I love Jr. Seau But OMG!!
DAVIE, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins linebacker Junior Seau apologized Thursday for using a derogatory term for gays while describing his relationship with his teammates.
Seau was accepting the Dolphins' leadership award at the team's annual banquet Wednesday night when he made the remark.
"A joke that came out last night, due to my stupidity, is something we have to deal with today," Seau said Thursday at the team's practice facility. "With that, I am very sad and I apologize."
During his speech at the banquet, Seau said: "We are a unit that cares. ... I would say love and everybody would say, 'You're a faggot,' but I'm not."
It's the second time since joining the Dolphins that Seau's choice of words has sparked controversy.
Last October, Seau -- who is of Samoan descent -- apologized for suggesting the way to stop former teammate LaDainian Tomlinson is to feed him fried chicken and watermelon. Seau said he meant no harm, and Tomlinson, who is black, laughed it off.

When you're in a position like his, you very much need to consider what you say. You're a role model to poor misguided people, you represent not only yourself but your team, the franchise, and allll the money that goes behind it. If some comedian shmuck alienates blacks in some comedy club, it's not so big a deal, it's his own personal consequences. If an athlete does it, then you have a problem on your hands.
Another example, Lalanae was telling me about some remarks Ryan Seacrest on American Idol has made. Last season to Ruben Studdard about eating watermelon, and this year to I don't know who her name is when they did the hometown visit clip and he asked her if she had some chittlins. You wanna bet he took heat for that after the show, and he deserved it.

From what I remember the comment about Tomlinson was not racially meant but specifically to the fact that he liked chicken and watermelon.
I know the easiest way to stop me is to offer me BBQ ribs and watermelon, and I am not of african descent. Of course I do not eat ribs anymore since they are a fatass staple, not a lean staple, but man I remember them.

If I were in his shoes, I wouldnt appologize. I dont care how many people look up to me as a role model. Heres a good role model, someone that doesnt trifle over stupid shit like this. Someone who isnt affraid to say what they want to say. Someone who isnt affraid to say things in front of his friends. I hear faggots say faggot all the fucking time. This is going to turn into the new multirace nigger buzzword.

John Rocker is a racist fuckwad. Junior is just a jock who prolly had a few beers/Oxys too many and let his tongue get too loose.
Most of the fags I know aren't all that sensitive about shit like this, so I wonder who is actually all uppity about this. Also, if Tomlinson didn't think the watermelon and chicken joke was an issue, who the fuck are we to make it one?

There are the lyrics from 50 cents big song last year. Millions and millions of children listened to that song either by CD, MTV, or the 20 times a day played on their local radio station. Why is it okay for him, but not okay for Junior to make a joke. The word police anger me deeply. I just want to see some consistency. And you should love it, way more then you hate it
Nigga you mad? I thought that you'd be happy I made it
I'm that cat by the bar toasting to the good life
You that faggot ass nigga trying to pull me back right?
When my junk get to pumpin in the club it's on
I wink my eye at ya bitch, if she smiles she gone
If the roof on fire, let the motherfucker burn
If you talking bout money homie, I ain't concerned
I'm a tell you what Banks told me cause go 'head switch the style up
If the niggas hate then let 'em hate

There is a huge difference between people deciding something offends them and saying that that person doesn't have the right to say a thing...I don't see anyone suggesting Seau didn't have the right to say what he said...Though it is in fairly bad taste...

The thing about 50 cent is that no one with a room temp or better IQ takes the time to give a fuck about what he is saying.
Of course no one should value what a football player says either.

It was good of him to acknowledge that it was the wrong thing to say. We all let stuff like that slip sometimes when we're trying to be funny.
Anyone who'd be seriously offended by that needs to take a drag, and chill. Racist, sexist and gay jokes are all part of macho posturing, and I imagine there's a lot of it in a sport like football. At least he's cultured enough to know that what he said wasn't appropriate for someone who people look up to, like himself.

