Even if the movies suck, there is much fun to be had by watching them at a DrafthouseA MEXICAN FEAST YOU CAN EAT IN A LUCHA LIBRE MASK!
Nacho Libre with Mexican Feast!
Tues, June 20 at Lamar and Weds, June 21 at the Village!
NACHO LIBRE opens this Friday at the Alamo South Lamar and the Alamo Village (with latenight sneaks at both theaters on Thursday night before that official open), but the fun of the opening week doesn't end there. We've been excited about this movie for a long time, and even Alamo owner Tim League getting whacked in the chest with a 2x4 couldn't dull our senses. And because just seeing and hearing a movie is never enough for our Alamo senses and sensibilities, we've set up two fantastic Mexican feast showings of Nacho Libre where your ticket will include a four course meal with several Mexican beers so you can have strength for the good fight.
Check out the menu for the feast, and make sure you get to the theater early to see special video of wrestling in nacho cheese, Jack Black highlights, and real Lucha Libre wrestling in our preshow for the movie.
Here's the feast menu:
Amuse Bouche
Sopa de Aquacate
Avocado Soup
Appetizers
Mollettes
Crisp bolillo shells filled with refried black beans, and chorizo topped with chihuahua, manchego and cotija cheeses then guajillo salsa
Salad
Ensalada de Nopalitos
Salad of Cactus, tomatoes and red onion on red oak lettuce with lime-mexican mint marigold dressing
Entree
Snapper en Salsa Verde con chayote rellenos de elote
Gulf Snapper baked in a tomatillo green chile sauce with chayote squash stuffed with corn.
Dessert
Cocada Imperial con Mangoes Flameado
Coconut Flan with Mangoes flambeed in tequilla and triple sec
Several Mexican beers are included in the ticket price.

hehe, no I don't work there. I refused to go to see any movie on the big screen again until I saw a new location pop up near where I live. The "chain" used to only show certain types of movies, and when they expanded into older theaters which had closed down...it was on! They started showing new releases as well. Most of the other gripes people have posted about actually going to the movies are not present for me anymore which makes me happy.
This movie will not be for everyone. Unfortunately for me I am one of those people. I kept looking at the time wondering when it would be over. Sure, it gave a few laughs but not worth sitting through for an hour and a half. Consuming several beers beforehand can only help this movie.
I liked the director's last effort (Napolean Dynamite) a lot more than this even though that too was not a movie for everyone.
I'm going to have to agree with Ebert on this one:

4/10Jack Black is not very funny in "Nacho Libre," and that requires some meditation. Jack Black is essentially, intrinsically and instinctively a funny actor. He has that Christopher Walken thing going where you smile when he appears in a movie. It takes some doing to make a Jack Black comedy that doesn't work. But "Nacho Libre" does it.

I think I might give it a 6/10. It was entertaining to a point, but I too caught myself wondering what time it was. Normally there might be a point in the movie where you can feel that it went off track, but I don't remember feeling that with this one. There were some laughs tucked in throughout the movie, but none of them really fell in line with the story. I think the most entertaining part (other than the theater I saw it at) was trying to dodge my girlfriend's slaps as she was laughing at parts. I will never go to a comedy with her when she starts her period again!

In the end - if you enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite, you will enjoy this movie. It's basically the same story except with some cool wrestling moves.
You shouldn't come into the theatre expecting an amazing movie - the Hess Brothers (I believe that's their name) don't write them. What you should expect is some awkward hilarious situations that you really won't find anywhere else.
I don't like Jack Black as a main character in most movies (he does better on the side like in Saving Silverman), but he was great in Nacho Libre. You can really tell he enjoyed making this movie.

I'm not exactly sure which typo you'd be referring to. Perhaps you'd care to be more specific.Mr Bacon wrote:Heh, guess you made a typo. Go fix it.Aslanna wrote:Not really. No, you are the one who is wrong!Aslanna wrote:Nope. Wrong! It's quite possible.Mr Bacon wrote:You made a typo in that you stated that you enjoyed Napoleon Dynamite yet disliked Nacho Libre. You meant to type that you enjoyed both films. Obviously it is impossible to enjoy only one of the two.

Again, Jack Black is great in it - it's totally his style. You'll like it.Animalor wrote:My soul is still shriveled from the viewing of Napoleon Dynamite.
I have enough faith in the work of Jack Black that, when I see this movie, the second work of this director will not kill me completely.

Napoleon Dynamite was stupid. Not even a good and funny stupid, just stupid. I laughed twice in the whole movie. The fact that this movie is a cult classic says a lot about how shitty movies are any more these days.Winnow wrote:I would think that members of the Cliqué wouldn't like Napoleon Dynamite because they are too cool to understand the humor! Do you even know what the fuck a cult classic is? By definition it doesnt appeal to a wide audience so it makes sense that there's (many) people such as you who don't like it. I'd add more comments in response but I'm still trying to decipher what exactly "The fact that this movie is a cult classic says a lot about how shitty movies are any more these days" is supposed to communicate. I do not understand the words that are coming out of your mouth.Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:Napoleon Dynamite was stupid. Not even a good and funny stupid, just stupid. There's nothing wrong with Heathers : ) I enjoyed it as well...just more Cliqué-ish!Sirensa wrote:wtf is wrong with Heathers?! That movie is funny! =(Winnow wrote:I would think that members of the Cliqué wouldn't like Napoleon Dynamite because they are too cool to understand the humor! Heathers is more their style!
Anyone saying Napoleon Dynamite was stupid is entitled to their opinion but also not bright enough to grasp the underlying humor as well. NP was odd, strange, and different...but not stupid.
For Midnyte, Star Wars was a cult classic!
Well, we cant expect everyone to understand humor thats more advanced than The Three Stooges levelMidnyte_Ragebringer wrote:Napoleon Dynamite was stupid. I personally laughed my ass off at NP, had a lot of great awkward moments, and half the fun was in what was NOT being said

Napoli Dynamo is about as humerous as Chris Rock, Ali G and Chappelle.. which is not at all.
But hey, to each their own. Some idiots on the planet find the "Jackass" show funny and millions of people tune in for Real World 89 or the newest episodes of NeXt, America's Next Top Model and Survivor 34: The Bronx.
