'Titanfall,' the best thing at Gamescom 2013

Respawn Entertainment's debut title won more than 60 awards when it was unveiled at E3 this year, and now that I've played it for the first time, I can see why. Titanfall remixes the familiar first-person shooter with elements from other game genres and, thanks to some meticulously balanced gameplay, delivers a cohesive and refreshing original experience.

The only 2 times I have problems with Kinect 1 in regards to voice controls are when the other people in the room won't STFU and when the TV is so loud that it masks everything else.

Most other issues can be resolved via an audio recalibration.

What was there to confirm? They've said that numerous times. Not like they'd change their mind or anything. Ooooo BURN!

My way of dealing with it: Buying a PS4. Hopefully many more people deal with it in that manner!

Cool of them to confirm they will never sell a Xbone without an overpriced peripheral that will never get supported because nobody fucking wants it. It is kind of like Ford announcing they are raising prices on all their cars by $5000 globally and attaching six foot high gold plated spoilers to everything they sell.

Of course MS is about as dedicated to their own declarations as the short guy on Lost was to his. It could be as early as later this evening they announce a Kinect-less Xbone for $399. And two second after that, Winnow shitposting about how genius they are to do it.

Atari founder Nolan Bushnell has chosen Microsoft to emerge victorious against Sony in the next-generation console race. Speaking on GameTrailers' Rollin' With Nolan, the industry veteran claimed Sony will be held back by "lame" and difficult-to-understand software tools.

"I personally believe Microsoft is in a superior position, and the reason is Sony, whenever they change consoles, the software tools that they have are lame," Bushnell said. "A lot of times in the past they were in Japanese; not well documented and getting the software development community up to speed…they may have been able to do it in Japan, but the American software community just says 'Oh boy, what a pain.'
I guess Nolan knows nothing!
Abbott added that the PS4 version of Contrast was up and running before all other versions. Porting to PS4, and to an extent PS3, was "substantially earlier" than doing so for Xbox 360.

"You don't have to significantly optimize it [between PC and PS4,]" he said. "The architecture is much simpler — it's not trivial to do it, but it takes a lot less time."
It sounds like PS4 is easier to get games going on than the 360. And probably XBO as well. For multiplatform console games PS4 will probably be the lead console with XBO being the lowly port. Which means developers probably wont bother utilizing that fancy esram. /frowny face

This demo of face scan for Kinect is pretty badass.

Check this out:

The female face scan is pretty impressive. The Xbox One kinect sports looks improved but even just using the scan feature to make your avatar looks like fun and useful to place your avatar in the game.

The PlayStation 4 is out in the US on November 15. The Xbox One? Well, it's looking like it could hit the market a week ahead of its competitor.

While Microsoft is yet to officially announce the big day, and "release dates" on retailer sites are usually little more than window dressing, we've heard from someone a little closer to the launch that Microsoft is planning a November 8 release for its latest console.

The source, who works for a marketing company that handles signage and product placement for retail giant Walmart, passed along what they say is an email for a company conference call that lists all the midnight openings the chain has planned.

As you can see, alongside the big holiday games, and just before the PS4, is the Xbox One, at November 8. Note however that, unlike every other date listed, the Xbox One's lacks a "confirmed" status, suggesting Microsoft is yet to lock the date down.
Image

Maybe Sony will jump to Nov 1st and then Xbox One to Oct 25th, then we'll only be 2 months away from launch.

Good god, that only gives Microsoft enough time for ten or fifteen more humiliating policy reversals before launch day. Twenty at the most! maybe enough time for a minor hardware re-design to put the USB ports right under winnow's should blades on the small of his back, which is obviously the most convenient place for them. Only a complete fucking retard would want them on the front panel like those dimwits at Sony.

If you're a Time Warner Cable customer, your Xbox 360 can now double as a cable box. After promising to bring live programming to Microsoft's console in June, Time Warner Cable is today making good on its word. The TWC TV app will let you watch up to 300 channels; specific availability will vary depending on what's included in your cable package. You can even see what your Xbox Live friends are watching assuming they're also TWC subscribers. Sadly Time Warner Cable's video-on-demand offerings aren't part of the app just yet, but the company says it's working with Microsoft to add that functionality in the future. With today's release, Time Warner Cable joins Verizon and Comcast as TV partners that have embraced Microsoft's console. Microsoft's focus on the living room is set to grow even larger with the impending release of Xbox One.
Time Warner, Verizon and Comcast so far. Need Cox to join in.

