Tom Bombadil: overrated or underrated?

Post by Leonaerd »

I have heard so much freaking debate over the years about the singing and dancing fool that I feel a poll is appropriate.

On one hand, he is clearly a memorable character in the books. On the other hand, fakers that haven't really read the LotR books like to claim that he's the shizzit, lowering poor Tom's street cred.

I think he's a fantastic character in a fantastic book, making him seem even more fantastic. No amount of ignant jerks could ever make me lose respect for such a master of tale and song!

And anybody that says he was an uninteresting character should die thz.

I guarantee half the people who play LOTRO on release never read the books, at least half in fact. Considering he wasn't a big character in the movies (I believe he's only mentioned?), your claims are blasphemous.

I don't think he's mentioned in the movies.

I heard an argument once that Tom Bombadil is a Valar; specifically, Aule, who created the dwarves. It was a 20 or 30 page thesis type document based on research in Tolkien's writings. The thing is, Tolkien never came out and said exactly who Bombadil was; thus all the speculation about his true nature. He's certainly not a regular man, or Edain; those die within a century. He's not an Elf, Dwarf, Hobbit, Ent, or any other race known to Middle Earth. So what is he?
I've heard so many answers to the question, but I'm in the camp that he is one of the Valar visiting Middle Earth and keeping an eye on it.

Rick Deckard, the character that Harrison Ford played in Blade Runner, was actually a replicant himself. Yeah. Think about it.

I just blew your fucking mind.

after reading the lotr trilogy for the first time he became one of my favorite characters.. anyone who can see through the rings magic is both overpowered and underrated.. maybe you can recruit tom to take down the witch-king in lotro.. :D
- It seems some people like to hide behind the first amendment.
- Probably because there being shot at by the people who are hiding behind the second.

The story of Tom Bombadil is smothered in secret sauce!
J.R.R. Tolkien wrote:'And even in a mythical Age there must be some enigmas, as there always are. Tom Bombadil is one (intentionally).'
