New PC advice
So in the next 1-3 months I am going to be building a new computer. I was going to buy a Dell but it doesn't make sense to spend more $$ when I can do it for cheaper.
I was hoping someone could throw together some suggestions for a build. If I do it all on my own I'm going to probably buy nicer, more expensive shit than I need (looking at the core i7, etc currently).
What it will be used for:
-Games - currently WoW and EQ2. However I don't want to build something low end with just these two games in mind because I may want to try some of the newer games once I have a computer that will run them, and I'd like to be able to play them at max settings.
Other stuff isn't as much of a factor, I use VMWare to log into work computer and while it hogs resources on my current computer I can't imagine it will have any kind of impact with any new computer I build.
I do know I probably want around 4GB of RAM and a big hard drive (600GB-1TB). Also - if it's not too much of a pain I'd like to be able to use both SATA and IDE cause my current internal HD has 400GB of music and movies that I would rather not have to mess around with transferring.
Also if it makes any difference I am planning on running Windows 7 on this machine. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: New PC advice
Honestly, unless you're building a top-end gaming rig, you can get a Dell with the specs you want for 10-15% cheaper than what you would pay to build it yourself.was going to buy a Dell but it doesn't make sense to spend more $$ when I can do it for cheaper.
For like $600, you can get a Core2 Quad with 4 gigs of ram, 500 gig drive and a legit copy of windows 7... just check out newegg and spend another $100 on a semi-decent video card and you're set. A system like that will run WOW and EQ2 with no problems whatsoever.
Just get a hard drive enclosure and stick the old drive in there.my current internal HD has 400GB of music and movies that I would rather not have to mess around with transferring.

Re: New PC advice
Easy work around for that is to just get an external HD enclosure.. Pop your old drive in there, plugs in USB and you're set.Funkmasterr wrote: Also - if it's not too much of a pain I'd like to be able to use both SATA and IDE cause my current internal HD has 400GB of music and movies that I would rather not have to mess around with transferring.

Re: New PC advice
Really? The one I was looking at building on Dell was about 2k. I do want to kinda go a bit above what I need cause I don't plan on building another computer after this for at least 4-5 years. Not that I'm saying you're wrong cause I'm certainly not, I just want to be sure before I buy something.miir wrote:Honestly, unless you're building a top-end gaming rig, you can get a Dell with the specs you want for 10-15% cheaper than what you would pay to build it yourself.was going to buy a Dell but it doesn't make sense to spend more $$ when I can do it for cheaper.

Yeah I totally didn't think of enclosures since I've never had to mess with one, thanks for that.

Re: New PC advice
If you're just gonna use it for WOW, EQ2 and work, you don't need a top-of-the line XPS.
You can play WOW on a Celeron and I can play EQ2 with maxed out settings on a Core2 Quad with 4 gigs of RAM... I usually kick the settings down to balanced to 2 box EQ2 on my rig.
Just a quick browse @ newegg to get prices on some basic components that are comparable to the Dell build.
Motherboard - $75
CPU - $150
RAM 4 gigs - $75
Case/Power Supply - $100
Hard Drive 500 gig - $60
Optical Drive - $30
Windows 7 - $200
That's $700.

Re: New PC advice
Nice, and I can get Windows for cheaper probably, cause my brother is in school right now.
Re: New PC advice
He still needs a video card... a GTS250 would play either well or one of the DX11 ATI cards (budget gamer series) should do just fine.

I didn't include that because the Dell I looked at would require getting a decent video card.

<<Edited out as Video Cards were covered while I was typing.>>
The benefit of buying a machine from Dell or other places is that there is a single warranty to worry about instead of one for each item you bought. You also get a machine that is pretty much good to go out of the box.
If you go part by part you need to make sure that everything is compatible with each other. Then is something doesn't work you have to wait for a replacement for the rma if that is still a possibility.
On the other hand if you build you will get exactly what you want. Normally case design isn't that much of a big deal but other times you really want that 240mm fan or the see through door to show off lights and such. Also, you can buy your parts one a time and if you aren't in a hurry to build you can wait to get them all together. This way you don't have to drop a lot of money all at once.
I personally like to build my computers. Even though I will get hit with some frustrations it is worth it to me so that I keep learning. I think I am getting the urge to build again. It has been almost 3 years I think.

Yeah Bubba, the single warranty thing is why I was originally leaning towards Dell. Maybe I will just go that route after all. Thanks for the advice so far, sirs!

Getting more specific:
Intel Core i5-750 - $200
Basically a slower, more reasonably priced i7.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115215
MSI P55-CD53 - $90
Supports i5 and i7 so you have some upgrade room.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 813130240R
Patriot Viper 4GB DDR3 1600 - $105
Not the fastest RAM you can get for the chipset but good value.
If you want the fastest, 4 gigs of DDR3 2133 starts at $225.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820220285
Seagate Barracuda ST31000528AS 1TB - $90
A TB is pretty much gonna be the same price regardless of brand.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822148433
Antec case/PSU combo - $105
A well designed, no frills case and a 500w PSU. Newegg has a bunch of really good Antec combos.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDeal ... mbo.265959
Opical Drive - $30
ASUS EAH4870 DK/HTDI/1GD5 Radeon HD 4870 - $140 (incl mail in rebate)
A very good midrange card with a gig of GDDR5 memory.

Re: New PC advice
I've started buying pre-fab'ed and add the bits and peices to make it servicable as well. Last I bought was an HP desktop for ~600$/ popped in a mid-market video card(~150$) and I was playing pretty much anything I wanted, DVR'ing TV shows and it streaming content ot the 360 all at the same time.
Unless you want to do something crazy on the performance scale like crosslinking your video cards or something like that, you can't beat the volume discounts you get from buying something pre-made.

