Dead Island

Post by Winnow »

Why no talk of this game?

Looks like the best Zombie game yet:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZqrG1bdGtg

Watch it in 720p if you can. Seems to have a story to it. Would be nice to have game where you have a little attachment to the main characters.

After you watch that trailer, watch this one which reveres the reverse:

Considering it's been in development for how many years now? I think it goes back as far as 2006. Not holding my breath, but it'd be nice to be proven wrong.

As for the trailer, really well edited. The non-zombie character models looked pretty Poser-ish.

Oh, I've had my eye on this since it's announcement. Youtube also has some dmg modeling clips from several years ago. It dropped off most people's radar, but I've been looking into it quit often. Great trailer, but gameplay is still a mystery. Based upon screenshots and concept art, I'm hoping for a free roam zombie game in the vein of Just Cause 2.

This is climbing highly on my must buy list. I tend to like free roam games and killing zombies in free roam is a huge bonus.

It's been in development but they've show its progress over the years. The graphics have been updates, etc.

The reason I would try this is if there's some sort of attachment and big time character buildup. I really don't care about another zombie shooter unless it makes you care about the characters to make the player a little more vested in what happens to them.

Fucking fantastic trailer. This could be very damn good. Or, it can just be another ho hum shooter. I'd settle for the middle but hope for something badass and unique.

EDIT: Also, Disgaea 3, which will be here Thursday :P Hey, it was 20$!

Now critic reviews are starting to roll in from around the world. It seems to be scoring around the 8-8.5 out of 10 range from everything I've read and seen translated. The one common complaint is that the PS3 version has terrible screen tearing issues. Maybe they can patch that out later though? By all accounts I think it will be a very solid game.

Dead Island has a 75 rating for the 360 and there aren't enough reviews yet for the PS3 to get a rating. The tearing issue doesn't effect that 75 rating as each platform has separate reviews.

On the brighter side for the game. It should sell well. This game can't be pirated on PS3 or 360 (except for the few people with JTAG) which hasn't happened in awhile for a game.

PS3 version is sitting at 73 on Metacritic.

Totally SHOCKED that both versions are reviewing pretty much the same.. because you know tearing and framerate are of the utmost importance to video game players. This is evidenced by the overwhelming success of games on the PC platform.

A lot of people consider a rating under 80 to be 'bad'.

I like to make my own judgement on games and only use aggregate sites like Metacritic to avoid the obvious stinkers.

The European reviews I read were all higher scores than that. There are only 3 reviews so far on Metacritic for the 360 (a 90, 85, and a 70 throwing off the score). Also of note is that particular reviewer's average game score is only 65, so they must've liked Dead Island more than most games! It's also the #1 preorder on Steam atm. I don't see the ability to steal it for Xbox as a game changer either way. The game will have probably a Borderlands type of success. I think word of mouth will push it further than expected, but that's hard to say due to the fall rush of games raining down upon us all.

(Found more review scores! Some German or Austrian site gave it 10/10 but I don't know where I read that at to quote it)

TeamXbox : 9/10
Games.ch : 89%
Gameswelt.de : 86%
Gametrailers : 8.5
GameInformer : 8.5
OPM Italy : 8.5/10
X360A : 84%
IGN : 8.0
wegotthiscovered : 4/5
Maniac : 70%
Destructoid : 7/10
Joystiq : 3/5
Eurogamer : 6/10

Here's a nice snip from TeamXbox:
Some of you might play the game and wonder why I gave it a 9/10. You might look at the faults that I’ve outlined and declare “that list is worth more than a one point deduction!” However, look at it like this. I don’t believe in a system where you have to deduct certain percentages of points per hang-up or fault you find in a game. For me it’s the overall experience while playing through that determines the final score. Yes, there were faults that I discovered throughout my experience with the game. However, every game has faults, and I viewed this through the lens of a gamer. Did I enjoy this game? Absolutely. Did it scare the crap out of me at times? 100%. Was there a real feeling of survival horror (as opposed to just jumping-scares) that has been sadly lacking from other contemporary zombie games? You bet. So looking at the total package that was brought to the table here, this game is too fun to play and too unique an experience to be really nit-picky on the things that didn’t go exactly as I’d rather them go. As I write these final thoughts, there is only one review out there on the web, and if the rest of the press agrees with that reviewer’s thoughts, my review will likely be one of the higher-scoring ones out there. That’s fine though; I truly stand behind this score. Hopefully you will pick this game up and experience one of the most engaging experiences I’ve had with my 360 in quite some time. This is a game that needs to be in a gamer’s collection, so try to make it happen if you can, guys.
Lots of walk throughs and game play on Youtube too. If anyone has an interest in the game, check it out. I'm just going to wait to play the game. I'm avoiding all that stuff.

