Concert Review: Mudvayne

I had a chance to see Mudvayne perform at Harpos in Detroit last friday, 11/22/02. We have had many music oriented threads here and I know there are at least a few dedicated metal heads here

On with the review.

Tickets: $15.00 ea. Sold out show of 3,000+ (packed in shoulder to shoulder)

Venue: Harpos in Detroit, MI (Standing room only)

Start time: 7pm

Bands:

First band was local, I missed it

Second band was Taproot. I had never heard their music so I was pretty unimpressed. However, the 5 guys directly in front of me seemed to love them enough for everyone in venue. They sang every song and knew right when to jump and shout. They were more entertaining than Taproot.

Third band: Main event time. Mudvayne played for a mere hour or so due to Taproot taking too long to set up. They played lots of LD 50 as well as 3 or 4 songs off thier latest CD "The End of All Things to Come..." which hit the shelves on 11/19/02. I was happy to see them in thier make-up. They looked pretty cool IMO. They talked OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS more than I thought they would inbetween songs. I was rather shocked that they sounded intelligent except for saying fuck every other word. Hey, I have no problem with swearing, but when your opening remarks are "We're fucking really fucking happy to fucking be here", I was hoping they would STFU and play. Quite the opposite really. They had excellent "lead in" commentary to various songs. Amoung my favorites were Death Blooms, Nothing to Gein, Silence, Not Falling, and Dig. Each time they spoke, they gave interesting insights to the meaning of each song.

Downsides: Too many people. Didn't play that long. In many Mudvayne songs, the lyrics come extremely fast and furious. During a live performance, sometimes the lead singer couldn't even keep up. It's also hard to head bang to Mudvayne. Their music is rather complex with lots of switching and double-back beats.

Upsides: Insane moshing. Excellent playlist. High energy, full throttle crowd. The band was having a great night and it showed in the performace.

After taking everything into account, I would give this a 8.5 out of 10. I cannot stress how great their playlist was. They chose alll of my favortie songs and they get high marks for that. Bottom line: I left the venue completely and utterly rocked, with adreneline still flowing on the drive home.

I'll also post my Tool review from last month and Lords of Acid from 11/13/02 if people give a rats ass. Oh yeah, Korn in Saginaw, MI is next Saturday.

I have heard their music but i had no idea they were into the dressing up shit..

Although i do like some of their music, just seeing how they dress up for a show makes me want to puke. Just like slipknot or marilyn manson.

I guess those kind of bands are sad that freak shows are more rare nowadays and they want to incorporate that sort of thing to their live music.

In the end i don't really care about how they dress as long as the music is good. But then again i ask myself what pushes them to look like total tards.?!

the shock value stuff has been done. and redone. and beaten to death. and buried. and exhumed. and done again.

pretty much if you can't just show up and play without a bunch of nonsense, chances are you suck.

and if the singer can't keep up with the drummer, then one - or both - of them sucks. the point of musical ensembles is to play *together*.

I read a story once that when they were starting out, they couldn't afford any lights, fancy fog machines, or stuff like that. They opted for the cheapest route to add spice to their performance, which was make-up.

Bands that wear make-up/costumes: Marylin Manson, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Insane Clown Posse, System of a Down, Mudvayne, Slipknot, Murder Dolls, Rob Zombie, David Bowie, Green Jelly, GWAR, Ozzy, ect. Hell, my parents saw the Beatles when they wore the outfits from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It sets a theme or mood to a show IMO.

Many of the above state that putting on the make-up or costume puts them into a state of mind. It's like throwing a mental switch.

Anyway, as was said, Mudvayne can make a rockin' song. "Dig" will always make me turn my stereo up way too loud. That's what it's all about at the end of the day.

Well as your on the topic of concert reviews. On Friday Nov. 22 I saw Sevendust at the Tradewinds in Sea Bright, NJ.

This was the 7th time I saw them.

We missed the opening acts due to lanes being close on the garden state parkway. But we got there just in time for Sevendust. I was right up front moshing.

They played a shorter set due to electrical problems in the club and didn't get on stage till midnight. But played a great show as Black was the opening song and got the crowd going. Towards the end of the show they jamed for like 10mins on songs like (Metallica) Master of Pupetts (Alice in Chains)We die Young (Pantera)Walk (White Zombie)Thunder Kiss '65.

The are one of the greatest live bands out there today. If you get a chance to see them go for it. You won't be let down.

I don't care for mudvayne either, but I did go to the Tool concert, and it was the best concert I have ever been to. I am excited for a perfect circle to start their tour, I missed them last time.

Unfortunetely, I missed Mudvayne at the "Pledge of Allegence Tour" because they dropped off the tour before coming to our town. However I've seen Sevendust a couple of times, they are a sweet live band!

System of a Down is also one of my favorite live bands to see. Though the different times I've seen them, they were not wearing any makeup at all...

I'm pissed as hell I had to miss the Tool concert. I coulda had damn good tickets, but noooo, had to be the same day as the first day of college classes! Ah well, there will be another time.

Harpo's, the place you love to hate. Place is a friggin pit, lol.

Saw Mudvayne a few years back there, when they were on tour with Slipknot. Great show, crowd was insane, lots of aerial debris. Got knocked silly for a couple minutes when I caught a trashcan in the back of the head.

There hasn't been any good shows at Wendler Arena in a long time. I'm definately looking forward to seeing Korn there ^ ^

I saw Mudvayne at Ozzfest a couple years back, they where alright, did'nt live up to all the hype that was around even then. /shrug

First time I saw Tool was at Lalapalooza way way back, they stole the show.

I hate "moshing", in fact I hate anything that can potentially ruin a gig for someone else. I know that these bands are there as a sort of catharsis to allow people to get out their rage (!) But jumping about like a dickhead and injuring other people for me, isn't what music is about. If you wanna do it ... you should go to a secluded part of the arena and beat the shit out of yourself.

Imagine yourself at a Tool concert, enjoying pure auditory bliss and some dick throws a trashcan at you. Fuck that, I go to gigs to hear the music, it's unfortunate that for some people to enjoy themselves, they gotta swing their dick about.

Go get a song called "Burning Spear" by "S.O.U.L." and chill out.

Shrug, if you hate moshing then you stay out of the pit. Easy. The flying debris (as far as dangerous objects like chairs and trashcans), is something mostly unique to Harpo's. Any person from Michigan that goes to metal concerts can tell you about the lawless nature of that venue.

The shows that I go to see, I generally expect, at the very least to get bruised up. Sometimes I get hurt. It's to be expected. Personally I'm not the one out there causing injuries. But, if I get one....I was usually at a show that I enjoyed

Edit-Clarifying that by unique, I mean as far as venues in MI go

Round these 'ere parts the mosh pit normally consists of the first 20 feet+ of people from the stage.

I just don't think getting a pile of cuts and bruises is part of the deal in the slightest when you go to see a band live. There's no right or wrong about this, some people need to headbutt other people in order to be happy ... others need to chill out and allow themselves to take in the music.

i saw tool at the end of october, holy fucking amazing show. seeing them live is more than a concert, it's like.. a weird sort of life altering experience (even without drugs, i swear!). they're my hands-down favorite band. i can't wait to see them again.. 3 times isn't enough ;o

Rammstein live is usually an interesting show. They have fun with diff things. In australia the singer had OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of fun with fire.

oh and most pits usually arnt at the front, they are about 20-30 feet from the stage, theres people that just want to watch and they end up in the front.
