G'day Mate

Post by Dregor Thule »

EXETER, England (Reuters) - Anthropologists stepped into a hornets' nest on Monday, revealing research that suggests the original inhabitants of America may in fact have come from what is now known as Australia.

The claim will be extremely unwelcome to today's native Americans who came overland from Siberia and say they were there first.

But Silvia Gonzalez from John Moores University in Liverpool said skeletal evidence pointed strongly to this unpalatable truth and hinted that recovered DNA would corroborate it.

"This is very contentious," Gonzalez, a Mexican, said with a smile at the annual meeting of the British association for the Advancement of Science. "They (native Americans) cannot claim to have been the first people there."

She said there was very strong evidence that the first migration came from Australia via Japan and Polynesia and down the Pacific Coast of America.

Skulls of a people with distinctively long and narrow heads discovered in Mexico and California predated by several thousand years the more rounded features of the skulls of native Americans.

One particularly well preserved skull of a long-face woman had been carbon dated to 12,700 years ago, whereas the oldest accurately dated native American skull was only about 9,000 years old.

"We have extracted her DNA. It is going to be a bomb," she said, declining to give details but adding that the tests carried out so far were being replicated to make sure they were accurate.

She said there were tales from Spanish missionaries of an isolated coastal community of long-face people in Baja California of a completely different race and rituals from other communities in America at the time.

These last survivors were wiped out by diseases imported by the Spanish conquerors, Gonzalez said.

The research is one of 11 different projects in America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East being funded over a four-year period by Britain's Natural Environment Research Council.

The projects, focusing on diet, dating and dispersal of people down the millennia in the face of climate change, aim to rewrite anthropology.

"We want to make headlines from heads," said Professor Clive Gamble of Southampton university. "DNA will give us a completely new map of the world and how we peopled it."
Interesting stuff. Personally, to me, it doesn't have any value other than academics, but I can see the First (second?) Nations getting a little bent out of shape about it.

I know! How about we hear the opinion from our resident diluted-angst filled, 23 times removed, Native American representative.

Australia is much bigger...*ducks*

Ethnologically?...Not to much really...the Maori and the Aussie Aboriginal folks are both polynesian sub-groups...Errrm i think i need to read this article rq so i can see why you are asking...:)...sec...

Errm ok not sure why you are bringing up the Maori...:)...they are a polynesian culture and off shoot from the Aussie Abo progenitors who were polynesian (notice the resemblance also between dingos and the typical polynesian dog)...the Maori however are an ethnological dead end pretty much...except for a couple islands (bah i forget the names the one where Bounty landed is one)...

New Zealanders have a funny accent.. (more like a white South African accent..)

Maoris look very different to Aboriginals which probably comes down to Australia being a much less hospitable environment, but regardless there's a marked divergance there.

Mel Gibson == USA (didn't come to Australia until he was about 7)

NZ and Australia are the same place in exactly the same way that Canada and the USA are the same place

Too often it seems it is the peaceful and innocent who are slaughtered. In this a lesson may be found that it may not be prudential to be either too peaceful or too innocent. One does not survive with wolves by becoming a sheep.

Well which one in that analogy is the USA so Karae can avoid it!

After visiting both, New Zealand seemed like England to me and Australia like Canada only with Kangaroos instead of Huskies.

The New Zealand countryside looked like Scottland to me and the hills were loaded with sheep. I spent most of my time in Cairns, Australia scuba diving around the Great Barrier Reef so my view of Australia is somewhat biased toward the beautiful side.

While in New Zealand, I spent a day walking around the Wairakei geothermal area. The only thing similar to it is Yellowstone in the US with mudpots and hot springs etc. Great site for a Xena episode to be filmed!

Both Australia and New Zealand were equally exploiting the natives doing dance rituals and dressing up in costumes etc. so I call it a draw in that respect.

Lets see both are primarily atheist so neither is the US...though Howard = Bush Fanboi...so NZ is the more logical choice...

It would be pretty accurate to say US is the most religious "developed" country around (italy a close 2nd? although i dont think more then 50% are religious there, only been exposed mainly to non-religious italians) even most european countrys which have a heavy christian/catholic backround and a national religion have between 2-20% of the population which actually pratices an established faith...US has over 50%?

Wrong
Most religious developed country (what an assinine phrase) is Vatican City.
Next, AFrica and China as well as India are far more religiously saturated since most of their cultures center around it. China's is more silent but the vast majoirty do practice worship since it is not mandated by their government not to.(read as the government allots them a certain amount of time per week for religious pursuits). Europe is a 50/50 mix between Catholics and Protestants, with the eastern part of Europe beginning to get into Eastern Orthodox. The religious "saturation" of Europe is pre-dominantly christian, howver unlike here in the US ,they know how to differentiate politics from religion.

Wait, there are still enough native americans around to be upset about this? I thought we pushed them all into the sea?

Umm primarily athiest? Where do you get that?

Australia is primarily Christian..
In response to the 2001 Census question, Australians' stated religious affiliations were: 27% Catholic, 21% Anglican, 21% other Christian denominations and 5% non-Christian religions. Just over one-quarter of all Australians either stated that they had no religion, or did not adequately respond to the question.
http://www.abs.gov.au/Ausstats/abs@.nsf ... enDocument

however, we have a very low rate of right-wing religious nutbags, so I can see how an American might be confused...
In the 2001 Census, people in the 18-24 years age group were the most likely to state that they had no religion (20%).
I think that figure was skewed up quite a bit by "kids" claiming they were Jedi :>

Oh, and Howard is a twat that believes everything the american government tells him, lies when he can't just avoid or dismiss the question, and had the temerity to call 40% of the popular vote last election as "a mandate from the people". I'd say he's Bush's twin more than his fanboi.

The closest thing to religion I have to deal with on a semi daily basis is Adex on these boards.

On a day to day basis, most Americans don't have to deal with religion unless maybe if you're in the Bible Belt. doh!

I disagree with that statement. Plenty of laws that people deal with every day are only on the books because of religion. Or some religious group is protesting this or I have to hear some bullshit news item about how the latest Harry Potter book encourages devil worship or something like that.

I wish people would pray behind closed doors like they were supposed to and accept and hang out with prostitutes, low-lifes and lawyers like my main man JC did. WWJD, indeed.

I suppose that's true. I have a good religion filtering system. I guess I was more getting at not having to see religion at work or while I'm at lunch. It may have more to do with where I live though.

Being a Hairstylist (and living in Alabama) I have found people don't talk religion unless it is brought up in conversation. I never have people walking in preaching.

Oh and btw I actually have at least two pastors of different beliefs that I cut. The one I have discussed religion with is a woman, very smart lady who has studied a lot on the subject and has asked me at least once if I was sure I was a babtist.
