Dogs

Post by Moonwynd »

Hi everyone,

I lost my dog of 14 years back in early October. A few months passed - it was rough not having him around every day. He was a great dog - was there through the birth of my daughter - a divorce - remarriage - birth of my second daughter. He lived a good, long life and will always be missed.

In mid December I started looking for a dog again. My dearly departed dog was named Spock - a Jack Russell Terrier. I wanted to go with something bigger this time. My qualifications for a dog were:

Good with children
Even tempered
Moderate to high activity level
Easy to groom
Have a long snout (I like dogs with a longer muzzle as opposed to pug faced dogs - personal aesthetic preference)

After much searching and discussions with various breeders, I chose the Ibizan Hound.

So this Saturday I get to go cross country to pick up my dog. He has a long AKC champion name that I will never use. I chose the name -

Starbuck

Not after the coffee but after the Sci-Fi series. I figured it suited him and I am keeping tradition alive.

Here is a picture of Starbuck at 10.5 weeks (taken last week) He is on the left:

Image

His ears will eventually stand straight up on their own - they stay that way for life.

Here is a picture of his mother -

Image

Here is a picture of his father -

Image

They are sighthounds - very sleek and agile. They can hit 40 mph from three strides. They can jump over 6 ft. from a stand still. They stand about 27" tall at the withers (shoulders) and weigh between 50-70 lbs. with the occasional 80+ lb dog.

The person I am purchasing him from said Starbuck is on the larger side and he already weighs 30 lbs. at 11 weeks.

So, do we have any other dog lovers? I know we have cat lovers here (I have one myself). If so, what kind of dog do you have and what are their names?

Best regards,

Moon

That is a cool looking dog, I can't say that I have seen one before.

I don't have a dog, but a few years down the road I plan on getting one and I already know what I am getting. When I was younger I had two dogs, and one day people showed up at my house (I was about 5) and took them. My dad sold them because we were moving and I was really upset.

So I am getting the same kind of dog I had then, because I really like them - English Springer Spaniel. I know they are a bit hyper for some people but I like them a lot.

I have a "mutt" and love her for it! :P

My dog is an Aussie/Border Collie mix that fits almost all of your listed recommendations except for the easy to groom point. I have had her for 2-3 years, and I adopted her as a rescue at the SPCA. She was very sick at the time, but now she runs everything. I would post a pic, but I am at work!

I had two dachsie's that I got from the same litter. One of them passed away last spring at the ripe old age of 13. His brother died in the fall after fighting back problems (normal for dachshunds).

My daughter's Australian Shepherd, who was raised with the two died shortly after and the Vet actually told us it was broken heart. After Roo and Bandit, she wouldn't eat, hardly drink anything and just kind of started wasting away. The vet never found anything wrong with her and his conclusion was she missed Roo and Bandit. She was only about 8 years old.

I decided to lay off the dawg thing for a while after that, then my other daughter showed up with a puppy for me that a friend of hers had. Camille's mom was a black lab and her dad was half german shepherd and half rotweiller (sp?). So I was back in the dawg business.

Then right before Thanksgiving my Mom had a stroke and her 2 dawgs, Goldie (golden retriever) and Jazz (not sure here, looks like either part whippet or part greyhound and maybe a lab mix) took up residence at my place.

So now I'm back to 3 dawgs. I'm having to fight off my daughter's right now because they think I should have at least 1 dachshund if not 2. There are several breeders in my area and they try to get me to go "JUST LOOK" at the puppies knowing if I do I'll have at least one more dawg.

Always been a dawg person, always will be.

Right now I own a English Mastiff who is 8 months old, a English Springer Spaniel who is almost 17 years old and a Saint Bernard who is almost 4 years old. I can say without a doubt that dogs are my life and I just cant see living without one. Golden or Lab retriever would have been a good choice for you as well. I love all kinds of dogs and I'm sure your ibizan will turn out great.

My wife and I adopted our two dogs, Louie & Simon, when we started dating in college. They turn 12 this year, and are in remarkably good shape, despite recently switching to a prescription dog food. Simon still runs around when we let him back inside. Lou has been on an even keel for a long time, and despite being a little crotchety, we love him and wouldn't want him to change. They're getting older, and I can't take them on long hikes any more. I learned that lesson two years ago.

Image

Louie is the white dog and Simon is the Black one. They're from the same litter, but they look and act nothing alike.

Anubis is a jackal, not a dog-They do look similar though, except for the coloring and humanoid body!

