McCain's Son Joining Marines

Post by Winnow »

McCain already has a lot of support from voters from both parties. I wonder how McCain having a son in the marines will eventually affect voter's opinions as it's bound to get lots of play come election time. I would think positively for both sides as McCain already has the history to understand the horrors of war and having a son that would eventually head to the Middle East, might help, or at least give the impression, that McCain would weigh his decisions heavily regarding military actions.

I overheard on the news this morning that only 8 member of the senate/congress have children in the military. I'd have to look into that to see if I heard that correctly.

Youngest son of Senator McCain to join Marines

Washington: The youngest son of US Senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam and a vocal proponent of more American troops in Iraq, will soon report for duty in the Marine Corps, Time Magazine reported.

Jimmy McCain, 18, will spend three months in boot camp in California this autumn and another month in specialised training.

Depending on his unit, the younger McCain could eventually wind up in Iraq where Marines have experienced heavy fighting, Time reported. Marines are also in combat in Afghanistan.

"I'm obviously very proud of my son," McCain told Time, "but also understandably a little nervous."

The US military death toll in Iraq stands at 2,574, including four Marines killed on Thursday, the military said on Saturday.

Not!

It's too early to be making predicitions like that but I'd give a better than average chance of a terrorist attack drumming up votes for the republican candidate closer to Nov 2008.

This kid is probably sincere, but he's going to have dozens of guardian angels looking out for him during his tour.

Agree, the brass will keep him snugged up at a desk and on the bench.

Whether he wants to or not this kid will never see any combat.

Depends if he qualifies for flight school or special forces. If he's able to fly, bet your ass on him seeing action (such action that exists from 70000 feet in an F117a), but otherwise, I expect him to get a nice cushy aide position in DC or Germany.

Even if I didn't like McCain, as a parent I would never wish anyone's son to get "Pat Tillmon'ed" While I usually agree with you Kyou I think that statement was over the line... at least IMHO. Don't you have kids?

I wouldn't send my kids off to illegally invade sovereign nations in order to increase the already inordinate wealth of people I don't even know.

sending your son to die in order to get elected is pretty goddam awful. although last election we saw how fucking low McCain will sink to make other republcians like him.

Perhaps I missed something but I doubt, knowing what he went through, McCain would encourage his son to join, but that's just my opinion.

I'm also not sure how low he stepped, again, maybe I'm missing something. I have been disappointed at this fundie acceptance as of late but other than that he seems like a pretty good guy.

You are right about one thing though, I wouldn't send my kids either. In fact I would do everything that I could to keep them from signing up at a time like this.

I'm confused about the "sending him off" part. He's an adult and he can make his own decisions.

Montana senator's nephew dies in Iraq

Tuesday, August 1, 2006; Posted: 9:16 p.m. EDT (01:16 GMT)

HELENA, Montana (AP) -- A nephew of Sen. Max Baucus serving in the Marines was killed in Iraq during the weekend, the senator's office said Tuesday.

Cpl. Phillip E. Baucus, 28, died Saturday during combat operations in Anbar province, the Department of Defense said. It did not immediately release further information.

In a statement, Baucus, D-Montana, said the family was "devastated by the loss."

"Phillip was an incredible person, a dedicated Marine, a loving son and husband, and a proud Montanan and American," the senator said. "He heroically served the country he loved and he gave it his all."

Phillip Baucus, of Wolf Creek, was part of a Marine Corps battalion based at Twentynine Palms, Calif. He was married last August at the ranch his parents operate between Helena and Great Falls.

Max Baucus voted to authorize war in Iraq in 2002. Earlier this summer, he joined other Democrats in voting to begin a phased redeployment of troops from the war-torn country by year's end.

Baucus is in his fifth term in the Senate.

I thought they still had a few warthogs (A-10) running around. I know they were going to scrap'em in the 80s but then they did so well in the first Iraq war that they did a refit of some of them. Maybe it's the USAF who flys them but since it's a tank buster it makes sense to me that it could be a marien aircraft.

Hmm, I thought the A10's were primarilly an Army jet now. I haven't really kept up on them too much lately though.

A10s were Air Force (unless things have changed in the last 4-5 years, haven't really read much about military aviation during that time span). I don't think the Army is allowed to operate any fixed wing aircraft (unless that has been changed).

After a little looking around, I see that the A10 is indeed an Air Force jet!

Yeah, I realized why I had thought of it as an Army jet, and that was from talking to a few friends in the Army that had talked about A10's supporting them.

Yeah CAS (close air support) of ground troops is there primary job. Aside from a few utility functions they can serve they are always swarming and covering soldier and marines heads.

ROFL... I even had to laugh at that one! Just an FYI though... AC130 doesn't use jet engines.

But Chuck Norris became intimidated by his ability to hold two M16 rifles with underslung grenade launchers akimbo, with a blonde swimsuit model over one shoulder and a crippled kid riding on his back while reciting all 50 states to the tune of "Stars and Stripes Forever" and not making it sound stupid.

That Coast Guard marking on the side of the boat, does Canada use that one or is that American? If it is, that's a pretty poor photoshop job, just putting the Canadian flag up there.

For shame.
