iPad/iPhone Apps

Post by Winnow »

Because the old thread title was before iPad was even named the iPad!

I'll start the thread off with a couple app recommendations. (not ranked or categorized) BTW, the itunes links are to web browser info. They don't open up iTunes.

Image

Atomic Web Browser: Excellent Safari browser replacement, adding Tabbed browsing, Full Screen Browsing, Ad Blocking, etc etc etc.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/atomic-w ... 29410?mt=8

Image

Air Video: Outstanding video streaming app. Watch all of your videos (no matter what format)
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-vide ... 50020?mt=8

Image

Netflix: must have if you use the Netflix service
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/netflix/id363590051?mt=8

Image

AppAdvice: Active, well designed news/reviews app for iPad and iPhone apps. This is actually better on iPhone but update/redesign coming for iPad version

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/appadvic ... 06378?mt=8

Image

Newsy: Great video news app. Videos load extremely fast. News stories taken from multiple sources with multiple News anchors summarizing the stories for you. Includes great UI with transcrips for the stores, links to sources, etc. Free, definitely worth checking out.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/newsy-fo ... 18944?mt=8

Image

IMDB

Simply badass on both iPhone and iPad. Excellent UI design. Takes full advantage of iOS. Great on iPhone. Excellent on iPad.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imdb-mov ... 92525?mt=8

Image

Cut the Rope

Angry Birds is fun but I found this more entertaining. I like them both.

http://www.fuq.com for all your streaming porn needs. It's free, but quality is fair at best on the ipad. Looks great on iphone though!

For anyone with a jailbroken iPad, here's a short video showing how easy it is to install apps with Installous:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWON8E-5kiA

It's actually a nicer UI layout than Apple's own iTunes.

Lets you browse by Catagory, Popularity, etc.

Image

Image
It even checks your (jailbroken) apps for updates (finds updated jailbroken versions)

Great for testing purposes!

News today is that Cydia is already planned for the new Mac App store that is being released next week so for those that like the Apps on their iPhones and iPads, you'll be able to test them out on your Mac when that goes live.

For those that like to download via PC and then copy to iTunes there's always Apptrackr:

http://apptrackr.org/

I tend to use that if it's a large download.

For games, I play:

Pocket Legends
Plants Vs Zombies
Angry Birds
God Finger
Aurora Feint 3
Wesnoth
Strategery
Osmos HD

I have plenty of others, but those are all AAA games IMO and put the iPad format to it's best use. Oh yeah, my wife and I play Best of the Best on occasion too. It's like the card game "War" combined with Blackjack. It's a fun way to waste time.

My iPad gets tons of use. I use it at work to play music (with headhomes and without) and I stream Netflix while I code. My iPhone works in a pinch, but I enjoy the bigger screen and louder speakers when I don't have to use headphones. At home, it's what I surf on. As a matter of fact, when I set up for my Cataclysm week, my laptop was used entorely for playing movies (because it has a dvd player!) and my ipad was used for surfing, quest info, and guild board posting. I could yap about how great the device is all damn day.

OMG, my first YouTube video.

I tried out a screen recording app from Cydia called "Display Recorder". I wanted to see how easy it would be to record my iPad/iPhone screen for demos etc. Turns out pretty damn easy. I was trying not to use YouTube but it's so easy for streaming compared to doing it myself.

Anyway, I recorded the 2Do app which is a very nice looking app. The cassette recorder for recording audio is a great touch!

Anyway, the movie is bad. Literally first thing I recorded just to yest quality, etc. Shame we can't embed Youtube vids still even in this high bandwidth day and age!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYxamUjt9s8

I find annotations highly annoying in YouTube videos so I added one!

For not having ever used YouTube before I'll make a few comments:

-hella easy (wicked for you east coast peeps)
-didn't ask me what res I wanted my video in, added 360, 480 and 720 automatically.
-I made it "unlisted" meaning if you have the link you can view it but it's not search-able

More importantly, the iphone/ipad recording app works great! I like how you can have the screen taps show up, even the pinch/zoom etc.

Last Display Recorder test.

I made a demo of Atomic Browser. I recommend using this browser over Safari for iPhone and iPad.

I'm impressed with the YouTube quality if you play it in full screen 720 res.

I wasn't that impressed with it... It looks really, really good (about as good as a PSP game) and the control scheme works fairly well.
It's nowhere near as bad Chaos Rings but it was just not very much fun to me.

