My 13yr old brother could've written a better article.

I listed all the parts, anyone going to build my PC for cheaper?

Well it's hard to get an exact price due to variables such as... What sort of memory is that? Brand and such. The same applies to the drives.

Major components, including the OS, you can probably bring in around $2,000. I didn't go through all the rest of the software so I'm sure there are one or two things in there one might want. Personally I would have saved money and bought a lower tier video card (such as the new nvidia 460!) but that's just me.

Anyway, I only did a brief look but here's most of it:

1 317-1885 Intel Core i7 920 QC (2.66GHz, 8MB Cache) - $270 (Would have spent $20 more on a 930)
1 317-2663 6GB Triple Channel 1333Mhz DDR3 - $170 (Varies on manufacturer etc. $170 is about average though from what I saw on NewEgg)
1 320-8780 Single ATI Radeon HD 5970, 2GB GDDR5 $700 (would not have purchased!)
1 341-0496 1TB - SATA-II, 3Gb/s, 7,200RPM, 32MB Cache HDD - $100
1 342-1203 600GB - SATA-II, 3Gb/s, 10k RPM, 32MB Cache HDD - $60
1 313-8769 Single Drive: Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD) - $80 (Would have spent ~$50 more for a BR burner)
1 313-8322 Cosmic Black, Alienware Aurora Chassis, 875W PSU - Bit of room here based on selection. I'd put that around $150 for case/PSU combo.
1 421-2062 Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bit, English - $175
1 317-1904 Alienware High-Performance Liquid Cooling - $100 (No idea what they use but that seems about average cost)

All that is $1,800 and the only thing really missing is the motherboard and that varies a lot too and I don't have any idea what they use in Alienware these days. I seriously doubt it's over $200 though so boom.. There's $2,000.

Honestly it just depends on what one wants. Some people like the satisfaction of building their own, getting the exact brand components they want, and maybe save a few bucks in the meantime by doing it themselves. Others just want to open a box, plug some shit in, and hit the power button and just have it work. If they have money to burn and want to pay someone to put it together and offer some sort of support there's nothing wrong with that

Yeah, that's pretty much where I was at. You also have S&H on the items, since none of the best deals are all on the same site, and it's very much a wash at the end of the day. Nevermind the lack of warranty...

I need to stick up for that 5970! I was beginning to think it was overkill as I was reading reviews, but it has proven it's worth by running all my games, even Crysis in 5970 x 1200 at well over 60fps average. That's a goddamn nice graphics card! I don't even have a need to over clock it, and it's built in such a way that I could squeeze another 25% out of it with just a couple of tweaks. I couldn't be happier with what I have. They do not skimp on the presentation for the Alienware, that's for sure. It was very, very nice package. Also, it's got to be the coolest looking and quietest tower that I have ever seen. My satisfaction level is through the roof! I would order from them in a heartbeat. All feelings of unease melted away when I opened the package.

Now I just need the damn speakers to get here so I can do my wire clean up and management. It's a freaking mess under my desk right now.

Well I got all the prices from NewEgg so shipping would have been mostly free I would imagine. As for warranty you're on your own other than individual components.

Oh.. And Crysis sucks. Why does Crytek ruin every game with lame supernatural alien shit. Crysis 2 wont be any different!

Well, Crysis looks good! I'm still on the tutorial beach! Dawn of War 2 is a better example of what I'll be playing (and WoW of course). I was surprised at how great Left4Dead2 looked and ran. It's really a beautiful game and probably the first I would fire up to show off Eyefinity. Then I keep getting little surprises, like the fact that Torchlight and Trine run in full 5970 x 1200. I was not expecting that at all when I fired them up, so imagine my surprise! Hell, so does Titanquest!

There were some problems though. First and foremost, the first time I played WoW with Eyefinity, I jumped into flight form and got pretty dizzy really fast by flying around. That's something that I've never heard anyone mention in any reviews, so I was a little alarmed. Thankfully that feeling went away, but I felt it again while playing Left4Dead 2 later that same night. Either I've fully adjusted or I was just not feeling 100% that first night, because I've had no problems since! Setting all the monitors up took some trial and error as well, seeing as how I've never used a multi monitor setup before. I was pretty tired that first night too, but I still felt like a retard.

