iPhone is down to 18% marketshare.

Apple has been too busy trying to pressure other companies with obscure patent violation litigation... all the while falling behind on innovation and failing to deliver products that appeal to a wider range of consumers.
It seems like they are just trying to milk the Apple faithful for as much as possible before they fall back into being a minor player in the smartphone/tablet fields.
Lol
Apple posts record $8.2b profit on $36b in revenue for Q4 2012

26.9 million iPhones and 14 million iPads equals a lot of money

By Nilay Patel on October 25, 2012 04:33 pm

Apple's just released its Q4 2012 earnings report, posting an $8.2b profit on $36 billion in revenue, breaking its record Q4 2011 of $6.62b profit on $28.27b in revenue. The gains were almost entirely driven by a 58 percent increase in iPhone sales with 26.9m units sold, up from 17m last year, and a 26 percent increase in iPad sales with 14m sold, up from 11m last year. Mac sales were relatively flat, up just one percent to 4.9m, and the iPod line continued to decline, down 19 percent to 5.3m. The numbers also compare favorably to last quarter, when Apple posted an $8.8b profit on $35b in revenue, selling 26m iPhones, 17m iPads, 4m Macs, and 6.8m iPods.

International sales made up 60 percent of Apple's revenue, following several years of growth. Apple's board also declared a quarterly dividend of $2.65 a share, following a trend started just last quarter after years of investor concerns.

Reaction on Wall Street has been mixed to negative so far, as Apple beat analyst's revenue forecasts but missed the predicted profit numbers, largely on disappointing iPad sales. The stock has dropped four percent in after-hours trading after the results were announced, according to Reuters.

Apple CEO Tim Cook and Peter Oppenheimer will hold a conference call for financial analysts at 5PM ET, which we'll be live blogging right here.
Most loved, therefore most hated. Apple, as a company, dominates the competition. No one comes close to their revenue. At the end of the day, Internet nerds raging over pixel density and legal bullshit is just absurd when you take the amount of money Apple makes into account.

I'll put it in perspective: Apple made makes billions every quarter while Sony loses billions every year. It's insane.

Btw, Vita is selling less than the Dreamcast did at this point in it's life cycle. Just thought I would throw that out there in case anyone had any doubt that the Vita isn't a complete failure.

Let me know when Apple isn't the most profitable company in the known universe with the best product solutions for phones and tablets available.

Until then I'll keep an eye on Android and Microsoft offerings and switch if I feel something is better. Seems pretty simple.

The only thing being owned is your wallet by Apple.

The iBrain is where it's at. The audio gets a bit NSFW. It's worth the 10 minutes, in my opinion...

I've wanted to post that here for ages but I didn't think anyone here would find it funny. I do though!

There was a follow up episode to this on Comedy Bang Bang too!

Jony Ive Reportedly Tinkering with Major iOS Design Changes

In what likely amounts to another example of how Scott Forstall's controversial departure from Apple may actually benefit the tech giant, a new report indicates that famed Apple design guru Jony Ive may now be afforded an opportunity to do some nifty things with iOS and OS X.

The senior vice president of industrial design at Apple has been tapped to fill much of Forstall's abandoned role. And sources speaking with The New York Times this week say that Ive will "waste little time in putting his own stamp on the look of the company’s software, including iOS for mobile devices and OS X for Macs."

“You can be sure that the next generation of iOS and OS X will have Jony’s industrial design aesthetic all over them,” said an unnamed designer who works at Apple. “Clean edges, flat surfaces will likely replace the textures that are all over the place right now.”
Game over! You may as well throw your Androids in the trash.

Surely, this is a big blow for Scott. After Steve Jobs passed on, many articles dubbed him “Mini-Steve” with reports of ruffled feathers between Jonathan Ive and himself at times. Before Jobs died, he reportedly told Tim Cook that no one should interfere with Jonathan Ive and this included Scott Forstall. Jobs also said that his direct report should be Tim Cook and no one else. This is remarkable revelation given Scott came to Apple in 1997 with Steve Jobs under a strong history of support.

