"
The money was from the federal reserve. It says so right in the article. I'm going to get into a Cartalas level arguement where you shout 'NO IT WASN'T' and then I shout 'YES IT WAS' for six hours. If fucking says right in the article that the money came from the federal reserve. YOUR MONEY.

Sometimes I wonder if you're secretly a neoconservative genius, and you purposely derail threads away from the actual topic by making everyone marvel at your stupidity.

Let me put it this way, maybe in terms someone of your position can understand.

Kyoukan you go out and have a good night you turn 10 or 11 good tricks and you come back to your pimp, opps I mean husband and you give him your $250 ( and $25 is really pushing it for a night of fun with you), now he takes his normal $200 cut becuase crack and your meds are expensive and you ask him to hold the other $50 for ya. now whos money is it.
