The Xbox One game console will enable all users of a single console to enjoy the benefits of a single users' Xbox Live Gold account, Microsoft announced this afternoon. This initiative, called "Home Gold," includes online multiplayer, various streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, NFL), Game DVR and the One Guide -- services that are specifically enabled through Xbox Live Gold membership ($60 a year). That also includes digital games that any user of a single Xbox One purchased as well, a variant of functionality that Microsoft previously promised with Xbox One and subsequently rolled back after consumers reacted negatively.

Microsoft's Xbox VP Marc Whitten announced as much on the company's Xbox news site, Xbox Wire, where he wrote:

"It means that your account and your gamertag are truly yours. You don't have to share your gamertag for multiplayer gaming with others in your home, or see recommendations for your kid's cartoons next to the recommended first-person shooter for you. It also means that you can introduce new games and enjoy multiplayer with friends while they are at your house. Last but not least, it also means that when you buy one Xbox Live Gold membership, multiple people can enjoy the best benefits of Xbox Live Gold on your Xbox One at no additional charge."

Apparently the same XBL Gold account can be signed in on both an Xbox One and an Xbox 360; as expected, Xbox 360 Gold accounts carry over to Xbox One, though this is the first we're hearing about peaceful co-existence between the two consoles. We'll surely hear more from Whitten and co. in Cologne, Germany during Gamescom 2013 in just a few weeks.

I don't know if the Sony's Plus works the same way but it's nice to see this confirmed. Looks like they're trying to keep as much of the sharing active as they can.

I might be crazy but I was positive they had announced that all users in the console would have access to gold services if at least one account on the box had gold.

They hadn't yet revealed the Home Gold name but the reset I had thought was already out there.

Use Money instead of Points on Xbox

Transactions on Xbox will soon take place using your local currency instead of Microsoft Points. This change will make it even easier for you to access and enjoy the games, apps, HD movies and TV shows, and other great content you love on Xbox!

After the next Xbox 360 system update, when you next choose to initiate a purchase or redeem a Points card or code with your Microsoft account, we’ll put into your account an amount of currency equal to or greater than the marketplace value of your Microsoft Points. Your Microsoft Points will be retired, and you’ll immediately be able to use your new funds, in addition to other current payment methods available in your region, to purchase content from your favorite Xbox stores – or the Windows Phone Store on Windows Phone 8. For your current Microsoft Points balance, go to http://www.xbox.com/account.

Xbox Gift Cards (denominated in your local currency) will be available through our online retailers’ websites and in local retail stores starting in late 2013, and can be added to your Microsoft account at that time. In the meantime, please continue to purchase and redeem Microsoft Points cards and codes – we’ll accept them until further notice. The funds we put into your account at the time of the transition will expire in June 2015. Microsoft Points codes you received as part of Xbox Live Rewards, promotions, or contests will retain their original expiration dates after your account transitions.

For more information on the transition and what to expect, please visit http://www.xbox.com/pointsfaq.

I'm in the beta and my points converted over when I kicked up the store last week. I'm unsure how many I had but I ended up with a credit of 2.53$.

It's about fucking time. Although being as it's Microsoft they'll probably still require you to buy certain chunks of money at a time, and they'll make those chunks bigger than anything usually costs, so you always have to put more on than you need.

Sounds awesome for 360 users on the Family Plan!
In preparation for how Xbox Live will function once Xbox One gets here, Microsoft will convert Gold family subscriptions to individual accounts beginning on Aug. 27. Since everyone in the house will now have to pay for a subscription, Microsoft is adding another three months of Gold to anyone affected.

An how it actually will work:
Through the new Home Gold feature on Xbox One, a single Xbox Live Gold membership will allow anyone in your home to enjoy many Gold features like multiplayer, access to Gold entertainment apps, and more on your Xbox One.
One Xbox Live Gold account while everyone has their own unique Live account.

Xbox One no longer requires Kinect to be plugged in

Microsoft is making another Xbox One policy change by allowing gamers to use the upcoming console without Kinect. When Microsoft originally unveiled the Xbox One in May, the company said the Kinect would be a mandatory part of the system that needed to be plugged in at all times. Speaking to IGN, Xbox chief product officer Marc Whitten has revealed that it will no longer be required. "Like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in," explains Whitten, "although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor."
http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/12/46155 ... plugged-in

There you go tin hat people.

Now you'll eventually get a $299 Xbox One that will destroy PS4.

Ha. Microsoft is comedy gold with reversing one thing after another. Simply because they knew Sony would crush them and their stupid policies with the PS4. Do they even have anything left to 180 on?

Regardless... XBO could be free and I wouldn't bother to waste the electricity to operate it.