So iOS is going to rip off Windows 8 interface this time?

Except it's going to be a lot of brushed metallic silvers and grays and mattle black textures in the OS. And Ive's dream come true, these ones won't scratch or dent.

All kidding aside though. iOS will get a graphical makeover but I don't really expect anything to change drastically. The Apps ecosystem is their crown jewel at this point. Harm that in any way and they actively erode their biggest bulletpoint.

I tried out remote connecting to Windows 8 using my iPad today.

Jump Desktop supports Windows 8 touch features. I think it's available on Android as well.

Using this RDP app in touch mode, it's like I'm using a Microsoft Tablet with Windows 8 in the iPad. It's pretty cool and is the best Remote Desktop experience I've had when using a tablet as the client. For those that Remote connect to your home PC using tablets, Windows 8 may be a little more attractive to you than otherwise.

With Jump Desktop (and eventually many other RDPs and VNC apps), all of the swipes, touches, etc work as if you were using Win 8 on a touch screen. I could stream video over my network but high res choppy and I don't think you can expect that via 3G. Maybe LTE. I'll have to try it later on my phone.

You just don't get it. Many of the models listed in those "lists" are distinctly different from others by the same manufacturer. A lot of the models on the phone list just shows how many separate models are needed to meed the demands of multiple carriers. Apples "upgrades" are not like that most of the time, yet the previous versions are made obsolete by restricting access to things like new versions of the iOS. Apple releases same product with minor improvement for higher cost while "breaking" prior year's model.

That's unfair, they break the model that's 2 gens old. Except for 4S (or whatever it was) and Siri, but that was down to the massive processing power required to "record voice and transmit it to Apple HQ where all the real work was done".

But no one is trollable over any of them and almost no one waits in line at the store to be the first one to pay too much for one or believe they've enhanced their epeen via marginal upgrade :D

Apple seems to be one of the few companies that isn’t afraid to introduce a product that might cannibalize other products it sells. Looking at some past examples, no one buys classic iPods anymore, they buy the iPod Touch or iPhone instead. Another example would be the MacBook Air, which cannibalized sales of regular MacBooks to an extent. The most recent example of this though is the iPad mini, which many consumers and analysts figured would cannibalize sales of the iPad. In actuality, this assumption turned out to be false though.

A new survey conducted by Cowen and Co. shows that while the iPad mini has been selling quite well, it hasn’t cannibalized the regular iPad lineup. Instead it is contributing towards killing PC sales. Cowen and Co. surveyed a total of 1,225 U.S. adults and found that 12% planned to purchase an iPad mini in the next 18 months. Of those 12%, a staggering 52% said they never owned a tablet before. Furthermore, out of those that showed interest in purchasing an iPad mini, only 16.6% said they’ll be purchasing it as a replacement for another device, 42% of those people said it will replace their Windows PC instead.

The survey helps conclude that people who are buying the iPad mini aren’t buying it to replace their iPad, they’re buying it to replace their PC, or to get their feet wet with their first tablet. The Cupertino California company doesn’t have to worry too much about the iPad mini taking customers away from the iPad sales because the mini seems to be bringing new customers into the ecosystem, which calls for a scary proposition for all of Apple’s competitors.
This is less an Apple trend than a general trend away from PCs. Interesting to see the statistics though. Seems there's room for 10 and 7 inch tablets.

I'm not sure about 7" myself. Seems a large screen cell phone is still the best for mobility while a larger 10" screen is preferable for home/hotels, etc. For women that have purses or those with man purses, the 7" seems more reasonable.

I haven't played around with 7" tablets from apple. They're too big for even large pockets right? Coat jackets probably work ok.