I had a rottweiler growing up, he was called Bonzo and I loved that dog. He died from stomach cancr when i was 17 though, was terrible, he lost like 50 lbs in a very short time, and we probably kept him alive a little too long since the vet said it could be an infection.

We then got a yellow lab named Simba (after the lion king of course, since we got him around that time). He lives with my parents, but I still consider him my dog. He has a wonderful temper, and is the best dog anyone could ever hope for, but he is 12 years old now and it's starting to show. The worst part is when they die.

At my apartment the girlfriend and I have 3 cats, so I guess you can call me an animal lover. I want a dog again when I get a house with a garden.

A friend of mine has an Ibizan. Haven't met him personally, but he is well-loved.

I have two Boston Terriers, Marshall and Leroy, both around 2 years of age. They are amazing. Small dogs without any ankle-biting or wussy tendancies you get from other small dogs. Very affectionate, rough-and-rowdy playful, and love everyone, especially kids and other dogs. My boys love big dogs, so we always take them to the large-dog side of the dog park. They run all the little dogs over anyway.

I don't see myself owning another breed ever. We have been involved in the local Boston Terrier rescue for awhile now, and even fostered one for a few months. Working from home, I spend a lot of time with them and I can honestly say that my life is much happier and fulfilling with them around.

I started a blog when Marshall was a puppy (from his POV), but I don't update it much anymore. Had a bit of a following for awhile and even got some free stuff by mentioning certain online businesses! They do have their own myspace pagethough

This is a pic of them when Leroy was a puppy. They bonded immediately. It's probably my favorite pic of them together.

Yes, that particular dog is a dead ringer for a Jackal, well, an ancient Egyptian wall painted Jackal at least.

Moon should name him Anubis Jackal. AJ for short, and Anubis Jackal if you're mad at him. Dogs with two names like humans are rare. It would make him special.

examples:

"Fetch the ball AJ!"

"Anubis Jackal! You let go of that baby's leg this instant!"

Thanks for sharing, everyone!

As for Anubis...that name was considered. Researching the Ibizan it is believed they were indeed the inspiration for the dogs depicted in Ancient Egyptian art.

I actually was going to go with a double name - which I thought was funny - and my wife thought was retarded (she may be right). But it certainly had a good ring to it...

I have a six foot tall privacy fence surrounding the back yard. They will only get to be off leash when they are being supervised in the back yard.

Since the Ibizan is a sighthound (they have very keen vision and a high prey drive) and will chase small animals with no regard for their own safety or their owner's yells to COME BACK! ...they can be a danger to themselves by getting lost or running into traffic.

I actually thought about investing in this hand dandy device -

http://www.globalpetfinder.com/

But while he is a pup he will not be able to jump that high...so I have some time.

I have a german shepherd named Kaiser. He's about six years old now. I got him from my best friend's dad who breeds and trains them for police work. He's not been trained as a police dog but he has been trained as an attack dog. I originally got him as a pet/security for when I lived alone, but now he's just like any family member.

I love german shepherds. They are highly intelligent for a dog and extremely obedient and protective, but his also extremely friendly and gentle with people he knows. In six years, he's never misbehaved once.

I am getting a Malamute this spring from the kennels up in the Sierras. I waited abit after my last dog but after I move I am gonna finally get another dog.

A suggestion on a fence is to make a top section that angles in toward the yard at around a 35 degree angle, and about 2' total in length (not doing the math but it would add about 16" to the fence height but has the amazing effect if being equal to a fence much much higher. We used them to keep deer out and they never failed.

I used to have an English Setter who died a few years back. He was the hunting sort, not the show sort, so he had short hair and was often mistaken for a weird dalmation.

I plan on getting a dog once my life becomes a little less transient. I need a dog that weighs at least 40 pounds, I can only think of maybe 3 or 4 dogs less than that I've ever met and liked. I really like german shepherds and your basic labs, and I'm a big doberman fan as well. Ideally, I'd find a mutt which combines parts of some combination of those.

I also love cats.

I used to have one too. She barked whenever someone came to our door, but the second we told her it was ok, she would great them by licking their hand. Not once has someone ever been attacked by her. Its too bad she got cancer at the age of 7. She had so much left to offer. My best memory of her was when she came into my room to wake me up and scare a burglar away.

Now that I have a house of my own and married now, I'll be looking for another german shepherd.

I've only heard my dog bark 3 times at strangers, and all 3 were people he didn't know or know very well who were in our yard where they weren't supposed to be. The only other time he really barks is when he's excited like when I'm about to throw his frisbee or his favorite ball or when he's otherwise playing around.

