Where was that poll conducted at? I imagine at a site that caters to people who regularly download from torrents.
It was conducted here:

which is partial to torrents so that did play a factor.

As for newsgroups, if you're serious about using it as a source, you need to subscribe to a dedicated provider like giganews. I may stop recommending giganews though as sometimes I'm not getting max download speeds (so not worth recommending it if it's going to slow down my own downloads!). I don't know if it's giganews or Cox yet. I average over 10Mbps but it's not always maxed at 12.5Mbps. It still spikes over 20Mbps so who knows.

I've used a few of the web hosting download places for comics. Some are better than others. mediafire seems to be the best. There's no "60 second wait" to download for free, it's fast, and doesn't seem to cut off free downloaders after a certain size limit. Rapidshare is only good if you need one thing. I did figure out that if you manage to start multiple downloads through rapidshare before the first download is complete, you can grab like 4 things before it cuts you off (as soon as the first download completes). After that it's like an hour delay before you can download again. I try to avoid them but for small downloads like magazines and comics, they're ok.

I'll try Giganews later, probably tomorrow. If I sign up, who wants to refer me and get 20$ credit? First response with a link here gets the prize.

I'm less than impressed. I get better results for free from torrents. I'll play with it for a day or 2 more, then I'm cancelling my Giganews account. Sorry Fash. I hope you at least got the 5$ out of it.

I searched for about 15 different things and got at least 5 crashes. Worse yet, most search results netted me absolutely nothing. As a test, I put these same searches in the torrent site I usually use, and I got hits on every single search. I also got an annoying as fuck site link to Newsleecher with a picture of a big fat cat saying "LOOKING FOR SOMETHING?" whenever I tried to use Superserach. I'm just completely annoyed with it. Perhaps I'm just too retarded to run it properly or something. It's about as far from user friendly as a program can get IMO.

I cannot justify 25$ a month for something that's so obtuse when drag n drop torrents are free. Who knows, 2 more days and I might change my mind.

Whoo the less people using Usenet the better! Personally I think torrents suck. I never even bothered reinstalling torrent software on my new PC.

Oh and giganews is overpriced. $25 a month wtf? I only pay $15 a month for my service and that's more than reasonable.

I'm not a usenet or NewsLeecher evangelist, but I've used usenet since I was a kid (I'm 39) for both text and binary purposes and personally prefer it. I'm not trying to talk you into using it or to give it more time, but I am curious about these crashes. I've been using NewsLeecher for a while now, and I think I could count on one hand the number of crashes (all while using 3.9 beta versions). I also don't recall the "big fat cat saying 'LOOKING FOR SOMETHING?'" issue either. I've never had trouble finding nearly anything I want to find, although some older software, films or more obscure music can be iffy at times. If you're experiencing very poor search results as described, I'd question your search methods before assuming that it's not available somewhere - unless, of course, you're searching for extremely oddball stuff that is unlikely to be found. If you can find a torrent for it, it's probably out there on usenet.

Fair, are you searching the general area for 200 days?... It's been rare for me to come up empty...

Usually I find everything, and it's fast as fuck... Torrents cannot compare. Make sure you've set the connections up to 4 or more.

What version are you using? the newest beta?

A new beta was released last night. I will upgrade to that later and see if that makes a difference in the crashes. Yes, I am up to 200 days on the searches, not sure about the ports though. I'll look into those tonight.

The fact that no one else has issues makes me think it's a me thing, so we'll see!

It's OK not to use giganews/newsleecher!

BTW, I downloaded the first season of BSG again last night at full bandwidth and had no problem finding it so there wasn't an issue for me.

Every so often the Supersearch will go down for a short time but that's the exception, not the rule.

Another note: I read on the forums that the latest beta (3.9 b15) may have a memory leak. The two people complaining both had queues of over 400GB...that's crazy talk. They must just leave newsleecher up constantly downloading 24/7. abuse!

I don't keep a running queue except for a single day when I may be downloading multiple 360 iso or a full TV season, etc.

I've stuck with 3.9 b9. (Oct 07 release) I read the release notes each time a new beta comes out. If I'm not having issues with what he's fixing or there are no new features I want, I stick with what I have.

Also Fair, are you switching between the Adult content and the rest of the binaries? There are buttons in the top left. Click the heart icon if you're searching for porn, and the other icon if not. All porn is separated to make searching easier for both porn/non porn

Fuck. No I'm not. Thanks for knowing what I was looking for!

I figure if I'm going to be paying 25$ a month for this, it better replace one or more of the pay sites I have memberships with.

Thanks for not giving up on me all! Tonight is round 2.