Re: New PC advice
I'll be getting a new desktop sometime after Xmas. Probably more like Feb. I'm seriously considering just getting a Dell again. I've had this XPS for 5 years now and it still runs WoW at max settings and can push Dawn of War 2 with low settings. It was the best computer I have ever owned in terms of how long it was viable so I think it was a great investment. Who knows though. I may get a wild hair and try to build one myself. However, I truely think this next computer may be the last desktop I own. When I do my addition on my home in the next 4-5 years, there are no plans for a desk anymore. I rarely sit at mine now anyway. I play games on my TV and my laptop hasn't been opened in 2-3 months since I tend to do all of my surfing on my iphone now.
My wife will get my current machine when I am done. She rarely ever uses a PC, instead using a laptop for work and writing. She no longer games, so has no need for a desktop at all. She says that, but I know she'll want to play Diablo 3 when it is eventually released! It's pretty sad that the only PC gaming I plan on doing is WoW, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, and Dawn of War 2.

Re: New PC advice
Might be a little out of date now (Feb 2009) but my last upgrade thread shows why building your own PC can produce a very high performance machine for a decent price if you do the research.
http://www.veeshanvault.org/forums/view ... 25&t=23769
I pump out these upgrade threads about once every 2 years although the last one before the i7 was deleted during the VV move.

Nice setup. Even better price. That should last you a good while until the urge for something new hits again.

Put in my order today, but I ended up going with the i7 instead. It isn't estimated to ship until the 22nd of this month, which confuses me. Has something I picked for my build not been invented yet?

I've never had Dell not overestimate their ship dates. I'd be surprised if it didn't ship this week.

Dell (and others) should give you the option of paying them a reasonable extra fee to not put all of that extra bullshit onto the PC you're ordering. Maybe a bit more to expedite the build / shipping process.

Still nothing, I call customer support today cause I'm getting irritated, and it sure didn't help. Someone answers me call and tells me how their customer databases are down, they expect it to take 3 hours for resolution and to call back, and hangs up on me.
I then decide to poke around online, and see site upon site full of people bitching about how their orders have been delayed/canceled over the past few months.
I really hope this doesn't happen and mine ships soon I probably would have explored other options had I seen something like that coming.

Lol, I could care less what date they gave me, particularly because I didn't get that date displayed on my order until after it was placed. For a $1500 computer I see it as completely unacceptable for it to take > a week to ship, yes.miir wrote:They gave you a ship date of the 24th, and you're getting irritated because it hasn't shipped in a week?

Re: New PC advice
As for the shitware that comes installed on prebuilt PCs... Dell is actually one of the best for not installing too much shit. Usually just a handful of programs that take 10-15 minutes to get rid of.
It's mind boggling how much useless shit HP and Sony put on their systems.

Yeah with my experience, Sony is definitely the worst for the garbageware. There is a lot of it that's actually quite a pain in the ass to get rid of, too.

So you do care?Funkmasterr wrote:Lol, I could care less what date they gave me, particularly because I didn't get that date displayed on my order until after it was placed. For a $1500 computer I see it as completely unacceptable for it to take > a week to ship, yes.
Regardelss... if it's unacceptable to you, cancel your order.
For all you know, Intel could have that CPU on backorder which means it would be delayed from any systembuilder you choose. The only prebuilt PC you'll get in less than a week is a non-custom clearance/sale model. Even Chidoro's took nearly 3 weeks which is what you should probably expect.
You having unrealistic expectations does not mean that Dell has poor service.

Well, if you want to get technical and be a real grammar nazi prick, saying "I could care less" would imply that I indeed do care to some degree, but could potentially care less than I do. You being obnoxious aside, I'm not really interested in excuses. I don't feel you should list something for sale unless you have it readily available, and you should certainly give the date BEFORE the order is placed so people have the choice to not go through with it.miir wrote:So you do care?Funkmasterr wrote:Lol, I could care less what date they gave me, particularly because I didn't get that date displayed on my order until after it was placed. Canceling isn't that simple, from everything I'm reading Dell all but refuses to allow you to do so. I'm more concerned that the experience that the majority of people buying Dells over the past few months have had is the experience I'll have (delays of 1-2 months and orders being delayed so long they get canceled).

Re: New PC advice
If you had said that you couldn't care less you would have been implying that you do not care, which I assume was your intention.
If it doesn't ship by the 24th, then you can start complaining. You being obnoxious aside, I'm not really interested in excuses.
I've cancelled orders from Dell days after I placed them and it's never taken more than a single 5 minute phonecall.Canceling isn't that simple

Re: New PC advice
So as I was walking to get my lunch I was thinking about the possibility that I have unreasonable expectations, but I don't think I do considering al I'm waiting on them to do is snap a few pieces together and put it in a box. I'll wait but if it doesn't ship by the 22nd I'll cancel the order.

That will be just in time for the new EQ2 expansion.Funkmasterr wrote:So as I was walking to get my lunch I was thinking about the possibility that I have unreasonable expectations, but I don't think I do considering al I'm waiting on them to do is snap a few pieces together and put it in a box. Re: New PC advice
75 to 90 shouldn't take you more than a few weeks.
Even if you wanted to start fresh, leveling up takes no time at all.

I was like 72 or 73 I think. Leveling was really slow for me then cause I was kinda gimp against the Kunark shit. Really liked that expansion though!miir wrote:75 to 90 shouldn't take you more than a few weeks.

Re: New PC advice
Of course, I went on hiatus from eq2 last month. Legal Day 1 with IBM is at the end of this month so I doubt I'll get to play until some time in March. Think my raiding days be ovah! That's ok though since I am doing other things with my time.