I don't like dogs that bark a lot. When I take him out other dogs are always yapping at him and he just stands there looking at them. It's pretty impressive.

Siberian Husky is one of my favorite breeds. They are extremely intelligent, great family pets (pack instinct maybe?), are a bitch to groom (I'm a glutton for more work), and are very quiet dogs. I had one when I was a kid and he NEVER barked. They just look so majestic to me. Congrats on your new family member Moonwynd, glad you found a dog that is as different as you are.

My wife and I have 3 yellow labs. Mandy is 12 or 13 (we never can remember which), Jack is 1 1/2 years, and Bella is probably somewhere around 9 months (I still can't remember).

I swear to god that both Jack and Bella are defective...they do the damned wierdest things sometimes, but they're wonderful companions. They have truly unique personalities.

Jack doesn't really bark...he "woo woos" instead. Bella on the other hand...well, let's just say that when she wants attention, she barks like mad. We're working on that, but she's still a puppy. ^.^ They're both kennel trained but spend the majority of their day out of the kennel, unless we need some quiet(er) time.

If you leave Jack and Bella together, furniture seems to move itself around the living room. Sometimes I think Jack comes up and looks at me as if to ask, "Would you please put her in her kennel so I can have some damn peace?" 'Cause really, if you leave the two of them out, they never stop playing.

I was the most awesome dog. He lived to be 19.

I would describe him with the same words you used, Kyou.

He was never aggressive to anyone or anything except one cat who made the mistake of jumping into our yard. He grabbed the cat in his mouth, gave it a shake and tossed it back over the 6 foot fence (the cat was fine).

I don't recommend pit bulls as pets:

Check the link. The man looks pretty old to be wrestling a Pitbull. Nice job!

http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?secti ... id=4988044
(1/31/07 - KTRK/MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX) - A Conroe man wasn't about to let a neighbor's pit bull attack him. He courageously fought back and now that dog is dead.

Von Pardue bears the scars of a frightening attack. His hands and wrists are heavily bandaged, the result of the early morning attack. It all started when Pardue went for his morning walk. He encountered the dog along the street.

With the dog attacking him, what happened next is amazing. Pardue was able to drag the dog all the way down the street and to his house."

"I thought he was going to take that finger off," said Pardue. "I was going to try and grab him by his jaws, but his jaws were so big and powerful, I couldn't pull my hand out of his mouth. So the only thing I could do was hit him in the ribs as hard as possible and it popped his mouth open. Then I pulled my hand out and got him by the collar."

Pardue says even though he had the dog by the collar, it was spinning around, trying to bite him again. With no way to call for help, Pardue dragged the dog to his back door.

"I just had him like this and had him by the collar and head and you know, flipped him around here and held him and banged on the door," said Pardue.

Pardue's wife called 911. By the time authorities arrived, the dog was dead. Pardue had choked the dog. Police say the dog's owner thought the animal was in the back yard.

"The owner said they didn't realize the dog was out when they woke up this morning," said Sgt. Mike Tindall with the Conroe Police Department. "They found the dog was missing. They didn't know anything about the attack at that point

In a strange twist, police say there is the possibility the owners could face charges. However, I learned that same dog was picked up by authorities last month after it was found running loose in the neighborhood.

Speaking of dogs....

2 days before Christmas, Eric found this sweet girl wandering the Stop N Go parking lot near our house. No collar, ribs showing. We tried to take her to the SPCA but they said she would just be euthanized because she was part pit bull (pit/lab mix). We've tried tracking down her former owner but no luck.

I've never cared for pit bulls and I do believe that breeding/selling them should be outlawed, but killing them just because they are pit bulls pisses me off.

This girl is the sweetest thing. She is docile and loving, attention-starved really. She is well-behaved on a leash and has never showed a single sign of aggression toward anyone or other dogs. We're training her not to jump on people. She's got that excitable puppy thing going

We're trying to find her a home right now if anyone in the Houston area is interested. (Hell, I'd even drive a few hours if it meant finding her a loving home)

She's living in our backyard right now until we can find her a home. We bring her inside when its too cold, but she has a dog house she sleeps in. I've taken her to the vet for shots etc and she's very healthy. The vet estimates she is barely a year old. She weighs 63 lbs.

That's quite the choker collar! Metal spikes that dig into the neck!