It is pretty funny watching highly paid corporate executives who are compensated supposedly based on their skill and education hilariously backpedal on every stupid policy they have tried to foist on the public. At this point they should probably just buy a bunch of PS4's and re-brand them as an Xbox One. At least that way Xbox users will get a more powerful machine. They can even buy them at $399 and slap that cheap $5 webcam on it and sell it at a profit to fucking retards like Winnow at $499. Then keep charging them $60/year to record video and download 4 year old Xbox Live games FOR FREE.

I'm glad consumers still have a voice when it comes to products. It's nice to see people who buy consoles (and pay for games) prefer Playstation 4 over Xbone and WiiU combined when they are presented with clear choice between a user friendly device that does everything games want vs. a hunk of fucking Microsoft shit that you practically have to swipe your credit card through to turn the power on.

Microsoft just sent me an unsolicited email telling me how lucky I am that I can use actual currency to buy shit on their store. Hooray? I've been doing that for seven years on my PS3. Oh cool, I don't get to buy points in lots of 500 or 1000 anymore to pay for things that all cost 800 points. Thanks for stopping stealing from me, MS!

Nice to see a huge company that actually makes a profit instead of being in a huge debt hole battling hedge funds make changes so fast.

Sony appears to be doing everything it can to try and get people to buy their console...but what's the biggest change between console generations? This time Sony is charging for online multiplayer. I'd expect more people to moe to Xbox where the online gaming is superior now that both companies charge. May as well go with the best. Once the PS4 is crushed, Microsoft can go back and implement the digital sharing options that are best for the majority and give a hearty "fuck you" to the hard copy shove a disk in a slot DRM lovers.

All great changes. Now they just need a Kinect-less version for $399 and MS will be where they should have been at the start. I'm glad they listened to the overwhelming amount of complaints. I'll possibly look into getting one when there is a Titanfall bundle, but PS4 gets my launch money, all multiplatform games, and I'll be spending the lion's share on that console this gen.

Watching the talking heads scramble to fix the myriad of mistakes under the guise of "Yeah, we were totally going to do this the entire time!" is pretty fun to observe. Honestly, they should do some sort of special event when they complete their 180th 180.

Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer has teased a 'unique exclusive' coming to Xbox One to feature during its Gamescom showcase on August 20.

"We're going to have a really short stage presentation with some news talking about some unique exclusive coming to [Xbox One]," said Spencer during a recent Major Nelson podcast. The anonymity of the title in question suggests we could be in for an entirely new game reveal at the show.

Spencer also teased that the showcase will discuss "Europe's biggest franchise and maybe some interesting things there".
Yet more good news for Xbox One.

What's "good news" about that? Why not wait until the super mysterious reveal! It's probably some stupid sports game like FIFA.

Besides which they copied the PS4 roadmap. As posted awhile ago in the PS4 thread:
Sony once again has found a way to one up Microsoft. After announcing at its Xbox One unveiling in May that it had 15 games in development, eight of which were exclusives, Sony Europe CEO Jim Ryan told Gamereactor that it has 30 PlayStation 4 exclusives in development, 20 of which will arrive in the console’s first year and at least 12 of which are brand new franchises. Some of those currently unannounced PS4 games will be revealed at the German Gamescom convention in August, Ryan hinted.

“I’m sure you heard from [SCE Worldwide Studios boss] Shu [Yoshida] that he has—just his studios—he has 30 games in development,” he said. “Twenty of them are going to ship within the first year of the console’s life, and of those, 12 are new IP. So there’s a lot going on, it’s just that we need to keep stuff back. We’ve got Gamescom for us Europeans—we need to have something to show at Gamescom, don’t we?”
MORE GOOD NEWS FOR PLAYSTATION 4!

BTW: 'more' seems to imply there was some 'good news' for the XBO. What was it?

Nice. Miscrosoft can't even deliver what they promised. How can I trust them with that fancy new cloud technology!
At E3, we announced that Xbox One would be available in 21 markets around the world at launch. This was an aggressive goal and the team has been working very hard to deliver Xbox One to as many markets as possible.

Our priority is ensuring our customers get the best Xbox One experience the first day it is available. To do that, and in order to meet demand, we have adjusted the number of markets that will receive Xbox One in November to 13 markets, including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand, in November.

We remain committed to launching Xbox One in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, as soon as possible in 2014.

While we wish we could launch Xbox One simultaneously in these markets, there are many factors that determine the timing of specific market launches. This includes work to localize the Xbox One dash, incorporate additional voice and languages, and build partnerships to bring apps and meaningful local content to each country.
Then again I'm sure people in those 8 countries were planning on picking up a PS4 instead.

