Stop-and-frisk policy ruled unconstitutional

Post by Aabidano »

Astounded that stop and frisk has lasted this long. Beyond the fairness (probably) imposed by the chest mounted cameras noted below, I'm not sure how you could possibly perform searches w/o evidence or suspicion of a crime without profiling of some sort.

...the policy be altered so that stops are based on reasonable suspicion and in a racially neutral manner.
And how do you visibly do this? Cops are where the crime is.
In a pilot project, NYPD patrol officers in five precincts -- one per borough -- must wear video cameras.
Similar to dash-cams, chest mounted cameras might go a long way towards making things more equitable. Cops might be much less likely to repeatedly abuse Erkel when they know it's being recorded.

And similarly those dash cams seem to malfunction a lot more when the citizen has a complaint than when the officer does.

Make turning off/obscuring the camera a job threatening offense? Locally they can turn off the sound but not the camera itself in the patrol car. As seen when a drunk city manager was found asleep at an intersection recently.

NYC police unions are already protesting the idea. Police another areas have bought them themselves after seeing a fellow officer cleared of a complaint due to video/audio of an indecent.