Infinity Blade is good and visually impressive but I'd recommend recently release Eternal Legacy if you want a Final Fantasy (pre crappy FFXIII) type game.

Very nice with lots of voice acting:

Eternal Legacy

Image
Description

Enter a huge world made of cinematic environments in this intense role-playing game, worthy heir on your iPhone and iPod touch of its Japanese predecessors.

ENTER THE WORLD OF ALGOAD
- An absorbing scenario implying heavy responsibilities: Astrian, you must save Algoad from destruction and restore the living bond between humans and nature.
- A mix of fantasy and sci-fi: fight with swords and guns, face robots and magic, and fly your own ship!
- Freely explore majestic regions: real-time rendered in full 3D, with free 360° camera.

A SMOOTH, THRILLING BATTLE SYSTEM
- Dynamic turn-based fights: preset your future attacks, which will be triggered one by one once your action gauge is filled.
- Epic combats, enhanced by full 3D artwork, numerous animations and a varied bestiary.
- Up to 3 characters will fight at the same time: select your team among your recruits and define your teammates' behavior.

LIVE YOUR OWN ABSORBING ADVENTURE
- Choose your own path by interacting with the environment, items, people and enemies, or solving puzzles to make your way through obstacles.
- Talk to the people you meet, featuring full voice acting: they may join your team, reveal some secret, give you a quest, and more.
- Perform sub-quests if you like, to extend the game’s lifespan and gain more experience.
- Customize your character and weapons: you master your destiny.
Impressive stuff coming out on iPhone/iPad

I played this one a bit and enjoy the game.

Dungeon Hunter II is also a very good Diablo style game just released on iPhone:

That's how I felt the first few times through. Then it got old.

Quick summary..
You go from point A to point B fighting 7 or so enemies along the way until you get to the boss at point B. He's level 50, so you die. Then you start a new guy at point A again and do the exact same thing along the exact same path.
You gain ~4 levels per cycle, and keep the stuff you find/buy along the way each time, so figure you'll probably do the same thing at least 11+ times before you've got a chance at beating the boss guy.
The bad guys are harder each run through, but in the 4 or 5 runs I've done so far the difficulty and minor enemy appearance changes are the only difference.

Great to pick up every so often to pass some time.. but doesn't compare to a full out game. It does show the graphics and play potential though.

That really is amazing tech. Everyone should watch that video.

I tried the demo on my iPhone and it works on just about anything. The demo reverses the text. 4.99 per language. Only Spanish to English, English to Spanish available atm. If they make one that does Japanese, I'm all over it.

Check out the vid. So cool. <3 iPhone (although this will eventually come out for Android as well I'm sure...after Android wises up and secures their App store a little more so some real apps actually become available for it)

Couple Apple related notes.
In a somewhat disturbing press release from Apple, Steve Jobs has announced that the company's Board of Directors approved his request for a medical leave of absence. He will keep his title of Chief Executive Officer, though Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook - who ran Apple during Jobs's last medical leave in 2009 - will again take the reins of the company.

Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004. This form of cancer is extremely deadly, and 95% of those diagnosed with this disease die within five years. Jobs initially refused normal medical treatment, instead relying on a special diet to cure him of the disease. Eventually, Jobs underwent a surgical procedure to remove the head of his pancreas, his duodenum, part of his stomach, the gall bladder and other organs. Though Jobs has generally refused to discuss his health issues publicly, the tumor was believed to have been removed through this procedure. However, his thin, gaunt appearance in subsequent years, as well as a six month leave of absence in 2009 during which he had a liver transplant, has led to persistent concerns about his health. Bloomberg inadvertently published a draft of a Steve Jobs obituary in 2008; Jobs later joked about the worries during an iPod event, quoting Mark Twain that "the reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."

During an address to the graduating class of Stanford in 2005, Steve ruminated on the lessons he had learned from his illness. He told the graduates that "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma... which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."

The Apple press release consisted only of Jobs's email to all Apple employees, which reads:
Team,

At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple's day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.

I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

Steve
With all the medical procedures done on Steve Jobs, I think he's finally gone for good as Active CEO and Keynote speech giver. For most of my PC life, I've taken an anti Jobs stance but it's been remarkable to see his perseverance through the years. It's been an amazing ride watching Apple from the time Microsoft bought part of the company, with Apple in dire straits to now, where Apple's market cap surpassed Microsoft's last year.

