I would imagine so as it's not a Sony service. You just need to be logged into PSN first.

I read that on several forums. You would just have to restart it 4-5 times. Once it was running though, it was fine.

Netflix hasn't stopped working on the psn. I've used it every day. Hence why I've been completely unconcerned with psn being down.

JAPANESE GIANT Sony's saga of embarrassment over the hacking of its Playstation Network continues, with Japan refusing to let it switch the network back on until the company sorts it out.

Dow Jones Newswire quoted a Japanese regulatory official, revealing that Sony still hasn't come forward to say it has completed the security measures it promised at the beginning of May. Sony was also asked to come up with something to convince people that it will be safe to use the network now and in the future, and it hasn't done this either.

The Japanese must be a little more strict with Sony than countries in other regions that have already let it start switching the network back on again, such as the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Middle East.

Last month saw the start of the debacle when a severe security breach of the Playstation Network and Qriocity services compromised the confidential financial information of as many as 77 million users, including names, passwords and possibly credit card information.

Around a week later Sony admitted that 25 million more users with Sony Online Entertainment accounts might have had their information stolen. As if that wasn't bad enough, it doesn't account for the inconvenience and anger of Playstation gamers around the world who were prevented from using the gaming network until now.

The fact that Sony hasn't done what its home country clearly asked it to do shows that even if the firm is learning some lessons from this whole wretched incident, it's learning far too slowly.

Sony doesn't really have anything to worry about on their home turf anyways. Looking at the Media Create weekly numbers hasn't shown any type of shift to the Xbox there at all. Sony can probably afford to delay the launch by a week or two there to appease regulators.

Now that some PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been restored and you’re once again enjoying online gaming and entertainment, we’re happy to provide details about the “Welcome Back” appreciation program for customers in North America. We developed the program as an expression of our gratitude for your patience, support and continued loyalty during the service outage. From all of us at PlayStation, thank you and welcome back!

This package will be made available to all existing registered PlayStation Network and Qriocity users in North America (US and Canada), and will be made available shortly after we have fully restored the service. More specific details about these offers and eligibility requirements will be posted as the services go live.

All PlayStation Network customers can select two PS3 games from the following list. The games will be available for 30 days shortly after PlayStation Store is restored and can be kept forever.

Dead Nation
inFAMOUS
LittleBigPlanet
Super Stardust HD
Wipeout HD + Fury

For PSP owners, you will be eligible to download two PSP games from the following list. The games will be available for 30 days shortly after PlayStation Store is restored and can be kept forever.

LittleBigPlanet (PSP)
ModNation Racers
Pursuit Force
Killzone Liberation

A selection of “On Us” rental movie titles will be available to PlayStation Network customers over one weekend, where Video Service is available. Those titles will be announced soon.
30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non PlayStation Plus subscribers.
Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive an additional 60 days of free subscription.
Existing Music Unlimited Premium Trial subscription members will receive an additional 30 days of free premium subscription.
Additional 30 days + time lost for existing members of Music Unlimited Premium/Basic subscription free of charge for existing Premium/Basic members.
To welcome users Home, PlayStation Home will be offering 100 free virtual items. Additional free content will be released soon, including the next addition to the Home Mansion personal space, and Ooblag’s Alien Casino, an exclusive game.

We’d like to thank all of our publishing and development partners who’ve contributed to the Welcome Back program, including Bigbig Studios, Codeglue, Digital Leisure, Guerilla Games, Heavy Water, Housemarque, Lockwood, Loot, Mass Media, Media Molecule, SCE Cambridge Studios, SCE Studio Liverpool, SCE San Diego Studios, and Sucker Punch Productions. We couldn’t have created such a compelling package without them!

As a reminder, you will be able to access the above content shortly after services are fully restored. We are doing everything we can to make that happen as soon as possible. Please visit the following sites for more information about the Welcome Back program in Europe and Latin America.

Thank you again for your support!
My personal information was stolen (in large part due to Sony's crappy security) and all I get are games I already own or have finished. Thanks Sony!

I own all the PS3 titles being offered as well. Oh well, I'm not losing sleep over it. I don't really use PSN anyway, so there's not burning desire for real compensation or treats to lure me back.

As long as I don't have to enter a credit card number for "verification" I'll be getting LBP and inFAMOUS. They'll be games number 2 and 3 that I play on my ps3, ever.

Aaaaand the password reset web pages is exploited to reset passwords of target accounts..
http://www.kotaku.com/5803050/sony-play ... ompromised

The kicker, the hacker only needed the e-mail address and the date of birth of the target, all freely available information from the originl hack.. From the instructions Kotaku found, I suspect that the hacker requires to have the e-mail of the target compromised but I'm not 100% sure.

At the moment, only the web-based login pages are down for Playstation/Qriocity sites. Sign-in on PS3/PSP's are still up. I have no idea if password resets from the devices themselves are offline.

According to Sony's PlayStation blog, "Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed."
I know they are sensitive at the moment but I'd still classify it as a 'hack' even if nobody got access to any of the servers or customer information. But if it makes them feel better 'exploit' it is!

Sony also reported a 3.2 Billion dollar loss today, it's third year in a row in the red. For some perspective, MS made 6.3 Billion and Apple made 6 Billion.