I remember as a kid back in Germany, someone was using one of those collars and a lady flipped out, screaming about animal cruelty. Germans are big time dog lovers.

We had to muzzle our dachshund every so often while walking him in public. (this is the same one that bit 17 people in his career). No human would have received a 10th of the affection this dog did if they behaved as badly. If they had a dog prison, he would have been in there with no parole. Not all dogs are sweet, but we stuck by this one and kept him on a leash. All bite victims were either in our house or came too close to him when he was leashed in the yard, came into a hotel room to clean when we left instructions not to do so, or turned around to pet him in the back seat of a car only to get bitten in the face. Nice doggy!

Our dog trainer recommended the collar for our Boston Terriers. The spikes are there to keep the collar from slipping over their heads, a problem with Bostons who have thick necks and small heads. They are bent at angle and don't hurt them unless you pull really hard. I tried it on my arm to make sure!

I think Eric just bought her one because our other 2 dogs have them. She would be fine with a regular choke collar, but he just doesn't think sometimes...

Pit Bulls

I do not know if anyone here has heard of Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer). Long before I heard of him I had been doing almost exactly what he does - Being a calm assertive pack leader (Alpha presence), using exercise, boundaries and rules, and affection (in that order) to have the most happy, healthy, fulfilled dogs I could have. I have even used my formula (should have patented this!) with the pets of friends and family to help out their troubled dogs.

I truly believe that all dogs are dogs first - breed second. While certain breeds were bred to be fighters - Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull/American Staffordshire, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, etc. - many of these instinctual/genetic predispositions can be overcome by maintaining the dog's role in the pack - making sure that human beings are always in the calm assertive pack leader role and the dogs are in the calm submissive pack follower role - always remembering to correct unwanted behavior the moment it occurs.

My close friend and his wife have two Staffordshire Bull Terriers and a Bull Terrier - tremendously loving and beautiful animals. In fact, the Staffordhire has a reputation with children that is unparalleled - they are often called the Nanny Dog.

My neighbor has two Pit Bulls - Cisco and Zayna. Cisco is HUGE beautiful animal - he must easily weigh in at 130+ lbs. I have spent much time with them - always maintaining the presence of calm assertiveness - and those dogs love me - I can get them to lay down on their sides by just walking up to them and looking at them - it is a very loving submission just as you would see in nature in natural dog packs. And when I let them get up they are very calm and all they want is a back rub or some affection - which I gladly give them in spades.

Conversely, just as a dog's predisposition to certain behaviors can be modified/corrected, so too can those behaviors be enhanced and focused. I think this is where Pit Bulls get into trouble. Cavalier owners and owners who either do nothing to overcome breeding and genetics or who actually promote agressive behavior are irresponsible dog owners and it only hurts the dog/breed.

I believe it takes a very strong person with strong leadership abilities and a firm but loving hand to own these breeds.

Just my two cents.

Respectfully,

Moon

If not for the human arms, this picture would be a great companion to the one above!

This is Seth. He is a German short hair that was professionally trained to bird hunt/point. His hunting partner, a female short hair, was far more interesting to him then the birds so the original owner retired him after his first year hunting, although I was not in the market for a dog at the time I couldn't stand the thought of him going to the pound just because he was a little to horney so I took him in. He is the most loyal dog I have ever had, ever night when I come home from work he comes to the door to greet me by sitting at my feet growling at me until I growl back. If he is within 10 feet of me and stirred up he has to come bounding at me as fast as he can to plant his face in my chest and nuzzle.

My roomate has a Boxer thats awsome. The only problem is sometimes he is alittle to active but other than that he is great. Not always the brightest dog but very loving and friendly even to people he doesn't know. He is alittle large for a boxer like 65 pounds but I think a lot of that has to do with him not staying out of the damn swimming pool.

Here is the only pic I have of him.

My sister keeps Basset Hounds. If there is a more hilariouos breed of dog anywhere in the world, I haven't seen it. These are serious comedy animals due to their "stroppy teenager" pesonalities :)

They are a fucking awesome sight in full flight, though, as they were originally bred for hare hunting. They use ground-effect for cornering i swear :)

Last year we got a Saluki named Leo, also a sight hound and interesting history like the Ibizan Hounds.
He's a fantastic spaz, I don't know what I'd do without him. His favorite game is tormenting the cat.

You know. I was attacked by three different dogs during my childhood. But I still love dogs! I do require a certain level of behavior if I'm going to interact with one though.

Anyways, I just wanted to say that you all have some beautiful animals. :)