Not really. They have 70 Billion in Cash. Sony -14 Billion

Windows 9 out next year. Most of the Windows 8 whiners will buy that and Microsoft will add another 7-8 Billion to their cash pile.

At some point maybe they'll just buy Sony and liquidate their assets. Probably after PS4 flops in a year or so.

Yesterday, we heard from a source at a marketing company who had seen documentation pencilling the Xbox One in for a tentative, unconfirmed November 8 launch. Today, a source close to Microsoft tells us that's not the case.

The source says to expect the console at a date later than November 8, though obviously still in the month of November, as that's the release window Microsoft has promised for some time.

The best time to buy an xbox one will be a week or so after xmas when all the retards that pre-ordered one with fantasies about selling them for $2000 on ebay are just trying to make part of their money back. You'll be able to buy a brand new one off craigslist for two or three hundred dollars. That is if you don't have a PC good enough to run Titanfall, which is really the only reason to buy this lump of underpowered shit.

Sony's Jim Ryan: Giving Away FIFA 14 on Day One is "Rather Odd'
Sounds like Xbox One including a free copy FIFA 14 is making an impact on sales with the Euros. No other reason he'd say it's "odd". If it didn't make a difference he wouldn't have said shit. Nothing odd about it. They're offering a free game that euros like. I guess they'd think it really odd if they offered another free game...and super odd if they offered three!

Microsoft most likely has more total launch units to sell than Sony. If the previous articles about there being maybe up to twice as many Xbox Ones as PS4's initially and Microsoft's superior supply chain, it will make a difference. The separation is only $40.00 now in Europe, plus you get a kinect whether they use it or not, at least it comes with it and all units remain uniform for developers. Eye toy being separate pretty much fucks that market.

Really smart move on Microsoft's part since they have shit tons of cash to throw around and Sony needs to sell insurance just to stay afloat.
NINTENDO ON NEXT-GEN LINEUPS: 'MEH'
Not that Nintendo matters one fucking bit in this this generation's race, but that comment is laughable considering the Wii U's launch lineup.

Honestly is anyone going to be swayed one way or another at this point? Pretty much most everyone already knows what they will be purchasing. The wild card is 'random' sales by parents purchasing something at Christmas for their kid(s) and not knowing any better.
Winnow wrote:Sounds like Xbox One including a free copy FIFA 14 is making an impact on sales with the Euros. No other reason he'd say it's "odd".
You sure have weird logic. How would Sony even know anything about Euro sales of XBO? Unless you mean there are less PS4 sales in the past week or whatever. But considering most launch models were already sold out not sure how that's even verifiable. Anyway he stated why he thought it was odd:
Although he didn't cite exact pre-order numbers, Ryan claims the PlayStation 4 is "still doing fine" against the Xbox One.

"It varies from retailer to retailer and it varies from country to country, but I’m not hearin’ of too many places at all – at all – where they’re ahead of us."

Ryan is confident there is no need for Sony to offer consumers a direct equivalent to Microsoft's FIFA 14 pre-order deal.

"Why should we do that? Our problem is gonna be matching supply to demand. It’s perfectly rational when a platform holder, or indeed a publisher, runs a pre-order campaign to engage in promotional behaviour to dial it up if you feel it’s not where you need it to be. That’s a rational thing for any businessman to do. We’re perfectly happy with where our pre-orders are.

"Our problem… we’ve actually had to turn off the day one pre-orders and now we’re onto day two. So why would we go out and add something? Giving away stuff on day one of a new platform launch, in my mind it’s kind of odd."

Ryan has no concerns over inadequacy of supply come the PlayStation 4's launch, and believes any lack of stock would be driven by consumer demand being greater than Sony anticipated.
Sony already has over a million preorders for the PS4. I don't think they are too concerned with their console bombing like the Wii U. And unfortunately I don't think the XBO will bomb either although it would be nice!

