A 27-year-old Australian beauty therapist was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found guilty of smuggling nine pounds of marijuana into Bali, Indonesia.
That seems reasonable. That heinous criminal will be off the streets for 20 years and the children of Indonesia will be safe. Think of all the lives she would have destroyed!
Let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable, let's prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all. - Douglas Adams
Reminds me of the movie Brokedown Palace. The sentence for drug smuggling was pretty stiff there too, 30 years or something? I thought it was just exagerated for the movie, but I guess not much
In some countries I believe the sentence is even death. So.. It makes sense to brush up on local drug laws before you attempt to smuggle them into the country up your bum.
PS. I can't believe pot is still illegal. It's on the same level as booze. It's crazy to have such severe penalties for a natural growing plant. (not to start up a pot legalization discussion) Let people smoke it with the same DUI restrictions as alcohol, just stay away from me when you do!
I love how Midnyte fails to see the inherant hypocracy in our drug laws.

Where do you get that from my comments about this specific case?
Ask me my opinion before you try and attach one to me.
I believe pot should be as legal as alcohol. Fact is, it isn't. I personally find no enjoyment in it, but I know many people who do. I believe they should be able to go to the store and buy pot, but right now it is against the law. Once rich people can figure a way to make money from pot and do it without ruining their reputation, they will do it.
The first mistake this dipshit woman made was SMUGGLING ILLEGAL GOODS into another country. Regardless of how you feel about the legality issue of marijuana, she was a jackass for smuggling it over a national border. She should have just smoked it at home....what normal average person would smuggle any contraband into another country for pure pleasure. The risk far outweighs the reward in my humble opinion.

The article says that perhaps it was planted on her...She says she thinks she was an unwitting mule.

Well, there was the possibility of her facing death by a firing squad.
I just heard about this case today so I haven't had a chance to read too much about it on whether she is innocent or guilty but I did find this:
Dismissed key evidence
The panel of three judges dismissed key evidence prepared by her defense team, including that of Australia prisoner John Ford who backed Corby's claim that she was an unwitting "drug mule."
The judges found Corby's defense team could not prove if there was another person responsible for the drugs.
"The defendant has been proven legally and convincingly guilty" a translator quoted the judges as saying on Sky News.
"We've found that drugs were imported into Indonesia. Importation is illegal in Indonesia and it occurred at Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar. This occurred without a licence or any permit to do so. It may not be done by anyone."
"She has been unrepentant to this. It is found the defendant is responsible for the narcotics and this should be considered when handing down the judgment."
Security was stepped up around the Bali courthouse Friday morning with more than 100 officers guarding the building amid concerns of a terror threat.
Already the case has triggered a series of threats against Indonesian diplomatic missions in Australia and Indonesia.
A team of Australian officials will head to Indonesia within the next ten days to discuss a prisoner transfer agreement between the two countries that would see Corby serve her sentence in Australia.
Corby has always maintained her innocence.
During her trial Corby maintained that she was the victim of a drug trafficking operation involving baggage handlers at Australian airports.
/sigh
what a fucked up planet we live on... why the hell cant we just be tolerant of eachother's ways? if someone wants to smoke pot or do crack or pound 17 shots of 151 or have gay sex or wear clothing in a certain manner who are we to judge and punish them? the asshole judge who sentenced her no doubt went home that night and got drunk off his ass in a manner which is MUCH less healthy physically and mentally then a couple bowls would be

Because she's a "pretty white girl" this has been all over the news here for months. There are massive holes in the case that you would never expect to get past a jury trial; the Balinese for example refused to check the weight of her luggage on arrival in Bali against the weight of her luggage when it was checked in.
There have recently been baggage handlers at the Sydney airport arrested for large scale drug smuggling. How the fuck can you be held responsible for the contents of your luggage when you're not allowed to lock your bags anymore because everyone's wetting themselves about terrorists?
However, it's a 3 judge panel kangaroo court. The lead judge has tried over 500 cases, and never found anyone innocent.

with what you said about the australian baggage and the judge trying over 500 cases and never finding anyone innocent, i sure as hell hope the australian government gets involved, 20 years in any asian prison is a fate worse then death, my bros friend spent 4 months in japanese prison for having a single joint in japan

They started working out a prisoner exchange deal w/ Indonesia a few months back when the case started to get media attention.
Fucked if I'm ever going to Bali though, there's *plenty* of rock solid cases to be made for drug traffickers, like "The Bali 9" that had drugs strapped all over their bodies. This case though.. not a chance in hell it would get past the burden of reasonable doubt.

No clue whether she is guilty or not but this has always been something I've been worried about since I fly as much as I do. You really have no defense if they find it in your suitcase and everything points towards you. It is especially worrying now that the stupid laws demand you to not lock your suitcases here in the US.
Furthermore, each country has their own laws. Y'all are complaining about the punishment here yet what would you say if somebody from a more lenient country kills somebody in the US and gets death then complaints? Ever tried bringing a prescription medication over the border that might be illegal in the US without being aware of it being illegal? You'll get smacked down just as hard and would be told "ignorance is not an excuse".

I have no problem w/ their sentencing, I have a problem w/ their joke of a judicial/policing system.

That I can understand and agree with. Shady at best. But most systems can have issues like this including the American (quite a few issues after 9/11).
I do wonder a bit though how they rationalise sentencing a terrorist who was involved in killing 202 people to 30 months jail, and a pot smuggler (INTO Bali.. what a joke) to 20 years.

What a fucking joke. This shit happens every day and it's a complete disgrace.
Midnyte by your "logic" the only reason people shouldn't be made an example to the rest of us is if some rich people can make money off whatever currently illegal activity (rightly or wrongly) they are partaking in. The thing is, you seem to see that as reasonable.