Well, I could ramble on and on about this thing, but I better get to using it right now instead of talking about it :)

So here we go again. I am wanting to try for the sub-1K build (excluding monitor).

Any suggestions from folks who have been keeping an eye on pricing/emerging tech?

SSD for OS, or still $$? USB 3.0 for OS? I CAN HAS CONFUSED!

So, what I want is a quick, low-cost gaming solution. Say for having a layout (and not as yet checking prices), here goes:

CPU: Intel i7
MB: ASUS, or anything NOT EVGA (have had issues with their MBs.)
RAM: 6GB (I like G-Sjill, but have heard of recent issues with how they report their clock speeds)
GPU: Solid, but obviously not the newest shit. Good enough for a single-card solution
PSU: Likely around 650W, but not sure on power needs of final gear
Case: Something not as loud as my Cooler Master Stacker!
Optical: Blu Ray Burner
OS Disk: Would love SSD or other non-spinning solution
Storage Disk: 7200RPM w/e 1TB

Perhaps I am being unrealistic for hitting the sub-1K ceiling with this. I am going to start looking at prices when I get a chance... Anyway, for those that are on top of things, is this realistic?

Danka, as always.

Thanks, I'll check their component prices. I should also check Fry's....I love Newegg, but the inevitable RMA is easier when it is a simple drive to buttfuck-Wilsonville/buttfuck-Hillsburrito.

I'll still build it myself. Call me old-fashioned, but I get a kick out of building them. :)

I bought my last few rounds of components from Amazon. The prices were comparable and the RMA process easier. Also, free two day shipping if you have Amazon Prime. I find browsing for components awful on Amazon, so I usually find what I want on Newegg first.

Do not buy a friggin Seagate drive. They still fail more often than WD or Hitachis.

Hey if SSD was reasonably priced for media storage, I'd be all over it. Until then, it is spinning disks that fail. My last 2 WD's (500G, 1TB) have failed. Drives are a weak link.

So, I could have easily coasted under 1K with less RAM, no SSD, no BD-R and cheaper mobo and GPU.

I figure at a more balanced build, and I do save some by going with the i5 and GTX460.

Ah shit, forgot about Win7 license. Add 99.99 to it for OEM license.

I learned my lesson when I lost one of my HDs awhile back. I use second copy

http://www.centered.com/

It's straight forward mirroring for folders which I prefer over mirroring entire hard drives. I don't keep pron movies though. I've got 500,000 ++ images (art), I'm probably closer to 1,000,000 now. Not all that needs to be saved but I do mirror specific collections.

Well, it's certainly not the end of the world. It's just that it was so damn organized. I was quite proud. Honestly, I would've been much more upset if I lost my music collection (even though that would be considerably easier to replace).

As it is now, I really don't think I'll start the porn collection back up. Doing a little work here and a little there over the course of years wasn't bad at all, but the prospect of having to stary over makes me go "eh". It's the end of an era!

I have loads of backups of my music and family pictures/movies though, so I have no fear of losing anything vitally important to me.

I have about 300 gb that I can pass on to you. Lots of My Sister's Hot Friend clips too. Not sure how I got so many. I downloaded one file and it had like 50 of them in it. Most are horrible but some are choice. Epornium.com is a wonderful site.

BTW, SSD's kick ass.

I've been loving mine since I bought it.

How can you not love super fast OS booting, game booting, app booting, cache, etc etc? I used to dread rebooting, now it's no big deal as the reboot is so damn fast. Windows 7 handles SSDs well. The early issues have been worked out.

Image

I still don't get why people cheap out on hard drives. Get SSD for the OS. It's a huge speed factor for your system. Everything is faster. Who cares how fast the rest of your system is if you're sitting around waiting for shit to load?

Image

Mine was 285.00 back in July 2009. They've only improved since then with prices down a little. It's so damn small and light. I don't even have a slot in my PC for it. I just sort of laid in on some cables inside my case. Fast reliable storage. Perfect for your OS. Backing up my OS drive is insanely fast using Acronis.

Image

Windows 7 is even faster.

