Revamp of a classic - Grilled Cheese

Post by Bubba Grizz »

I make a pretty decent Grilled Cheese sandwich. It isn't art by a long shot but it is your standard tasty melty cheese buttery sandwich.

What twists would you make to it? Keep in mind that these are being served to kids under 7 years old.

Ketchup on the inside. Maybe pickle slices too! Not sure I've ever tried that though. Been many many years since I had GCS.

After I butter the slices, I s p r i n k l e italian seasoning on the buttered side.

Occasionally, some tomato slices inside is nice.

My Uncle used to own a pretty popular bar in Minneapolis. There most popular sandwich was a grilled cheese sandwich with 7 different types of cheese in the sandwich.

My wife puts sliced salami in her grilled cheese. Put a Vlasic Kosher dill pickle on the side and some salty chips and I am in heaven!

I use habanero white cheddar cheese in mine. If I'm feeling cocky I may add bacon to it. I usually always sub out the chips for a delicious bowl of soup.

You really shouldn't be feeling cocky and cooking at the same time. I can't imagine that is sanitary.

I like beer when I have a grilled cheese. My daughter likes them cut into triangle pieces.

Sorry, it's grilled cheese. Not much to add (except differnt types of cheese, once you add meat, it's no longer technically a grilled "cheese" sandwich. It's just a grilled sandwich.

Although grilled ham and cheese is the win.

Today I made a grilled cheese from some leftover Meunster & sourdough and decided to try a little Thai sweet chili sauce on it. OMG, it was perfect! Awesome balance of sweet, spicy & salty. Recommended grilled cheese condiment!

I always make a really boring grilled cheese. I just use our standard italian white bread, american and a tomato slice. Almost always have tomato soup as well as the dipping is a fantastic combo and in that age group, simple is probably best.
As an aside, what stinks is that the tomatoes have been awful this year. My herbs and eggplants have been doing OK, but my cucumbers and tomatoes have been awful. I put in regular plants as well as topsy turveys. I am actually still getting a lot of tomatoes from the topsy turveys, but the bottoms were all getting brown. We've been able to use only 4 or 5 so far and have thrown out at least 20 so far. Has anybody had any luck w/ tomatoes this year?

My grandparents got bones with tomatoes this year too... too much moisture, the ones in the garden all rotted before ripening. They had some next to the house under an awning, those were fine.

I call this my "triple decker"

3 slices of bread (white)
2 slices of any cheese (altho i just use primarily american) yellow? ~
tunafish (allready mixed up with mayo)

Butter 1 side of bread, set in a pan butter side down of course, add 2 slices of said cheese, then another slice of bread on top, then spread the tuna on top of that then add 3rd slice of bread buttered side up..

Grill like you would a "toasted cheese" sammy

Enjoy with a cup of Tomato soup...

Jebus is happy..

That's cool Jar, you basically make a tuna melt(stacked instead of open-faced) which is a Jersey diner and one of my favorites.

You can do a lot with grilled cheese, but what I'd recommend is to simply try adding different cheeses. There is an endless variety of flavor and texture when it comes to cheese and pretty much all of them can be thrown in with your normal sandwich. I've tried dozens of different cheeses, and while some are better than others, they generally all rock. It's hard to go wrong with melty cheese and buttery, crispy bread.

I love to make one with cheddar and crumbled gorgonzola on a hearty whole grain bread. Accompanied by a tomato soup of your liking.

"American Cheese"?

"American Vaguely Cheese-like Processed Dairy Product"!

Btw - grated cheddar-romano-emmenthaler mix in a bowl, pour sriracha over, let sit for 20 minutes or so, then pop it in your grilled cheese!

Fry it in some rosemary laced olive oil, instead of butter.

My comment was more about 'white America' than it was about cheese.