Season Pass Guarantee apparently coming to both systems.

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/08/14/xbox- ... n-both-ga/
The Season Pass Guarantee allows players to receive Xbox 360 season pass content on Xbox One for free, if they own the game on both consoles. Microsoft announced the program today, noting that EA, Activision and Ubisoft have signed up for the program. Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 will include the Season Pass Guarantee.

Activision and EA revealed earlier today that Ghosts and BF4, respectively, will be able to share season pass content from current-gen to next-gen systems – including from Playstation 3 to Playstation 4. There's no word if Playstation has a similar first-party season pass system in the works.

They intended Titanfall to be multiplatform, they came to both Sony and Microsoft. PS4 just doesnt have the power to support the games specs according to the developers.

Fair enough. It's still coming to PC though so you can't say "Xbox One Only" unless you specify you're talking specifically about console platforms in there somewhere. Otherwise you 're misleading the reader and you wouldn't want to do that would you?

Titanfall looks great, Dead Rising 3 looks great, and the fact that MS will be getting both CoD and BF4 DLC a month or more before the PS4 is a big deal to a lot of people. Honestly, Sony should have done everything possible to keep BF4 as more of a "Playstation thing" like how MS makes CoD more of a "Xbox thing". I think MS is launching with stronger exclusives but Sony will pull ahead in a short amount of time. The FIFA thing is smart too, but only to "Tier 1" countries is another burn to those that they are turning their backs to.

Microsoft unveiling Xbox One indie developer self-publishing program was expected but cool. Two free devkits per dev, full access, no fees. It keeps happening over and over but it always makes me giggle every time I see another 180.

Some cool stuff here.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/21/46437 ... escom-2013

On login and friends list:
It starts with logging in; Pocket-lint reports that Xbox One permits up to six accounts to be signed in simultaneously, with Kinect able to distinguish between those users by the sound of their voice. You can tell the console to display your friends list, for example, and if another player makes the same request moments later, Xbox One is smart enough to know which list should be on screen. And you'll likely be looking at those lists frequently on Xbox One since they're getting far more useful. You can "follow" up to 1,000 friends, but the number of followers you can ultimately tally is limitless. Your favorite multiplayer pals can be pinned to a favorites section to speed up party formation and get you into a game
On controlling other devices in your entertainment system:
There's good news for home theater enthusiasts, too. Microsoft is taking advantage of the console's IR blaster in a big way. The Xbox One can control individual components of your living room setup — a TV, receiver, etc. — recognizing commands like "Xbox, volume up" to make quick changes. The configuration process reportedly resembles that of a Harmony remote; you simply search for a device in your home theater chain rather than dealing with codes or other cumbersome menus.
From what I read in the past, apparently the IR blaster will be build into the Kinect. Not sure is those IR signals will be bounced off walls or how this works however.

On Game DRV'ing
And as far as the in-game DVR goes, "Xbox, record that" is the prompt you'll be saying to capture your last 30 seconds of gameplay. From there, clips can be shared to a variety of video services via a dedicated Upload app that can be snapped to the side of your screen. Gameplay is preserved in 720p at 30 frames-per-second.
Not sure how this will work when someone turns off or disconnects Kinect.

Totally serious non-trolling question here.. But does anyone find that convenient? I find just pushing a button so much easier. So if you want to bump up the volume three levels you have to say "Xbox, volume up" three times? To me that just doesn't sound efficient. I can see if you lose your remote or something but other than that... Buttons, please! Even if they are just virtual buttons on a tablet app or something.

It sounds like it wont. Too bad those awesome XBO controllers are lacking a Share button.

That one remains to be seen once it ships. I wonder how it will differentiate between the volume on different devices. Would be AMAZING of they made those media and volume controls part of SmartGlass.

I'm fairly sure that you can accomplish this by hitting the guide and selecting an option. The only downside I can see is if that's a rolling 30 second window though. There's a risk of missing the cool bit of the action if so.

Right because if you have to go into the guide to do it, you're interrupting the video feed and gameplay, either way. The button on the controller is a much better idea for capturing video of gameplay, no contest.

Um No, instructing the console to record by voice is easier, No contest. No button to hit.

Except for those of us who don't have an interest in voice commands/kinect. As it stands, voice commands/motion sensing on Kinect 1.0 is shitty at best, and I'm not overly confident that will change drastically. Plus all those privacy concerns.

Kinect 2 is vastly improved. I realize you don't research much on these things but you probably should regarding the version of kinect being released with the Xbox One.

I'm not sure you're entirely following the conversation how it was intened. Funks reply was directly in response to the comment:

So.. Good luck using voice control if you have Kinect off or disconnected.