If you can't find what you're looking for tonight, post the area of interest here. Some search terms may work better than others.

Also, use the filters. If you search for a generic adult topic, you'll get 1000's of small spam images. If that happens, set your filter to eliminate anything less than 100kb (if you don't have your advanced filters displayed, they look like this:

Image

You can also see the heart icon in that pic. Use the "Result Search" to further filter your searches.

Another tip is finding the name of someone that generally posts stuff you like and then do a search by their name to see all of their posts.

in a non porn search, typing "discography" is a good one, and "top 100" to find all sorts of mp3 groupings.

Yes, Cox also has limited their newgroups to 300kbps if you use their incomplete, less than three day backoged servers. Using giganews, I've gone over 160GB in a month without a peep from them, mostly at the full 12.5Mbps.

I'm over 500 Gigs DLed as of right now, even with several weekends of nothing in the que. Good times indeed. I just wanted to pass along my thanks to all of you for the help and not giving up on me. I've gotten loads of great stuff, like Warhammer 40k Codexes, all the novels from the Black Library, and a metric shit ton of porno. Not just any porn, but great porn! I've fleshed out my collection a great deal. I've also DLed god knows how many music discographys.

It has the majority of everything I'm looking for, but there have been some exceptions where I've had to go elsewhere.

So I am bit of a tardo when it comes to this kind of stuff. I installed and bought license for NewsLeecher + Search.

Now, how do I get newsgroups/usenet/wtf information in the app to begin searching?

Searching should work but you can't download anyting unless plug in your news servers (either a paid service like giganews or your own ISP's news servers)

The basics should be in my little tutorial. (first post on this thread. very amateur tutorial, but gets the job done)

Just remember, Newsleacher's Supersearch will search back 200+ days but if you don' have giganews, you're not going to be able to download files that old because your newshost doesn't store them that long.

http://www.giganews.com/

Giganews will let you set up a trial account so you can see how you like it before you subscribe. I've been an unlimitedd subscriber of giganews for multiple years. You could try the silver package and see how long it lasts you. Nothing bad happens if you max it out. You just can't download any more until you renew your sub. That's the best thing about their lower plans. You can pay early to refresh your sub if you run out of GB and your new month starts from that day on. (ex: 1st of month is when you originally subscribed for monthly service. You max out on the 20th. You can pay on the 20th to refresh your sub and your new month starting date will be the 20th of each month. (or you can just let it sit idle until the 1st and start downloading again)

hopefully you're familiar with par files, etc. Newsleecher has this ability built in buy I use the old QuickPar app to handle any files that are incomplete (a rarity on giganews....other newshosts will probably not be as complete)

par files are only needed if one of your downloaded files are incomplete.

Example: you download ten 50mb rar files. One of the files is incomplete and you only got 36mb of the file.

download par files that total at least 14mb (one par or multiple pars that add up to at least that much) make sure they are in the same directory.

doubleclick on one of the par files and it will magically repair the incomplete file or files. It's the most awesome utility in existence and the closest thing to voodoo magic there is.

with newsleecher, you don't need anything else for par's...

open the repair + extract tab and turn on all the checkboxes... when you queue something, queue up the .par and some of the par set... it will automatically repair if necessary, and extract everything for you.

love newsleecher!

It's still useful to have another par / rar tool. It's very rare, but I do occasionally run across an archive that newsleecher's R&R won't handle for whatever reason.

I mentioned that Newsleecher does the par work automatically (4th post on this thread) but I like to do it myself!

It's rare I need to use it these days.

Just remember that you don't have to download all the par files. There can be a lot of them. Sometimes half a gig on DL DVD images. Newsleecher highlights files it thinks are incomplete in pink when you're searching so you'll have an idea of how many pars you need to download (if any). Newsleecher also is kind enough to save all incomplete files in all CAPS so you can check that way as well. It's rare but possible that Newsleecher/Supersearch will report a file as complete but it ends up not being so. I usually check over the files after a large download before starting to unrar.

Note: Newsleecher uses Giganews for its searches so if you're using a lessor newshosting service, you may have more incompletes than is reported. Important safety tip!

Is it a new feature in the latest beta to automatically pause par2 files when added to the queue? If it is, I haven't noticed it before. Before I noticed this option (under Download>Leech Tweaks in the setup dialog), I usually just didn't add par2 files unless I needed them. I like this feature since I don't have to manually pause stuff when I open a .nzb file. It automatically deletes them from the queue if R&E doesn't need the pars.

Someone give me a bag to breath in!!!! I'm hyperventilating!11!1

Newsleecher 4.0 beta is out for registered users:
We've decided to release a few unofficial previews of NewsLeecher v4.0, before making an official beta release.