You Can Now File Your Taxes Via iPhone

In case you missed the biggest news in the world of electronic tax filing, Intuit has announced the iOS arrival of its hugely popular tax software TurboTax, making it possible to complete and file your federal and state income tax return for 2010 via iPhone. If you plan to e-file - and have remarkably simple tax needs - this free app dubbed SnapTax may be for you.

"SnapTax offers an entirely new and unique way to file taxes," said Barry Saik, vice president of product management for TurboTax. "Now, millions of taxpayers across the country can do their taxes easily and accurately from their mobile phones in just minutes." According to Saik and the promotional material available about SnapTax, the mobile app is fairly straightforward. The filing process begins by photographing your W-2 form(s) from the iPhone or an Android-powered smartphone. The app then "extracts the data" via optical character recognition technology. Pretty nifty, indeed.

In minutes you can complete and review your completed tax return. If there are no problems, you can e-file directly from your phone. But there are several catches to the process, not the least of which are the simplistic requirements of your tax needs. For instance, your reported income can only be logged from W-2, interest or unemployment forms. Also, if you earned more than $80,000 (single) or $100,000 (married) in 2010, the app is not for you.

Although the app is "free" and available now for download http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/turbotax ... 64213?mt=8 there's a $14.99 charge to e-file your returns from the iPhone.

Image Image
This, of course, is for basic tax filing (1040-EZ) but it's cool to see the use of camera/optical character recognition to make filing even easier

--------------------------
So, AppleInsider has some new info on Apple's successor to the A4, which we were talking up last week, and our sources say it's spot on. Specifically, AI claims that Apple is moving to dual-core SGX543 graphics, up from the A4's single SGX535 GPU (also known as the PowerVR 535). What's particularly great about this move is that the graphical power improvement is rated at around 4X the current generation -- which makes a true 4X resolution iPad "Retina Display" upgrade seem much more of a possibility. We're also starting to see 1080p HDMI video output as a "default" spec in this year's generation of devices, so there's no reason Apple will want to be left out -- particularly in the Apple TV -- and these dual graphics cores could handle that easily. The same cast of A4 characters are to credit for this new A5 generation, including the Apple-owned Intrinsity and PA Semi, while Samsung will again do the production duties. But details aside, we're just excited to play around with all this new horsepower when it hits -- apparently the PSP 2 is rumored to use the same graphics architecture with even more cores. Isn't Moore's law a grand thing?
Gotta like the idea of a processor with 4X the graphics processing power than what the iPhone 4 already has.

For what it is, it's pretty good. It's free for a few weeks, worth checking out to see the interactive stuff it uses.

To load the current day, you need to completely close the app (not leave it in multitasking)

Worth it for free. .99/week not bad but not sure worth it over normal new sources. It's an impressive amount of content though each day.

USAToday (free) app has come a long way and isn't bad for generic news. It's continually updated and improves on it's nice touch UI

Garageband for iPad is badass. It's as cool as it looked during the iPad 2's intro video. So many instruments.

Garageband demo'd if you missed it:

Smart instruments are so cool.

Speedtest.net is a great app to use on both iPad and iPhone to test your connection speeds. Yes, that is actually the name of the app... Hey, at least it's free!

Rage HD for the iPhone/iPad is a fucking awesome game. It's made by id software/Bethesda, and I assume is just basically a mini on rails version of the game that's coming out later this year. It's a FPS game, and you aim by moving the phone around, and there are on screen buttons to shoot, dodge/run and reload. Great graphics and fun responsive controls, definitely recommended!

I don't know how much gaming you guys do on your iDevices, but if it's anywhere near the amount I do, I can see the usefulness a mobile (ios/android/etc) forum would provide.. I spend a lot of time reading reviews/etc about games, even though most of them are really cheap.