Should Apple start competing in the low-end smartphone market? Perhaps it should, argues Business Insider’s Henry Blodget, if the Cupertino, California-based company does not want to lose market share to Google. Apple now has only about a 15% share of the global smartphone market, whereas Android devices now have a 75% share. While Apple is capturing immense profits at the premium end of the market, Blodget points out that app developers “tend to standardize around the platform with the most market share,” so Apple’s weakening market share might become a liability in the future.

The increasing prominence of the low-end smartphone market is powered by strong growth in emerging markets such as India and China. In the mainland, the installed base of smartphones will double to 500 million by the end of 2013, with many college students, blue-collar workers, and young white-collar workers choosing cheaper options from the likes of Samsung and Lenovo.

If Apple wants to defend, much less grow, its market share relative to Android, it's going to have to offer low-priced phones. If it offers low-priced phones, however, its profit margin will almost certainly drop.

Defending market share is much more important to the company's long-term value than maintaining a particular profit margin, so this shouldn't be a tough decision for Apple. But it may cause some angst among the company's investors.
75% vs 15%. Android crushing Apple!

Apple's making "immense profits" while at the same time, Android still has major issues with attracting high end app developers.

Here's an example:
An interview with Telltale’s Steve Allison (SVP of Publishing) reveals the reasons behind the lack of Android love. While they want to release their titles on android devices and have the technical capability to get the job done, “the disparate hardware specs, piracy concerns and state of the Android equivalent of the App Store make it very hard to bring [Telltale's] games over to the Android OS.”
Walking Dead game is available for every console and it's mother but not on Android.

The Android OS isn't bad as I've played around with it, but they have monster issues with Apps. Super easy to pirate and a bazillion OS versions and phones to try and support. Even with the "default standard" Nexus 7 vanilla jelly Bean OS, I've had multiple apps crash or just plain not be supported.

It's not hard to see the problem when compared to iOS:

Image

Image

Compare that toothpick thin support of Jelly Bean to the number of iOS devices already on iOS6. Go back just one version and Android's support is even more pathetic.

Image

Besides having a much more stable, much more profitable OS to develop for, iOS absolutely blows the fuck out of Android devices in actual usage considering your total phone percentage figures.

Android has a ways to go. I tried hard to find apps that were exclusive to Android and there really aren't any besides file managers, etc, while there are a ton of quality apps exclusive to iOS.

Until Android figures out how to stabilize their OS and keep at least he majority of phones up to date while finding a way to curtail pirating (which is easier than on iOS), they have work to do.

But again you're not comparing like to like along with suffering from versionitis. What am I missing out on with my 2.3.2 phone?

Apples triumph is mostly from marketing. Without that they wouldn't be able to screw all their vendors and service providers with relative impunity (for now).

You can stop after reading the quote from the developer about not making an Android version if you want. The point is already made by then. Don't you think a developer would be all over an OS with a 75% share of the market? There are reasons why it isn't as great as it seems.

I think it's an important point to note that apps aren't nearly as stable on Android. I'm experiencing crashing and the forums are full of people talking about compatibility with their phone/version of Android.

iPhone 5 market share boost iOS over Android in the U.S.

Following the successful launch of the iPhone 5, sales of iOS devices have overtaken Android in the U.S., according to Kantar Worldpanel. The research firm found that in the past 12 weeks, sales of Apple (AAPL) smartphones accounted for 48.1% of the market compared to Android’s 46.7% share. Apple loyalty remains high as the majority of iPhone 5 sales, 62%, came from existing iPhone owners while 13% switched from Android, 6% from BlackBerry devices and only a “small number of first time smartphone owners” bought iPhone 5 handsets. An impressive 92% of existing iPhone owners, additionally, noted that their next upgrade will be an Apple device.

Just left a presentation by someone I've known for years who breaks things for a living, extra short summary; iOS is arguably more secure than Android of itself but the developers defeat that via inexperience making it generally easier find something to exploit.

So the developers for Android don't do the same thing or are they all security experts?

Dunno, to some extent different crowd and habits at a guess. Commonly used facilities in iOS than can be done badly which don't have an equivalent in Android from the sound of it.

