And I am in vacuum heaven! The amount of dirt that came out of my carpet is amazing - and a bit disgusting :D

Yeah we got a Dyson Animal and the first time I ran it I was in shock. It is an amazing vacuumer!

Of course with 5 cats we have to vacuum often!

Tell me more. My home has central vacuum, but I suspect it does not suck as hard as I like.

Yeah, they're awesome. We sell them here at the Sharper Image and they had a promotion so I got one at half off! Woohoo!

We have central vacuum as well, and it's pretty shitty. Especially since we have 3 pets. I haven't even bothered to use it for years.

WTF is central vacuum?

I never thought I'd be spending $500 on a vacuum, but with all these glowing endorsements, I may have to reconsider.

central vac was a shitty idea with a shitty implementation.

You have a centrally located vac unit with lines run through the walls and ports in each room that you just plug your hose into (NO! NOT THAT HOSE!!!) and vac each room.

My Central Vac is a newer verson and does well to pick up hair and surface dirt. I actually like mine.

We are talking deep down dirt and ground in hair with the Dyson ... that I need to get with a baby about to start crawling about.

You get what you pay for just like anything else. My Mom's got one that does a fantastic job.

I second the question. I've never heard of this until I read this thread!

well xou, a central vaccuum is when you have a main vaccuum built into your house, usually in the basement (a basement is a floor of your house undernsath the ground, many homes that do not rest on wheels have them). there are outlets all over the house that you plug a hose into. instead of lugging the whole machine around you just have to lug the hose.

Wheels or not, there aren't a lot of houses in Florida with basements or central vacuum.

Yeah, I guess that's why I've never heard of it. I've lived in Texas and Florida -- both places have a severe shortage of homes with basements. (Read: None at all!)

I'm still not seeing the goodness of central vacuum. You're still lugging shit around (the hose), you still have to do the pushing. Does it empty itself?

Posted: July 25, 2005, 5:34 pm
by Sylvos
in a central vacuum you have a hose you carry which is light
each room has a hole you put the hose in.
its pretty handyif it DOES suck (hehe).

What would you rather lug around from room to room, up and down the stairs.... a 20 pound vacuum or 2 pounds of hose?

Does it empty itself?
No but a central unit makes it easier to empty and clean. Plus you can have a better filter system and more suction.

Not to mention it's a helluva lot quieter.

I don't know what kind of vacuum you are using, but mine has wheels (like my house hurr hurr kyoukan), so I ain't carrying shit.

lugging around a vaccuum is a lot heavier and awkward than a hose that probably weighs about a pound and a carpet attachment. especially since our house is pretty huge. you also don't have to worry about the unit banging into anything like furniture or doorways and leaving a mark. it's not a miraculous life altering change, but it's a lot more convenient. I'd never go out of my way to have it installed but since we were building the house and the contractor asked if we wanted it we said sure.

I considered Dyson for awhile when I was researching vacuums. For every glowing user review (on amazon.com) there seems to be another one stating what was wrong with them and telling people why they shouldn't get one. (Which really goes for just about any of the other vacuums)

Now, perhaps the good reviews are written by Dyson employess and perhaps the bad reviews are by Dyson competitors. However for $500 I decided I didn't want to take the risk.

My mother bought a Dyson (yellow) about 2 - 3 years ago now. Loved it the first time I used it. I just wish I could swing the $400 - $500 to afford one. Maybe when my current vacuum dies (soon, soon!).

get a hoover wind tunnel, its a better vaccuum and doesn't cost as much.