I think I've mentioned it before on this forum, but I really don't do much handheld gaming at all. I'm usually either at home or at work. At home, I have my consoles and PC, and while at work I have to actually work with my hands on a keyboard the entire time, so my iPad is used for movies and music only. Now, I'll play a little something now and again, but it's almost always in short bursts. The iPhone/iPad is perfect for me in that regard (and so are the prices!). I have FF1 for iPhone and refuse to purchse 2 until I beat it. Secret of Mana has gotten rave reviews, but I just don't see myself putting in the time to justify buying it. Well, until those .99 sales start up again, then I'll blow 10$ on 10 games that tickle my fancy. I guess I've always just thought of the ability for the iPad to play games as a great addition to what I primarily use the device for. It was not a major reason for me to buy one. Well, neither was the ability to use it as an ereader, but holy this thing is worth it just for that if you read comics.

I have also put every 40k codex, warhammer army book, and all the rules/supplements for each game on my iPad. It's fucking amazing for me to be able to do that. The other day I was at the local hobby store looking at all the D&D stuff. I went home and checked Newsleecher, and sure enough, every single 4th edition book has a high Rez scan out there. So, I grabbed them all! We're talking around 100 books, supplements, and scenarios. Crazy to have all of that accessible on my iPad anytime I want it. Btw, D&D nerds are better organized and consistent than warhammer nerds.

Oh yeah, I also have video game strategy guides on my iPad too. Very convenient.

I use PDFreader for my PDFs. It was on sale last week for .99. Great app!

Yeah...i think i unlocked all the types, i got no clue how much money i would have had if i had saved that cash instead :)

Basically to unlock types, get someone to level 5 in a class, then do all the trainings twice, then change to next class. The game remembers them between plays i THINK, so you next time only need to get a level 5 writer to unlock all those types, dont need to train him too.

And to get the potato chips chip, you need 4 hardware engineers, to get the punch card, you need 6 hardware engineers....i had to chance a few hackers back to being hardware engineers, just to make it, then back to hackers again :)

I just wish they would consider making sales global....i was laughing my butt off over EA's "St. Patricks Day" sale, which were NOT available in Europe. I could have sworn that St. Patricks Day was an irish holiday, that the US adopted :)

http://zombiesrungame.com

I've now used this a few times while doing runs and the more I use it, the more entertaining it becomes.

Basically, you start your run and start the app. As time goes by you'll hear transmissions from a base giving you story background, zombie spotting, etc. As you go along, you'll automatically pick up stuff and get different transmissions from the base. The items you pick up are used to build up the base. Aside from the entertainment factor I don't know how far you can get it built up or what happens at higher levels as it's a fairly new app.

For the $3.99 it costs (272 megs of iPhone space) it's entertaining. It does GPS tracking, speed, elevation, pace, music, etc. Works very well on treadmill for those days you can't get outside (uses the iPhone accelerometer).

If you're looking for a fun way to get back into running around, I highly recommend it. And I don't normally even like zombie stuff..

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zombies- ... 19713?mt=8

A good guide to the story, items and such.

Edit: Of useful note, I launch this on my iPhone and then put it in the background so I can track my run normally with RunMeter Runtastic's app - it works great this way and I get the benefits of mega-data tracking as well as playing the game at the same time.

I'd imagine you could use it anywhere, even sitting at your desk. It would probably go through the missions fine. It just wouldn't be as entertaining. (Though I wouldn't doubt some people do this just to get through them faster and build up their base and such)

I'm a big fan of news aggregator apps.

Zite has always been my favorite for both the iPad and iPhone. Version 2.0 was just released today and it's freaking awesome.

You really should give it a try if you like personalized timely news on your phone or tablet:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zite-pe ... 52338?mt=8

It's amazing on the iPad and I think the best of the big name aggregators on the iPhone as well with the 2.0 release. (Flipboard being it's main competition which is also nice but is a little more flash than substance compared to Zite IMO) The screenshots of it are ok but you really need to see it in action to get a feel for how well put together it is. It also can save your preferences in the cloud so my favorite topics, etc sync on my iphone, ipad (and android although the app is not worth using on Android for now. It's not formatted for tablets and far behind in development)

Download Zite (free), pick a few topics of interest to get started and give it a try. Unfortunately on Android it blows ass so this one's only for iOS for now unless they do a major update.

----

Another recommendation is Pocket. Pocket stores your news/web pages for future reference across multiple platforms so you can read or reference it later

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocket- ... 01447?mt=8

This one works well on iOS and Android as well as PC. Nice interface for both phone and tablet. It doesn't seem like much to begin with but as you get used to it, sending articles, web pages, etc to pocket is easy. Most news apps (like zite, flipboard, etc) support it in their "share" options and there's easy plug-ins for Firefox, etc.

