Wow and Windows 7 install

Post by Bubba Grizz »

I'm going to be upgrading to Windows 7 and I was wondering what I need to do to prepare for reinstalling Wow. I am currently on Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Is it as easy as just copying the folders to an external drive and copying them back? I still have the original disks but would like to avoid a long drawn out process of downloading.

The install directory for WOW (and most MMOs) is completely portable.
No need to reinstall.

That. I copied my WoW directory over to my 2nd hd, formatted/installed Windows 7, and copied it back. Worked just fine! I *did* have some trouble with permissions and vent working in WoW, I just had to make sure to set a password for my account.

Correct. If you do reinstall on windows 7, it will move the directory to C:\users\public\games\world of warcraft, but is otherwise the same.

I got a new machine about the same time as Win7. Copied my wow folder over, put a shortcut to wow.exe on my desktop. Finished.

Yuppers. Thanks folks. I just moved the folder and put the shortcut on the desktop and all works fine. I can't say the same for my Steel Series WoW Mouse. My mouse keeps switching to HID Compliant instead of the WoW mouse that it is. I tried doing the compatibility mode as Vista with SP2 to install it and it worked for a night and then it stopped the next day.

I'm guessing that I will have to wait for better drivers.

Discovered my first snag. When trying to do the updates it couldn't find my WoW.exe file. I checked and found that it was looking for the game in a whole other directory. I'm not at my home computer right now so this path may not be totally accruate; public\user\documents\blizzard entertainment\world of warcraft. I created the needed folders so it matched and all is working fine now.