My SPeeds

* Maximum sequential read speed 220MB/s
* Maximum sequential write speed 200MB/s

Today's SSDs are in the 285MB/s range...even faster.

BTW Canalek, it's odd that your SSD is 3.5". Just about all SSDs are 2.5" drives. No really need to have 3.5" case. Wonder why they did that.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I think I will just change to the 2.5" OCZ, which I believe is the same price. Part number has an "E" in it, but otherwise, it appears the same. Odd! I read that the 3.5" included bracket sucks, but I figure those that complain simply do not know how to work shit.

Anything else seem odd with my build? I appreciate the comments.

Oh, and I do not need a Windows license after all. I forgot I have a MSDN license through work, and I am going to be working from home 3 days a week starting next month.

Yay me!

Im just thinking that if you ever want to move the SSD to laptop or smaller build PC, 2.5 would be nice to have since SSDs dont really even need 2.5 and could be even smaller. As for brackets, as I mentioned, mine is just wedges between some cables (not up against metal) it's feather light. You don't need to worry about vibration/noise or anything.

Good point. There is always Velcro if I really want to get it out of the way, depending on the case layout.

I think space management will be much easier for this build, even with the mid tower. A single video card is much friendlier than SLI! Hopefully, that motherboard works out for me. I still have SATA issues with my (3rd) EVGA nForce 790i Ultra. I like the EVGA video cards, but I am done with their mobos. I should have stuck with ASUS last time... ah well, we shall see!

I've thought about getting a ssd for my OS as well, but to be honest I'm not sure I'd know how to go about getting the OS install stuff off the recovery partition on my current HD and onto a new one. Sure I could figure out but that combined with my laziness is what's stopped me.

460s are nice cards. Personally I'd pick up the EVGA that has the lifetime warranty. Unless you're like Fairweather who just has his wife buy him new shit every couple years then it doesn't really matter.

As far as SSDs go I'm sure they are nice but reboot time doesn't really bother me since I don't do it that often. Normally if I do shutdown my PC I just go into Stand By (or Sleep in Win7 terminology. Why did they have to change that?) instead of shutting it down completely. Even when I have to do a full reboot it's done in under 2 minutes. I'm sure I'll get a SSD eventually but for me the price point just isn't right yet for the 120GB ones. Or 128. Whatever size they come in.

Reboot isn't the important part. Everything is faster. Specifically, anything on your OS drive, games, apps, etc.

Although I like the idea of a lifetime warranty, I decided to not go with EVGA this time around. I had to RMA both of my 9800GTX cards, and my 790i Ultra motherboard (twice). Good service, but I had bad luck with them.

The missile has been fired!

Also getting a ASUS 23" backlit-LED monitor. :D

well, after watching BFG go out of business...I wouldn't do anything but buy evga. I was going to upgrade this year, but a friend just sent me a second 260gtx along with a 780i board...so I'm going to give that a shot for a year or two.

Well, if I made a mistake with the MSI card, I guess I just have to live with that should the company fail (I wasn't aware of BFGFAIL). I just went with products that I had not previously had issues with. That run of bad luck with EVGA was plenty enough for me to try something else.

Got the monitor (ASUS 23" LED-backlit) last night and whew, it is thin and light! I am going to fire it up tonight after the build, assuming all of my parts are accounted for in today's big shipment. Can't wait!

actually, MSI is probably a safe bet. They don't do their warranty here in teh states anyways, they have a company they pay to do it. MSI themselves is not likely to go titsup anytime soon though, they make OEM stuff out the wahzoo, which would keep most those companies afloat.

BFG was not a manufacturer, just a rebadger of cards, just like EVGA I guess, and that's a tough business model when you are limited to one manufacturer, and that manufacturer fucks you over.

Weeee, no RMAs! The new build, so far, is fantastic! I got a late start, so just to the point where Win7Ultimate is up and patched. I did move the swap to the spinning disk, but have yet to do any BIOS/OS tweaks. It is very QUIET, which is nice. Super-fast OS load with the SSD. Seems very solid. I'm going to slap Office 2010 on there via MSDN (yay free licensed shit!) and I think I have a copy of that Crysis game around somewhere to check out how good the GFX are. Will also chuck a blu-ray movie through there to see how well the monitor performs.