Yeah, but if the previous article was accurate about total number of units, Xbox One has more, maybe a lot more, and both with sell out. And with Microsoft limiting the number of release countries at launch, that adds even more units to sell for eligible Euro countries. It wasn't a supply issue it was a kinect localization issue so they'll have shit tons of units to move in Europe.

Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland will have to wait, but who cares about them! UK and Germany are primary.

It's region free so those other countries can buy one and import it if they really want to.
"People assume there's a volume issue which in fact there isn't," Penello said. "You're actually seeing pre-orders pop back up now because we're able allocate the countries' volumes back in. It's there; the problem is localization. And once people see the system and how integral it is – it's not just text integration."

The new Kinect doesn't work like the Xbox 360 Kinect, and its new features make localization more difficult, Penello said.

"I think people are using the way [voice] works on Xbox 360, which was an accessory we built five years after release, as how it's going to work here," he said. "But it's so much more elegant and so much more integrated, and in many ways it's a lot faster and more convenient, whereas on Xbox 360 it's a lesser version of doing the thing you're used to doing on your controller."

The Xbox One will launch as scheduled this November in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the UK, the US and New Zealand.

Come and get it Euros!

------

Someone's first impressions with the Xbox One:
Dead Rising 3

While playing the spectacularly violent and blood-filled zombie killer Dead Rising 3 I was treated to what the developer called "next gen felt" on the shark suit worn by my character.

Literally hundreds of zombies can be onscreen at once in Dead Rising 3 and every single one of them is different. Running over them with the bastard lovechild of a road roller and a bike certainly fills the screen with gallons of blood and gore, but look more closely and you'll see each and every zombie is damaged and cut up in a different way. The team behind Dead Rising 3 even made sure bones and organs were modeled correctly, so they'd look right as you drive a hatchet through them.

Another example of the One's extra power is the lack of loading screens; where previously Dead Rising would load up an area of its map every few hundreds yards, the third installed on the One is completely open all of the time; there is zero loading time as you progress through the world, no matter where you go or how many zombies are after you.

The big feature of Dead Rising 3, away from it being completely accessible all of the time, is the ability to combine weapons and vehicles to make hybrids. Take a gun and a flamethrower, and combine them into something which does both, or combine a bike and a road roller to create a fast-moving, zombie-crushing machine.

Borrowing from the outrageousness of Saints Row The Third, Dead Rising 3 lets you wear a wide range of clothes and outfits. Smash into a tailors and put on a James Bond-style dinner jacket and bowtie, or raid a fancy dress shop and roam the streets dressed as a shark (with next gen felt, naturally); and all of these outfits, along with your combo weapons, can be kept safe in a number of lockers dotted around the map. Any clothing or weapons can be accessed from any locker.

Finally, our demonstration showed how the game interacts with tablets and smartphones through the Smart Glass app. A tablet can be used to view the map, while calls from other characters in the game can be taken on your own smartphone. These calls unlock exclusive missions only playable when the One is connected to Smart Glass devices, and adds a clever new dimension to console gaming.
Forza Motorsport 4

The first thing I noticed when burying the throttle was that the One's controller vibrates through the triggers used for the accelerator and brake. It's a very strange sensation at first, but makes perfect sense; the harder you squeeze the accelerator, the more it'll vibrate, encouraging you to manage the throttle until initial wheelspin has resided; the same goes for braking - squeeze too hard and the wheels lock up, signalled with heavy vibration.

More tip-of-the-finger than seat-of-the-pants, but it works well and was particularly useful for being alerted to wheelspin when I struggled to hear the engine noise over dozens of journalists playing other games around me.

The attention to detail in Forza is, as always, astonishing. The McLaren, for example, has three layers of paint in the real world (base coat, colour, metallic flake) and so does the model in Forza, which has three layers of digital paint and reflects in sunlight accordingly.
Kinect 2.0

Kinect 2.0 is all-new, boasting HD video, infrared, and the ability to work out where your joints are, where your weight and centre of gravity is, and the strength of your movements.

What this means, is that a gentle punch or kick will be recognised as exactly that, while the Kinect knows when you've applied more force, and it can do this to an astonishing degree of accuracy.