There are many smaller additions and changes in these previews, compared what's in NewsLeecher v3.9x. But the one improvement that really stands out, is that NewsLeecher v4.0 now fully supports article collections (also known as 'article combines' or 'article threadings' to some) for binary articles. This new feature will collect similar articles (like all .RAR files, .PAR2 files, etc) of a fileset, and make it a single entry in the NewsLeecher listviews, resulting in much better overview when browsing articles.

Besides better overview, the collections feature also brings some positive side effects. It is now possible to browse groups containing hundreds of millions of headers on an average computer, without consuming too much RAM. Also, the article cache files in NewsLeecher v4 now consumes tens of times less diskspace than the v3.9x series did.

The first preview can be downloaded from there:
http://www.newsleecher.com/nl_ufr_01.exe

Before installing, please note that:

1.
This is an early preview. It still contains lots of bugs, memory leaks and features which aren't hooked up yet. Now you're warned!

2.
It is only available NewsLeecher customers who currently have a valid NewsLeecher license.

Also it is highly recommended that you make a backup of your current NewsLeecher settings before installing, or that you setup NewsLeecher v4 to use another disk folder for settings.
I wouldn't recommend grabbing it yet but at least they're making some headway.

We have some good news and some bad news for all SuperSearch subscribers.

The good news is that we have, with immediate effect, just bumped the retention of the 'General' SuperSearch search category to 370 days!

The bad news is that no usenet provider currently offer that much retention, so you wont be able to leech every article indexed by SuperSearch. But that should change soon, as many premium usenet providers are bumping retention at the moment.

Note that you might have to restart NewsLeecher to be able to set the SuperSearch 'max days' filter to more than 200 days.

Also, we're working on bumping the retention for the 'Adult' SuperSearch category aswell.
Nice : ) especially the adult part because they skimped on that side of things.

I hadn't been using the automated Repair/Extract part of Newsleecher but since finally getting the latest Newsleecher 4 b5 (beta 7 out now), I've been loving it. Having all the rars/pars condensed into a sigle expandable thread makes browsing the movie newsgroups so much nicer. It helps with spam as well because you can browse the Divx newsgroup for example, and easily just browse by looking at the size column, looking for 700,000+ KB sizes. It makes downloading 1,000,000+ headers very easy to manage without having to scroll through so many individual rars/pars, etc. Same with the 60 thread etc.

I held off from 4.0 because i didn't use the automated repair/extract and didn't want to open all the thread to remove the pars. No idea why I waited on that. Repair/Extract and the threaded groups in 4.0 are working great.

Just remember, 4.0 database isn't compatible with 3.0 and you will lose your history. I went ahead and installed 4.0 separately just in case. if you have a lot of groups you keep up on, it sucks losing the history but just deal with it. Not hard to catch up. The only reasonit sucked for me is that I fell behind on some image groups so it was nice having my last downloaded files in the history.

I finally got around to cancelling my Newsleecher subscription. I haven't used it in literally a year and was paying $4 a month for nothing.

Usenet just for the most part is a trash dump. Nearly real-time DMCA removals along with the large number of spam and obfuscated articles, not to mention password protected files, just made it pointless for me. Supposedly the newest version of NL helps out with obfuscated stuff but I never got around to trying that as my usenet server account was no longer active.

It was good while it lasted! It just became more mainstream and that's never a good thing when you're trying to keep on the downlow.

ouch! That was a long time to let that subscription continue!

I rarely use usenet over the past several years. Newsleecher is free these days and I can use the search feature so I'm not sure what the $4/month was for. What I do is buy 1TB of data (as opposed to monthly) from a usenet service. It's really cheap, like $20 I think for 1TB and I have as long as I want to use that 1TB which lasts a really long time for me since I get most of my movies/shows elsewhere. So when I do need to get something off of usenet, I just crank up Newsleecher and search for it, or download all the headers for a particular group.

I can't remember at the moment which usenet provider I bought the 1TB from but Newsleecher works with them all.

NL is free but if you want SuperSearch or whatever there is a fee. $4 is the "Client Plus" plan which gets you:

Unlimited NewsLeecher Software Access (Free anyway so not sure why they list this.. Just to look like you're getting more value I guess)
Unlimited SuperSearch Premium Search Service Access
Unlimited SuperLeech Download Automation Access

It's probably been over 2 years since I've really used Usenet. I should have cancelled long ago but I was lazy. That's why in general I don't like recurring plans that autocharge your credit card. They know you're going to be lazy and not cancel. Luckily it was just a one button step to cancel. The hardest part was figuring out my login info.