I use it to quickly send articles that require a little more research than a minute ride on an elevator, etc and also for future reference. The cross platform integration is outstanding. With it being cloud based, you have fast and easy access to the articles on whatever device you're on. It also had a built in "reader" app which presents the articles in an easy to read format, free of all the ads and crap. It's something you just need to try for a few weeks to see if you make use of it. I used to emailed myself articles etc, but this is more useful.

----

Zite = Must at least try 10/10, my app of the year

Pocket = extremely handy, multiplatform place to send articles and web pages, etc. Kind of a holding tank with a nice reader and look to it. It works well as a great reminder so you don't forget things of interest as well.

Pulse is the app that I have used for a while on my iPod Touch and my Android Tablet. They have also made news feeds available through a PC, but I don't bother with that too much at home since I have my tablet there. They must have had some funding brought in when it first appeared on one of the Droid X commercials, because they have had some major improvements in the last couple months. The app is totally free on both platforms. I honestly haven't messed with the settings too much, as it met my needs "out-of-the-box."

I've tried pulse as well. A lot of it comes down to preference on how the news is presented to you. Definitely give Zite a try, especially if you have an iPad. It's outstanding. Prismatic is another very good news aggregator but only for the iPhone, no iPad version yet.

Edit: saw you have android tablet. Try Prismatic on your iPod. (or Zite)

I'm a huge fan of Zite (a news aggregator) ofr the iphone/iPad. (last I checked the latest Android version sucked)

I found another news aggregation app that I've been using along with Zite. It's called Rockmelt.

It's available also on the net:

http://rockmelt.com/

It's kinda "pinteresty" but it's assloads of easy access to news.

Best used on tablet, iPad: (ir iPhone)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rockmel ... 85339?mt=8

It's good enough that it shares some of my viewing time with Zite. Competition is good. Need to keep improving the apps!

Three Apps I have provide total multimedia streaming bliss (except for music which I don't care about!)

What I want out of my streaming apps:

-set and forget. setup whatever server you need on your PC and never think about it again.

-easy directory access. use the media folders already setup on your PC to access your files.

-fast and reliable. seamless. open the app, navigate to your media and play it.

The three Apps I use:

Image

Air Video:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-vid ... 50020?mt=8

-plays all types of video files
-creates thumbnails on the fly of your videos (not necessary but helpful when you can't remember what something is)
-remembers where you paused and resumes at the same spot even if you turn off the screen or switch to another app.
-able to boost the audio if needed
-able to search and jump to various points in video quickly

Some of those points may not seem like much but there are plenty of media streaming apps that can't do all of the above.

PhotoStreamr:

Image

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photost ... 41857?mt=8

-view all types of image files
-quickly creates large thumbnail images for directory you select
-able to sort by date or file name
-save viewed image to folders you create on device or to camera roll

Seems simple enough but this is the only app that allows you to stream images to your iPhone/iPad without having to transfer them to the device. I have a million+ images on my hard drives. I will sometimes rip a site that has several hundred thousand images. I then go back through and select ones I'd like the best and save them to categorized folders that are more refined collections of images (no it's not porn. It's artwork. fantasy/Sci Fi/Comic art) With the iPad being such an outstanding device to view images, this app allows me to casually wade through my images and provides a way to organize them while not on my PC.

Image

ComicGlass:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/comicgl ... 92049?mt=8

-fast, full screen viewing of zip, rar, cbr/cbz and pdf files
-stream from PC
-thumbnail navigation
-zoom
-view rar/zip files without needing to first decompress

While Comic Zeal remains the best stand alone App for comics on the iOS platform, it doesn't stream.

This was the last piece to my streaming app collection. No other comic reader streams. I already have my comics organized in folders on my hard drives. With ComicGlass I can point it to the top folder in my comic directory and have access to everything. It's fast. Fast navigation, fast transfers.

Basically comic glass will cache the current comic you're reading on the iOS app and that's the only storage space you need. This is the only streaming app for comics and on top of that, the only one that views all formats .rar .zip .cbr .cbz and .pdf.

-----

With AirVideo, PhotoStreamr and Comicglass, I have instant and easy access to all movies, TV shows, magazines, comics and images on my hard drives. If you have an iOS device, these are worth considering if you have large media collections.