I'd have to agree with you whole heartedly Masteen...and another thing I noticed in this thread is that you are all assuming the gay community actually cares about what this sports jock said, which in reality I doubt many of us domasteen wrote:John Rocker is a racist fuckwad. I don't speak for the gay community, but I'll tell you right now, if it cared about everytime the word faggot was used in this country by "role models" or "famous people"...it wouldn't have time to fight for the bigger issues at hand facing the gay community
Not to mention that trying to censor this guy or anyone from expressing their completely idiotic, unintelligent and uninformed opinion would be counterproductive to one of the biggest causes in the gay community - uncensoring cable TV from showing implicated gay sex and gay themed programming (other than the sad excuse of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy and Will And Grace - PS: Queer as Folk doesn't count since it's on Showtime). Hell, I'd love to see a gay drama on NBC...but if we choose to censor others, regardless of the reasons, we won't get what we want any sooner
So I think you're right in what you said Mid...I would say for the most party, intelligent gay people really aren't going to care about what some retarded sports "star" says about us

I don't see where he said anything about the gay community, really. He commented that he had to be careful how he described his team without crossing into what people would assume would be a gay description. I can see where people can say that he's homophobic, but it's not like he said anything overtly about gays.
I think that this is being made out to be a much larger issue than it is. Call him a homophobe if you'd like, but saying that he made a statement against gays in general is just stretching.

I'll give you one you can use against me for eternity. Fags are like carnival attractions. They are abnormal. It's no different than going to see the bearded lady, or the really abnormally large fat man, or the wolf-man, or the contortionist(sp?), .....or the man who acts and talks like a woman. It's a freak show, it's funny. People will always find a fag funny. A man who acts like a woman is funny. A woman who acts and talk like a man is funny. Different is fucking funny. Get over it.
A group a black guys make fun of a dorky white guy walking by....why? Because to them it's fucking funny. Chrizs Rock, Martin Lawrence, Damon Wayans have made a fucking career making fun of white people.
Different and abnormal is fucking funny.
Like let's make this like fucking math.

And I never said it was poor taste. I said it was poor judgement. It was poor judgement because he didn't think about the consequences before speaking, and he wasn't prepared to deal with those consequences, hence his retraction and apology.
Walking the line between comedy and bigotry is a fine line - and it's largely dependent on contex. In most settings, the things Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, and other racial comedians say on stage would be totally inappropriate. But they say it on stage, it's art, people don't take it seriously, and they laugh. Junior Seau says it at a team banquet, it isn't art, people take it seriously, and they get angry. Sorry, but that's the way it works.

No, not all gay men act like women. It just so happens that the majority of them do. Many may think they talk and act like everyone else, but most of them aren't fooling anyone.
And, yes I have considered you the same. And that will never change on my end. I like you a lot and think you have a great heart. I have witnessed your transition, coming out, etc. and am happy for you that you are now happier.

But, Mid, you have to understand, that coming from my standpoint - what you are suggesting is rather wrong on many levels..
It's as if I said "All white people act like racist assholes out only for money and power so that they can die and leave all their money to their racist asshole children and so on and so forth"...how can I possibly argue that when I know it just isn't true?
I will tell you, with all my heart, that not all gay men act like women or talk like women...those you are talking about, are in fact the minority in our community
I personally find extremely effeminate gay men hilarious and a hoot...but I do not like it when straight friends of mine expect me and other gay people to act like that when the cold hard truth is that America has focused its attention on a minority among the gay community and ended up branding the rest of us as just that
There -is- a group of gay guys that -do- act and talk like women, but that in no way suggests that all gay men are like that Mid...you are smart enough, I hope, to see the dilema I and probably many gay men have with what you've suggested

When lawyers and doctors are, that is when it disturbs me, because with a higher level of education usually comes an awareness that the ignorant views most people get from parents are wrong, and they outgrow such things.
But really the trend to make heroes of football players, baseball players, hockey players, race car drivers even is the real problem.