Microsoft saw its quarterly operating profits fall by 4% even while revenues grew by 5% to $19.9bn, boosted by huge sales of its Xbox games console and Kinect controller. Net profit fell slightly to $6.63bn, from $6.66bn
Open mouth, insert foot Miir.

Also, the worst part is that no, the PSN hack is not reflected in those losses. That will be felt in the next quarter. I guess you could blame the tsunami, but that happened the last 3 weeks of the quarter.

You are always wrong. The only question is by how much.

Can't find a 6.3 billion figure related to profits so you had to dig back 6 months to find something close?

Except that the 3.2 billion writedown wasn't quarterly, it was for the past year.

Jesus dude. You're even more reactionary and poorly thought out than usual, and that's saying a lot.

First and foremost, yes, Sony's loss of 3.2 Billion is for the year. I never said it wasn't. The Apple and MS figures are there to show how they keep making profit in the billions every quarter (as you yourself pointed out) while Sony is busy losing money in the billions for the year. This is a fact. You get all fanboi retarded if you want, but you're just yelling at numbers. I don't know what to tell you. Sony is hurting. They have massive competition in the home electronics department, they're getting annihilated in the portable division, and PS3 isn't anywhere near the success of the PS2.

I posted on topic. I'm not trying to prove anything to you. I'm just posting information anyone can find by a simple Google search, but most people that even remotely follow this type of thing already know the score. Hell my very first figure of 6.3 billion was from a Google search of "MS profit 2011" and I grabbed the first article. The latest quarter ending March 31st shows a profit of 5.2 billion. It doesn't change the comparison I was making that Sony is hurting right now.

Talking to you about anything Sony is just exhausting.

EDIT: I don't even know what the hell you are referring to with the achievements thing. It's somehow extra funny because you were just so sure about yourself with that information, lol!

I liked the tagline the hackers used:

So nothing to do with PSN.

In other news, Honda was hacked and the personal information of 300k Honda owners was compromised.
US government email accounts were hacked this week.
I'm sure lots of other stuff was hacked as well.

I'm not sure how that's really relevant. There were thousands of governments/companies hacked over the past 40 years prior to them losing information on 100+ million accounts.

Its more of a comment on the rabid fanboy'ism here, that its a free for all Sony bash, Xbox is better thing, its ridiculous :) But considering the bunch of attacks on game companies the last month its getting tiresome.

And yes, I agree that Sony should have come out and said it right away, but i just find it funny how a hack on a GAME platform get boatloads of media time, and make everyone bitch, while the media almost ignore IMPORTANT security problems.

Just look at the RSA Token hack. They have now, AFTER RSA directly said the breech could not be used in attacks caused Lockheed-Martin to get attacked, offered to replace the 40 million (yes, 40 million) RSA tokens out here.
Hopefully this will put the fanboy bashing a little in perspective: http://arstechnica.com/security/news/20 ... omised.ars

Re: PSN is down.. Could be 2 days till full service is restored

I just signed up and here's what the plan includes
* Internet Surveillance - We work with law enforcement to scour the Internet looking for compromised personal information and criminal activity, and if your information is found, we'll alert you to help prevent loss.
* ID Attack Reporting - Over 600 major US companies and government agencies report and share identity theft attack information with us. If your identity is discovered, we will alert you and suggest actions to take.
* Actionable Alerts by Phone With Secure Voice Key - If evidence of your identity is found online, you'll receive a secure call so you can take immediate action.
* Direct Connection to OnCall Investigator - If you suspect fraud, you will be connected to a licensed OnCall Investigator who will launch a thorough inquiry.
* Complete Identity Repair – Priority Service - If your identity is ever stolen, our OnCall investigators will work to fully repair and restore it – saving you time and money.
* $1,000,000 ID Theft Insurance - You're covered for certain fees, lost wages and fraud losses related to recovering your identity.
Wouldn't it be ironic if Debix was hacked and everyone who signs up gets their info compromised!

one plus to the SoE "make right" deal that I have taken advantage of has been SWG. Playing my old characters has been virtually impossible, but starting new players to follow the Legacy Quests that were added has been fun. Almost out of free time on the game though!

I check the box that says something like "skip tutorial." It lands you on Tatooine at level 5, and you quest from there.

heh, nice timing on the email I just received:
Dear Star Wars Galaxies™ Community Member,

We write to you today to inform you that on December 15, 2011, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and LucasArts will end all services (MMO and Trading Card Game) for Star Wars Galaxies (SWG). The shutdown of SWG is a very difficult decision, but SOE and LucasArts have mutually agreed that the end of 2011 is the appropriate time to end the game.

We are extremely grateful to all of the SWG fans. We have had the rare opportunity to host one of the most dedicated and passionate online gaming communities and we truly appreciate the support we've received from each and every one of you over the course of the past eight years.

In recognition of your incredible loyalty, we are extending special Fan Appreciation offers to the current SWG community. We also plan to go out with a bang with a galaxy-ending in-game event in December and hope to see you all there. The details relating to these offers and events as well as the timeline and specifics regarding the discontinuation of the service, are provided below.

Again, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our player community for making SWG one of the best online communities in gaming history.

Sincerely,
Sony Online Entertainment & LucasArts

I'm not sure how "mutual" the agreement was. I'm sure it was basically LucasArts saying 'shut it down' and SOE responding with: "Awww do we have to? Ok."