A demonstration of the new Kinect Sports for Xbox One showed how the Kinect can be used to recreate yourself as a 3D game character. The camera scans your height and general measurements, then takes a closer look to analyse more than 1,000 points of reference to create your face and hair.

A lot has been made of the Xbox One's entertainment and TV credentials, but as I'm yet to see these in action I can't possibly judge them yet. As for gaming, the Kinect potential is vast - providing developers embrace all it has to offer - and while graphics have probably reached their limit, the One's ability to do more at once is obvious.

When the Xbox One was still an always-connected console, Microsoft had a used game retail system ready to roll out. It meant selling and sharing games with others would be a managed experience rather than what we currently have with current gen consoles. With Microsoft U-turning on the feature, we will continue to have the same experience for used games on physical discs.

But what about games you download? Currently you can’t resell them once purchased. With download content becoming a much bigger part of the console experience, that’s going to be a bigger issue for gamers, especially if download prices match those of physical discs.

Microsoft is at least thinking about trying something a bit different with the Xbox One, though, by toying with the idea of allowing you to resell download games as part of an online marketplace.

A survey Microsoft recently sent out to some users included a question that started with the following statement:

For the following questions please assume that Microsoft Xbox One will offer a digital marketplace where you can purchase and sell digital video games.

It then goes on to explain how such a service would require an Xbox Live Gold account in order to function, would require all transactions be carried out via Xbox Live, and can only be carried out using the console. You could sell your digital-only games, trade them for other games, and there’s even a description of variable game pricing based on the features you opt for. So maybe that means including the DLC packs or not for a used title sale.

This is just a survey question and by no means something that is going to happen. However, it is clearly something Microsoft is thinking about, and to be honest, needs to think about for the future. If physical discs are going to disappear eventually, gamers will demand the ability to sell their download games when they are through playing them.

Of course, I’m sure developers and publishers would be happy if used games disappeared completely instead.
Despite clueless end users holding up the works with their mad love for physical disks shoved into slots, Microsoft is still looking into ways to improve the real area of growth, digital downloads and sharing.

When users start to get a clue about all the cool things Microsoft wanted to originally do and still want to implement with the Xbox One, PS4 will die. I give it a year. Less than that if the handful of Sony servers fail.

When Xbox One launches in November, it'll be available in 12 countries. But the much-touted Xbox One Kinect voice control will only be ready in five of those countries.

Nestled deep in its promotional material, Microsoft tells potential buyers that "Xbox voice commands will not be available in all markets on the product release date." The detail goes on to say that its voice service will only be available in the Unites States, Canada, UK, France and Germany.

That leaves the following launch nations without the service - Australia, Austria, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, and New Zealand.

Looks like Microsoft's decision to not make the Kinect mandatory was not due to "popular" demand but more because their product is clearly not ready.

It's not ready for the less significant countries. Who cares except for the people in those countries...which leads back to "who cares?"

I appreciate Microsoft trying to push forward with the way we interact with our gaming/entertainment. Kinect 2 has a lot of potential and if a company that has assloads of cash wants to do something that maybe everyone isn't ready for, more power to them. We've seen from the retarded response to digital sharing that the public in general are idiots. Apple also saw this and designed products that users didn't ask for. iPad? no one else had the balls to introduce it or at least design a decent one and market it. Now every Android wannabe maker is scrambling to catch up as well as Microsoft. Same with the iPhone a few years back. Microsoft has vision. They showed that with tablets many years back but they are horrible at marketing. It's entirely possible that Apple will design a motion/voice controlled gaming system and product rape all the other companies again as people will flock to it.

As long as Microsoft got rid of their horrible stacked ranking employee review system, I'm on board with their future.

I see that Sony is now saying their little eye camera is capable of voice commands. Way to jump on the bandwagon! Thankfully, I don't think Microsoft will add a huge neon glowing light stick to the side of their console or add a huge glowing light to their controllers to match Sony's "innovation".

Pretty sure that was available in the EyeToy. Which predates Kinect so... Yeah. I wouldn't call Microsoft innovators in that area.

