Hello Vault, Merry Christmas.

So that people don't think he's given up and left the vault like I have, I thought I'd tell you that Midnyte was banned for his comment in the hiker thread. From the looks of it, it didn't cause much controversy. Could that be the last straw?

Well, how many people is it so far we have had that thought they were banned, seem to recall a few cases before.

And the comment Midnyte posted as bad as some of the idiocy he spews out, doubt he got banned over that. Hell be back in a few weeks posting again, after all, he already broke his "i wont post here anymore" promise a few times.

Looks like he is on the banlist, and as it wasn't me who did it, he was finally annoying and/or racist enough to make Py or Xou pull the trigger. Sucks to be him, but check the rules and then come back and tell me that guy hasn't been the biggest troll around for some time now. I'm pretty sure he's even acknowledged it.

I'll let whoever did it decide if they want to explain themselves or consider removing the ban, but I don't see any reason for me to do it.

Sad to see a banning on a board like this. You should be able to be an absolute sadist, racist, or the antichrist and still be able to post on this board as long as you're not spamming intentionally or selling something. If one liner responses were considered spam, there'd be plenty of people banned on this board.

Unless I missed a PK-IRL threat somewhere I don't see what was so annoying. Who cares if someone is a racist. This is America. There's plenty of racist people in this country.

This board can narrow itself down to le Cliqu(e) fairly fast. If you start eliminating sections of the VV population...you end up preaching to the choir and what fun is that if you eventually eliminate the opinions you feel are too radical until everyone left thinks the same way you do...how b o r i n g would that be?

If I wanted to discuss atheism, I wouldn't go to an Atheist board...what good would that do? Dive right into the middle of some evangelist forum and start working them over. Midnyte represents a real segment of our population. To deny access to it is to create an artificial environment (cliqu(e) sort of like a self help center for those that just want to reaffirm their opinions without dealing with real world situations.

It's not that hard to ignore posts. Don't forget the roots of this board. Freedom of speech, no matter what your opinion. If you 'hate' someone on the board, flame their ass.

I like this board because I can get into a major flame war with a member of this board in one forum and have a normal discussion with the same person in another forum. Thick skins and the ability to compartmentalize flames and topics is what makes for a good VVer.

Even a week banning is over the top but at least would be understandable if it was explained. Stealth bannings of veteran VVers...
not so good.

Py, Sylvus and Xou do a nice job on this board but I don't see racism as a reason to ban someone the same as I don't see any other non conformist opinions being a reason to ban people. Twenty years ago, half of this board would probably have been banned for being Atheists or some other equally lame reason. We could ban half the planet right now for women's rights issues which are just as bad as racism.

Judgment calls on shit like that is a bad idea, especially on this board.

I realize you're going to argue regardless of any position that anyone takes on anything, Winnow, but it's not flaming or a dissenting opinion or anything along those lines. It's trolling, plain and simple. To fit your metaphor, if you wanted to discuss atheism, you probably shouldn't just go to a Christian board and go "GOD IS A FAGGOT", wait for 10 or 15 replies, and go "HOOK LINE AND SINKER YOU FUCKING MACKEREL SNAPPERS". That's not a discussion, nor a non-conformist opinion, it's trolling.

It's a rule we've always had, and also one that has been enforced how many times over the last 4 years? I think it happening once every couple years isn't something that you need to worry about the admins culling the population en masse. And while I'm in 100% agreement that a board full of people who do nothing but agree would be no fun, you also have to remember that racism is one of those societal no-nos that can really hurt or alienate people. I don't know the details of this particular incident, but I have gotten many complaints by and about many different people over the years, and when it comes down to losing 5 people who actually make a contribution to discussion vs. 1 person who is entirely worthless, it's a no-brainer.

Most of the things you've said are entirely true. People have every right to free speech, they have the right to offend people, people should and do compartmentalize flames here, etc. What they don't have the right to do is do any of those things strictly for the sake of trolling and never make a contribution. I have yet to see anyone even attempt to try and say that Midnyte was anything other than a gigantic troll. While the rules are rarely enforced, that doesn't mean they don't exist.

You can't please everyone all of the time, but I guarantee no Midnyte around here pleases more people than it doesn't. I also wouldn't be surprised if this weren't a snap judgement on someone's part that resulted in it being only temporary, but I have no idea.

It wasn't a mistake - I just never had any plans of making in a permanent thing. I just got sick of seeing the hateful bile that spills out of your mouth on occasion and decided to do something about it.

Think of it as a Christmas present for everyone involved. (For you, getting to come and assume that somebody realized they made a mistake and for everyone else, not having to read your posts for a few days!)