So far, very pleased!

This thread was a major reason for my current system, so I thought I'd reply to it. =)

This spring, my Asus P6T mobo, Core i7-920, and DDR3 6gb system will be 11 years old. I'm on my 4th video card; the original GTX 285, then GTX 750, then GTX 960, and now GTX 1660 Super. I bought myself a 4k monitor this past Xmas just to see how well the GTX 960 would do 4k. It could just barely run WOW Classic at 4k, like at 20-30 FPS with the occasional DirectX crash error. And yes, I realize there is no real graphics need to run WOW Classic at 4k hah!

Instead of buying a new system and after researching the minimal difference between PCIE 2.0 and PCIE 3.0, I replaced the GTX 960 with a GTX 1660 Super. WOW Classic is a little better at 4k, like around 40-60fps and no more crashes. I haven't tested any other games at 4k, but YouTube at 4k seem to do fine.

Still, I've finally decided to replace the core system. Going with AMD this time:

MSI x570 mobo, for the future use of the PCIE 4.0 slot
Ryzen 5 3600 CPU
Corsair or G.Skill 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 3600
Samsung 500gb M.2 NVME SSD
Seasonic Gold 850 PSU

Comes in around $700 from Amazon.

Current video cards still aren't capping PCIE 3.0 x16 bandwidth yet. However, the cost difference between an AMD based system that is PCIE 3 compatible and PCIE 4 isn't that much, so I figured why not go with it.

The Samsung M.2 is Gen3, even thought the chipset and CPU support Gen 4. Samsung hasn't released their Gen4 M.2 yet, and I'm not sure I want/need to wait for that. Sabrent and some other brands have Gen4 M.2, but they are even with or slower than Samsung's Gen3 970 Evo Plus M.2s All of them are a huge step over my current SATA III SSD on a SATA II controller anyway.

AMD!

Those components should be good to run EQ.

Hi Stonie,

$700 is less than I paid for my CPU alone! : )

Man, this thread brings back some memories. i7 920 was one of the all time greats.

I didn't do a fancy write up but this is my recent build:

viewtopic.php?f=25&t=26595

I kind of threw cost/performance out the window and just went for performance.

While 16 cores may be overkill, this AMD 3950 build has been unbelievably stable. Any of the recent AMD CPUs are a good choice, looks like you have a nice build going.

I did read that. I would love to be able to get a 3950. Cost is definitely a factor for me. The lesson the X58/i7-920 system has taught me is that replacing video cards every 3-4 years is good enough to keep a gaming system going. Modern games just don't rely on the CPU very much. Upgrading to AMD X570/Ryzen 3600 is, for me, the most cost effective means of finally bringing my system up to the current standards of UEFI, SATA III, M.2, PCIE 4, and USB 3, all in one swoop. The higher end Ryzen 3rd gens sure would be nice for my SETI@HOME stats, though. =)

I've read several articles expressing the opinion that PCIE 4 will have a limited life span compared to PCIE 2 and 3. Intel and Nvidia both not having PCIE 4 capable chipsets/CPUs/GPUs out right now could be an indication the experts are correct. I don't think this will matter much either way, as current video cards are still not capping PCIE 3's bandwidth. The current AMD 5700XTs at PCIE 4 x8 have lower bench marks than Nvidia GTX 2080s at PCIE 3 x8 or x16. This is actually a good thing for me, as I have no logical reason to replace my recently bought GTX 1660 Super, and will have a core system ready to handle future cards when I am ready.

Good planning for upgrades. I agree, upgrading video cards helped keep the old 920 and CPU after that relevant for a long time.

I had to go with the RTX 2070 because I game at 4K and push 2 X 4K monitors and one 1920x1080, probably soon to be 3x4K monitors so need the power, plus VR headsets I use need the power and use the USB C video port on the new cards.

Early rumors show next gen nVidia card with a huge increase in power so I'm sure I'll upgrade in a year or two at most.

Or.. Stop being cheap and get a 2080 TI.