Was more interested in the network level stuff and didn't ask.

My tuppence worth is that despite the Mini’s impressive lack of bulk and weight, £269 is like a lot of money for a tablet with a 162dpi screen, 16GB of storage, no GPS and a maps app that sucks the scabs off a zombie’s nutsack.

Google Maps with GPS is one of the most used apps on my Nexus so I can’t bring myself to endorse a small(ish) tablet that lacks a decent alternative. Apple’s acolytes no doubt love the Mini, but the rest of us should steer well clear until the version 2 arrives.

Ah, the GPS w/ Google Maps on my android tablet has been a lifesaver. Voice commands can be done from the other side of the car, but I have thought about getting a bluetooth headset to hear turn-by-turn better on the road.

Colorful comment but I don't use apple or google maps at all so that wouldn't even be a factor. Factor two from that same article:
The iPad’s true advantage lies in the availability of dedicated apps. Want the new all singing, all dancing Sky app for your tablet? You have to buy an iPad. And that’s far from a solitary instance. I’ve no doubt many of these apps will end up on Android - the Nexus 7 and 10 will sell in big numbers, and developers will take note - but right now, the iPad has the edge.
Android has a long ways to go to catch up to the iPad in the Tablet Apps department. Even for the ones available on both platforms, the iPad's are better almost always. Give it another year. But hopefully by then, Windows Apps will be challenging the iOS tablet dominance.

I like my Nexus 7. It gets no use because everything is better on my iPad but I like the size and the OS. If I want to stare at an OS, I turn on the Nexus 7 and look at it, and then I grab my iPad to actually use Apps on. I think apple should have released the mini as a retina display.

As for phones:
iPhone vs Android: Apple Winning Despite Sales Figures [SFG]
2 hours ago by Mario Caballero

There have been a lot of stories about how Android is above Apple when it comes to market shares. However SF Gate disagrees. The blog points out that the latest evidence of this came by way of Deutsche Telekon, who recently said that they will be selling the iPhone through T-Mobile within the US.

T-Mobile has always wanted to get their hands on the iPhone. However Apple has never made the iPhone so that it works on the network of T-Mobile. In truth they perhaps were asking for too much money and T-Mobile wouldn’t meet their demands. So it seems that T-Mobile have “changed” their network so as to be able to get the iPhone.

The chairman of Deutsche said that T-Mobile was now complete and they would be able to be competitive in the USA, at the moment they have just 10% of the market in the US.

So apparently T-Mobile thinks that they need to have Apple on board if they are to be competitive. Incidentally T-Mobile was the first partner of Android OS.

The carrier had said that they had lost 700,000 customers during Q4 of 2011 due to the fact that they didn’t offer the iPhone.

So the question is, if Android is as popular as people say, and it has many customers, why would T-Mobile want to do all they could to get the iPhone and Apple? Why do they think the iPhone is needed and why do they believe that they cannot be competitive without it?

It could be that Android doesn’t have much traction with consumers, despite its big gains in the market suggests the blog. Android is 5 years old, yet people are choosing iOS and iPhone if they have the chance to. If the the carrier doesn’t offer it then it seems that people are willing to switch carriers just so they can get their hands on the iPhone
I'm really happy with my iPhone 5. Adding the extra screen size and changing the aspect to 16:9 makes a big difference. the smaller non HD ratio screen was too small. From time to time I wonder how a much larger screen (like the Samsung Note 2) would be like but the iPhone 5 is so freaking light and easy to handle with a great screen and best cell phone speaker ever as well as tops in battery life, and hella fast. With "news" apps coming of age and making better use of screen real estate, I prefer the iPhone's screen size. It doesn't hurt to have LTE making everything super fast as well. 30-40mpbs down is overkill but I'll take it. I'm not knocking the Galaxy SIII because I can see the benefits of size sometimes but for portability, I don't even take my Nexus 7 anywhere. Even that is too big so I wonder if the extra phone size would be worth the weight/bulk as I keep my phone in my shirt pocket. If Apple ever goes with two sizes, one 4 inch and one 5 inch, I'm not entirely sure I'd switch to the 5" version.