It must have sucked because no one remembers it. So you could control your console using the original EyeToy? Link please!
The EyeToy is a color digital camera device, similar to a webcam, for the PlayStation 2. The technology uses computer vision and Gesture recognition to process images taken by the camera. This allows players to interact with games using motion, color detection and also sound, through its built-in microphone. It was released in October 2003.

The camera is manufactured by Logitech (known as "Logicool" in Japan), although newer EyeToys are manufactured by Namtai. The camera is mainly used for playing EyeToy games developed by Sony and other companies. It is not intended for use as a normal PC camera, although some people have developed unofficial drivers for it.[1] The EyeToy is compatible with the PlayStation 3 and can be used for purposes such as video chatting.[3] As of November 6, 2008, the EyeToy has sold 10.5 million units worldwide.[4]
Where's the reference to voice commands? All I see is chatting like any other mic.
Remember the PlayStation Eye? It was a camera peripheral for the PS3 that was used in a variety of motion-control games. An improved version of the camera, known simply as the PlayStation Camera, will launch alongside the PS4, but unlike the Xbox One's Kinect 2.0, won't be bundled with the system, meaning you'll have to shell out an extra sixty bucks for it. It will support some cool new features such as Kinect-style voice commands.
Ah, "Kinect-style voice commnds" who's the copycat?

Everything Sony does online is copying what came first, and is still far superior on Microsoft Live.

When Xbox One "matches" PS4's "features", they are going backwards, not forwards in innovation due to public ignorance.
SCEA's group manager of retail training and advocacy Sean Coleman outlined some PlayStation Camera features at the GameStop 2013 Expo in Las Vegas this week. "From navigational voice commands to facial recognition, the PlayStation Camera adds incredible innovation to your gaming."

The PlayStation Camera will have some unique functionality with the new DualShock 4 controllers. It will be able to use facial recognition to detect who is holding which controller, and apply that player's preferred controller profile.

These kind of features make it look more and more like the camera was originally planned to be bundled with the PS4, and then removed to cut down on costs.
Half-assed launch with 3 unique crappy titles, like their half-assed online streaming promises based on a little company acquired a year ago that may or may not pan out.

Or you can go with a company with rock solid 300K servers with dedicated game servers that knew enough to introduct their console with everything needed for the future of the product instead of wondering if their users will pick up the capabilities at a later date. Sony doesn't have much to pimp anymore so they keep talking about "indie" games while Microsoft has already announced their new every console is an SDK kit and new extremely indie friendly publishing system for developers.

It may take a year for the dust to settle as Sony's online/programming/updating incompetence becomes apparent but Microsoft has this generation locked up. Christ, even the "for gamers" slogan Sony chanted is a joke when you look at their measily 3 unique launch titles compared to Microsofts and even the three they have are ass-bad compared to Microsofts...and even the future games are better on Xbox One like Titanfall which is winning awards. Indies...lol, that's like if Apple kept claiming fart apps were the reason iPhone is a success.

But PS4 has DDR5!11! Are you fucking kidding me? Look at the god damned Wii. Most people are absolute dumbasses and thought composite cables with 480P hooked up to their 200 pound 32 inch CRT TV looked fabulous. Microsoft has the true innovation and couch potato TV viewing public's interests at heart. Sony won't last long screaming about their console being "for gamers" when even that's not true, much less any other aspects of the console.

That sure is a lot of words, most of which I didn't read, to basically say you agree that Kinect voice controls aren't any earth shattering innovation. I accept your apology.

Microsoft has partnered with the Doritos and Mountain Dew brands to give away thousands of Xbox Ones in exchange for the longevity of your health, a press release revealed last week.

Specially-marked packages of Mountain Dew and Doritos will contain codes to be used as currency in online auctions for Xbox One consoles beginning on November 5. Participants can begin to stockpile codes on the contest's website on September 30, but nothing's stopping anyone from stockpiling the snack foods for the next two months.
First, Doritos and Mountain Dew should never be mentioned in the same sentence as "longevity of your heath". Second, whats with all the codes? Whatever happened to a simple "you won!" notice in the bottom of the cap?

It's like Saints Row but with zombies. The fire breathing Bull mascot looks fun.

A one week difference shouldn't have a huge effect, but good on MS getting it as close as they could. MS and Sony are at each other's throats this gen and it's great to watch. The customers will win in the end!

