Outpost (2008) DVD review

Post by Fairweather Pure »

This is a British Horror movie starring Ray Stevenson of Rome and Punisher fame. This was a total impulse buy. I was researching and buying movies that were war/horror hybrids. I read the description of The Outpost and took a chance. I had never heard of this movie before. Based on the jacket description, I was thinking nazi zombies. It's actually a bit more original than that and the movie is better for it.

I was rolling my eyes and kicking myself when the previews were showing on the DVD. It was all a bunch of fucking C-grade movies I had never even heard of a single movie in the previews. Worse yet, they looked like they'd been shot with a home video camera. I breathed a sigh of relief when the movie started though, since it looks like a theatrical release. As a matter of fact, the only clue that this was low budget film was the fact that it only had 2 real set pieces for the entire movie (the bunker above and below ground).

The movie is about a rag tag group of mercenaries that are paid to escort a scientist to an abandoned bunker in the middle of fucking no where eastern Europe. They arrive at the bunker and shit gets weird when they find a sole survivor in a room full of bodies deep within the bunker. Overall, the movie is actually pretty good.

The premise is explained pretty well, and it's only about 15 minutes in and we start seeing some freaky shit. Also, the movie gets props for only being 90 minutes long. As I've stated in past reviews, sometimes this is a good thing and it is especially true with a movie like this. My wife also enjoyed it since it wasn't "super scary" according to her.

I cannot help but be reminded of Below when I watched this movie. Both are virtually unheard of horror films that I think were done well and deserve to be seen by a wider audience. If you liked Below, than I think it's a safe bet that you would enjoy this.

I give a solid 7/10 for The Outpost. It's definately worth a rental, although I'm glad I bought it for my collection. It will get plenty of viewings.