Here is Day 1 patch notes:
Fixed map synchronization when player joins during map load.
Fixed saving player re-spawn position when playing in co-op mode.
Fixed occasional inability to complete sidequests in Laboratory.
Improved enemy awareness (zombies).
Fixed occasional bug with NPC's hands bend (IK)
Fixed spawning enemies in some quests after joining co-op game.
Fixed showing locations on invisible NPCs.
Fixed potential path blocker when quest "Knockin' on heaven's door" was completed before talking to Dominik during the "On the air" quest.
Fixed displaying gather rings near some doors.
Fixed enemy reaction to fire.
Fixed enemies' health and stamina bars in co-op.
Fixed filtering of games in lobby.
Volume of pickup's engine has been increased.
Fixed a number of issues causing game instability.
Fixed the switching of maps upon player death.
Fixed enemies unable to reach the player on some arenas.
Thrown items cannot be picked up by co-op players for five minutes.
Items from freshly opened containers cannot be picked up by other players for five seconds to prevent theft.
Fixed animation glitch when trading with team members.
More than one player can use a ladder at the same time.
Fixed stomping execution animation when target's attacked by a second player.
Fixed the infinite respawning of shooting enemies.
Fixed not hiding menu if players die inside a vehicle.
Fixed item level calculation when playing New Game Plus.
Added information about players requesting pause in co-op.
Fixed A.I. animation glitch after fast-traveling or using a map portal.
Added distinction between quest checkpoints and other types of saves.
Fixed bug causing all inventory to disappear.
Fixed reloading and kicking. After the clip goes in, the reload is a success.
Purna can gain bonus rage from both "Grim Inspiration" and "Inspiring Kick".
Only "Walker" type enemies increase the extra XP of the "Combo" skill from Xian's Survival skill tree.
Health regeneration is disabled during grabs.
Focus on items in shops not changing after selling or buying.
More HP for NPCs in escort missions.
Butcher enemies won't spawn at all during escort missions (hooray!)
Fixed tracking after loading checkpoint.
Increased minimum vertical distance to count a waypoint as passed for NPCs (they no longer wander back-and-forth).
Player reviews have really been the high point to read. Lots to do in this game it seems!
After playing an hour or so...

I chose single player and it prompts you if you are "near" another player if you want join them. Something similar to Demon Souls-ish?

Also, combat is solid. Kind of a mix between fallout/oblivion meets condemned but with better weight to hits. It's kind of "fast" paced but still satisfying.

Graphics are nothing short of amazing except the faces are "kind" of weird. Like something way better than Oblivion/Fallout 3 but not as good as Skyrim.

Nice skill trees. Have three to choose from with mix and match.

Have not tried co-op yet but during the load screens, it mentioned that the game autosaves whenever a player quits or when the co-op session is over.

Quests are trackable.

There are achievements and challenges. The challenges are similar to Borderlands / Fallout: NV, like kill x amount of zombies with a bladed weapon etc....

Also, seem to spend a lot of time looting suitcases and backpacks for some reason.
Also, if you are in a car, zombies will swarm you and try to drag you out of the vehicle! Sounds great to me!

LOL, how the hell does a 70 'throw off' the score?
There's 16 reviews up now on Metacritic ranging from 90-60... 70 is the median score.

The PC version is experiencing some serious launch day jitters. Several hotfixes have been done and there is suppossed to be a mega patch sometime before Friday that may invalidate saves. These problems are PC only because Steam and even boxed retail copies are actually dev versions of the game. Oops!

I already have a few xbl friends playing this and I'm jealous. My copy arrived after I left for work :(. The great news is that I'm looking at getting a fucking sweet new TV this weekend, just in time for the release of all these great games!

Been playing for a while now. I picked the assassin.

Controls are a bit clunky and take some getting used to, but I'm starting to get used to it. There are definitely texture popping issues, but they aren't terrible. It can definitely be frustrating constantly having weapons degrade and break, but I guess that will get better later on, and it's intentional to create that sense of despair.

I like it so far, I think I'm going to stick with this class but I'm not sure. Looking forward to co-op. Just got to chapter 2.

Like DX - An amazing game, fucked over on the PC once again. If you want it to be a console game, make me buy it on the console, don't half ass it on the PC and still charge me the same rates.

L4D meets GTA is best way to sum it up. Good missions, good story (so far, played 4 hours last night and it says im like...9% of the way through or something).

As Fair pointed out, it's been a disaster on the PC - wrong version + weird debug shit left in + with the quick fix, they fucked your saves, and there's 'rumors' that the next big one will invalidate saves yet again.

Still going to play some more when I get home, however if there's another save bug, i'll probably shelf it for a month+ while playing all the other cool shit that's coming out and/or play more DX to get some of the final achievements.

It does look very good, except weird shiny hair - and I don't think I've seen a single character that looks less than 45 in the face. Then again, this may be one of those hedonism islands where old people go to get their fuck on.
Pyrella - Illusionist - Leader of Ixtlan on Antonia Bayle

if you were walking around and you came upon a tulip with tits, would you let it be for the rest of the world to enjoy.. or would you pick it and carry it off to a secluded area to motorboat them?

Just popped it in and about to do first mission, aside from the paddle thing. Nice shadows! Going to have to get used to controls, but it looks like a bit of fun! Nice creepy vibe so far. Picked the Asian gal, because I didn't want to feel guilty about looting luggage with the black guy... :)

This is how much I played as well. I chose the black guy because I heard there was a pretty severe lack of guns, so blunt weapons seemed like an a good way to go (plus Funk went with the chick!). I chose the middle skill tree to go with the guy. Also, he says "motherfucker" all the goddamn time, even just thinking out loud like "Nice motherfuckin' sunset". The game is great so far. It doesn't have "disposable zombies" like Dead Rising (yet). It has a great setting. There is a bit of jank in the controls and movement, but I kind of like it in a weird way. It has a different feel than an EA or Activision type of game and it's a nice change.

I would say it's a cross between Fallout 3 and Dead Rising with Borderlands sprinkled here and there. I'll put more time into it today before work.