One week could be the perfect time frame if Sony fails to handle the updates/initial wave of buyers due to their weak online network and general incompetence, you'll have some returned PS4s with Xbox One's waiting for them to buy the next week. And then all the people posting that they're waiting to buy will get those refurbs in a month or two.

I'm just glad launch day isn't Black Friday. At least now I can find a parking spot within two miles of the mall to pick up my Xbox One the day it's released.

Why would you get yours a week before me? I arranged for day one store pick up at Best Buy for both consoles back in June. If they release at midnight, it will be you waiting until the delivery dude arrives.

I'll play the majority of the new games on the PS4, which releases a week earlier. That's the joke!

Fable Legends for Xbox One looks promising:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjbF_rNGR08&hd=1
Rediscover Fable - Return to a well-loved world of magic, humour and high adventure. Find thrilling stories, exciting combat, and exceptional characters.

In Fable Legends, your Hero will never be alone. You can play the game single player, with a party of three A.I companions that follow your lead. Or, you can play cooperatively with up to three of your friends to discover the game's quests and content.

Fable has always allowed players with an evil streak to express themselves, and Fable Legends presents new opportunities for villainy. Instead of controlling a single character, you command the many creatures, traps, and environmental challenges that the Heroes must struggle to overcome.

Microsoft Plans $40 Billion Buyback, Boosts Dividend
Not sure I agree with this move. Microsoft could have instead bought Sony three times over and dissolved it. (except for their HIGHLY profitable insurance division!)

Instead, Microsoft spends their cash on increasing shareholder value. Imagine that!

Sony can't even dream of 40 Billion much less spend it on buying back shares. Sony's busy selling their assets to stay afloat.

I'm just upset that I can't say Microsoft has 70 BILLION to throw around anymore...well unless their buyback plan matches the pace of their quarterly profits in which case they'll just sit on 70 BILLION instead of increase their cash to ridiculevels.

I hear Sony cleared like 10 million the other quarter. Sweet! That leaves 13,990,000,000 left of debt to pay off!
Microsoft is exploring hundreds of TV programs for Xbox One

Microsoft is looking into hundreds of potential TV concepts for Xbox One, beyond the already revealed Halo spin-off, Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer told Bloomberg during this year's TGS event in Japan.

"They have literally hundreds of ideas that they are incubating right now," said Spencer, referring to the company's new the LA studio. "We will have some new announcement for TV shows coming pretty soon."

This will include shows dedicated to international sports, which Spencer states the companies believes to be "a very interesting category globally."

Earlier in May, Microsoft revealed director Steven Spielberg will be behind an upcoming Xbox One TV series based on the Halo franchise. Spencer previously told Polygon: "I think much like Halo begat the Xbox," he said, "I think the Halo TV series can have a pretty dramatic impact on how people think about television."
Why not when you have 70 BILLION in cash to play with!

The Xbox One was not designed to support vertical orientation, according to Xbox senior director of product management and planning Albert Panello.

Speaking with GameSpot, Panello said players who choose to use the console in an upright position risk damaging it.

"We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk," Panello said, noting that "it wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both."

Panello said that Microsoft "found, interestingly enough, that 80 percent of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox [360] horizontally."

Both the original and slim models of the PlayStation 3 as well as the PlayStation 4 feature slot loading drives, although players can set the consoles vertically or horizontally without risk of damage.
Another Pro for the PS4: Can be used vertically.

haha, do anything with your Microsoft console at your own risk. Including turning it on and playing games with it.

My fourth 360 sounds like a cessna trying to pull up out of a stall. I have bought products off of TV commercials at 3 in the morning that are better quality than any piece of shit MS has ever made.

Best Buy is like the only company offering a product replacement for the Xbone. I don't know what dolt in management at that chain was thinking, but anyone retarded enough to buy this machine coming up better get it there and buy the longest warranty they have to offer. Also don't buy any shares in Best Buy because this product replacement plan will put them out of business by 2015.

My Xbox is fine since 2005. It has an amazing laser having played a bazillion pirated games. Best electronic device ever.

Most likely it's abuse, like constant sub zero temperatures, that have caused issues with other frigid weather people.