Nah, I was not impressed with this generation of Nvidia cards. I grabbed the RTX 2070 because I had to due to old card dying, but right after I bought it they came out with the "Super RTX" which was annoying.

I would be interested in trying an AMD graphics card out next gen but Nvidia will probably still have the better cards. (and drivers)

Will have to see how the 2070 performs at 4K with Cyberpunk 2077 in September.

New batch of Nvidia cards coming soon...
The RTX 3080 will be available starting at $699, delivering up to “twice the performance of [the RTX] 2080 at the same price” with 10 GB of GDDR6X video memory. It will be released Sept. 17.

Coming in October will be the RTX 3070 with 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM (not the faster GDDR6X memory in the two other GPUs). Pricing will start at $499 for a “sweet spot” card that Huang said is faster than the RTX 2080 Ti, which debuted at $1,199. The RTX 2070 also launched at $499, and the RTX 3070 is 60% faster than the last-gen card, Nvidia said in a news release. The RTX 3070 is “designed for 4K gaming,” according to Nvidia.

Rounding out the lineup is the behemoth RTX 3090, which Nvidia has dubbed the “BFGPU” (“Big Ferocious GPU”) and says is “the world’s first 8K gaming GPU.” Nvidia invited people such as former G4 host Adam Sessler and Kinda Funny’s Tim Gettys to play Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Control in 8K resolution at 60 frames per second. The card — which is up to 50% faster than the Titan RTX, according to Nvidia — will feature a whopping 24 GB of GDDR6X VRAM, and will be available starting Sept. 24 at $1,499.
Nice that Nvidia actually gives decent performance for the price this go around. Thanks AMD!

My current card (1070 Ti) is doing well for now but I'd probably be in for a 3080 next time. Assuming the extra $200 over the 3070 was worth it. I'd have to check benchmarks on that.

I watched the press conference. Pre third party testing, the performance boost looks great for the 30xx series. I was forced into buying a 2070 due to equipment failure (thanks nVidia!). I'll probably buy a 3080 in the next few months. Of course an RTX SUPER model might fuck everyone over again that buys the first generation like happened with the 20XX series. The 2070 I have is pretty good so I can wait a bit and check out the benchmarks and driver performance etc. New architecture so good idea to see if any major issues found in hardware that's not driver fixable except for a SUPER hardware version fuckyouover release 6 months later that they knew they would be releasing but wanted those initial sales.

Right now the leaders are AMD for CPU and Nvidia for GPU. I'm glad the consoles went with AMD CPU/GPU to provide Nvidia some competition in the GPU department. I hope Nvidia didnt' intentionally hold back this time with the 30xx series. I fully understand advances in performance each year but half year jumps with "SUPER" are bullshit. Not good for keeping a happy first adopter (usually the most loyal group). But when there's no competition I guess they can do whatever they want.

After owning Intel CPUs for decades, I'm really happy with my AMD CPU. It's one piece of the puzzle but I've never had such a stable PC. Zero crashes. Super smooth performance no matter what I'm doing or multiple games and apps I'm running on multiple screens. I'm sure the AMD motherboard enabled 4th gen NVMe M.2 helps as well. Maybe Intel boards will catch up at some point to the AMD x570 MBs! Intel failed at an entire generation of FABs in creating smaller nm chips. Lets hope they got the wake up call. If not, AMD has a plan and are executing flawlessly on it.

While I am sure we'll see 30xx TI's eventually I don't know if Super will be a thing again. At least not anytime soon.

The only reason they were a thing last time is because Nvidia released overpriced, super-small incremental cards, and AMD called them out on their bullshit by releasing better cards at better prices. The whole SUPER thing was a reaction to that. If Nvidia had simply released those as the initial RTX versions they'd have been fine. But they were greedy fucks and brought it on themselves by wanting to milk consumers for everything they could. I have an Nvidia card, and will probably get another at some point, but seriously... Fuck Nvidia.

Anyway, regarding PC stability I have had no issues with my Intel 9700K. Most crashes these days, regardless of hardware, are due to the crappy Windows software that Microsoft puts out.

My next upgrade is probably 4+ years away but I'd have no issue going with AMD at that time if the price/performance was there. However, for my use at this time, I still think Intel is the better choice.