I'll be pretty disappointed if iOS 7 doesn't have a major update to the aging iOS UI...but between fancy UI and quality Apps. Apps win as that's what you actually use. I'd like to have both though. It's not like iOS is horrible, just that Android has added a few nice things that I'd like to see on iOS. I'd even like to see some things in Windows 8 added to iOS.

Recent data shows that Apple’s latest smartphone has gained traction among business users. Email account manager Intermedia has revealed that Apple’s iPhone accounts for 68.2 percent of smartphone activations by medium and small businesses from September through November. The company collected this data from the 500,000 premium hosted accounts that it oversees, according to Apple Insider.

Phones based on Google’s Android software came in second at 25.1 percent, and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry came in third at 4.1 percent. Windows Phone placed last, accounting for only 2.6 percent of smartphones recently activated by business users. Apple’s prominence in this sector of the mobile market doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Although Android comprises most of the general market share, its fragmented operating system doesn’t prove to be a good choice for business users. Apple’s iPhone, on the other hand, features a platform that is more secure and seamless than its Google competitor.

It’s also worth noting that the iPad completely dominates the mobile business market when it comes to tablets. Apple’s slate accounts for 92.6 percent of recently activated accounts according to Intermedia.

Haven't used my Nexus 7 in three weeks. (for iPad/iPhone users, don't forget to grab episode one of GOTY Walking Dead for free this week on iTunes!) (not avail on Android)

According to Huberty, a whopping 81 percent of iPad owners will buy another iPad.

Apple’s share of the US tablet market will remain at 50 percent, according to the survey. Among the surprising results: Amazon’s share of the tablet market is expected to drop to sixteen percent, down from 21 percent in 2011. As for Microsoft’s Surface, it could increase to twelve percent of the US tablet market, up from zero percent in 2011.
Hopefully Microsoft tablets can move into second place after a year or two. My Nexus 7 continues to sit unused. The choice is extremely clear. If you have access to an iPad/iPad mini or an Android tablet, the iPad is going to be the tablet being used. It's apps simply are better than Android's offerings and the device itself is rock solid engineering.

...and just some random trivia for the hell of it:
Africa Has More Mobile Phones than U.S.: In fact, the continent has more mobile phones than all of North America and Europe. Asia is the only place in the world with more mobile phones than Africa. There are currently 650 million subscribers in Africa, according to the World Bank. The market has grown 40-fold since 2000.

Seems a stretch to me, never know though. There's more than one carrier running cellsites off solar & diesel, hauling fuel on donkey-back in a couple cases. Makes you wonder how they pay for it.

what you say?

Apple will pay shareholders its second dividend tomorrow, distributing roughly $2.5 billion in $2.65 per share across the company's 935 million outstanding shares.

Flush with billions in cash it simply can't spend fast enough, Apple first announced plans for a dividend program in March, alongside a $10 billion share buyback program. Each quarter, the company stated it will pay its shareholders a $2.65 per share dividend. Shareholders of record will receive dividend payments tomorrow, November 15th.
Apples p/e is around 10

After the craziness yesterday and today, Netflix's P/E is 189 or higher. Amazon's P/E is 3,257

When you consider P/E, Apple is a steal and they actually make tons of money but the market is nuts. When you look at the valuations of companies, it makes no sense.

AAPL may level off. I'd be surprised if it didn't. If that's the case, look at Microsoft's share price. It's stagnant for a decade.

That's probably what Apple has coming after it settles down.

OMG, they paid a 0.5% dividend, the second in their history, could I be more wrong?

If they were paying out 5% it might make some sense to buy in at their crazy price, but when your only profit chance is them being ever more inflated and risky... huh?
