Kim Dotcom

Post by Winnow »

Kim Dotcom cracks me up.

tweets from Dotcom:
Wow. I have never seen anything like this. From 0 to 10 Gigabit bandwidth utilization within 10 minutes.
Exactly a year to the day the U.S. government forced the shutdown of popular file-sharing site Megaupload, its eccentric founder has launched a new internet hosting service called Mega.

The site allows subscribers to share, access and store files, but incorporates several layers of encryption technology that sidesteps potential copyright issues that plagued its predecessor, Megaupload.

The heavily hyped launch of Mega drew intense traffic minutes after it went live Saturday, overloading the site for hours. On Twitter, founder Kim Dotcom said Mega had registered 100,000 users in less than one hour and suggested it is the fastest growing start-up in Internet history.

“Site is extremely busy,” Dotcom tweeted. “Currently thousands of user registrations PER MINUTE.”

The site is a follow-up to Megaupload, which boasted hundreds of millions of users when it was shut down in January 2012. The U.S. accused Megaupload and sister sites of being a vessel for pirated files.

Mega is laden with encryption techniques which experts say avoid copyright or piracy issues.

The encryption of a file such as a video, document or song happens on the user's computer, and Mega's employees do not have access to the encryption code, effectively removing them from any responsibility if copyrighted material is shared.

When confirming an account has been created, users get the following message: “Your 2048-bit RSA public / private key pair is now being created. To strengthen the key, we have collected entropy from your mouse movements and keystroke timings.”

Mega has been registered in New Zealand, putting it out of reach of U.S. federal law jurisdiction.

Dotcom and three of his partners were arrested in January 2012 and briefly imprisoned. They face extradition to the U.S. on various conspiracy charges, some related to copyright infringement.

Dotcom has said Mega will provide users with 50 GB of free storage.

Kim Dotcom is still facing charges and an attempt to extradite him to the U.S.

Even so, he still has the balls to post this on his new file hosting website with a message directed at the MPAA saying "Lets Talk"

Image

This guy is entertaining at the the very least.

From Wiki, here's his early "criminal" activities:
As a teenager, Schmitz acquired a reputation in his native Germany after being convicted of bypassing the security of NASA, the Pentagon and Citibank under the name of Kimble – based on the character of Dr Richard Kimble in the long running television programme The Fugitive.[12] He also hacked corporate PBX systems in the United States and said he was selling the access codes at $200 a pop, bragging that "every PBX is an open door to me."[30]

In 1994, he was arrested by German police for trafficking in stolen phone calling card numbers. He was held in custody for a month, released and arrested again on additional hacking charges shortly afterwards. He was eventually convicted of 11 counts of computer fraud, 10 counts of data espionage, and an assortment of other charges. He received a two-year suspended sentence – because he was under age at the time the crimes were committed.[30] The judge in the case said the court viewed his actions as "youthful foolishness."[15]

In 2001, Schmitz bought €375,000 worth of shares of the nearly bankrupt company LetsBuyIt.com and subsequently announced his intention to invest €50 million in the company.[31] The announcement caused the share value of LetsBuyIt.com to jump[32] and Schmitz cashed out, making a profit of €1.5 million. One commentator suggested that Schmitz may have been ignorant of the legal ramifications of what he had done since insider trading was not made a crime in Germany until 1995,[30] and until 2002 prosecutors also had to prove the accused had criminal intent.[33]

Schmitz moved to Thailand to avoid investigation[12] where he was subsequently arrested on behalf of German authorities.[15] In response he allegedly pretended to kill himself online posting a message on his website that from now on he wished to be known as "His Royal Highness King Kimble the First, Ruler of the Kimpire".[15] He was deported back to Germany where he pleaded guilty to embezzlement in November 2003 and, after five months in jail awaiting trial, again received a suspended sentence (of 20 months).[33] After avoiding a prison sentence for a second time, he left Germany and moved to Hong Kong in late 2003.[12]

Schmitz found Hong Kong to his liking and registered Kimpire Limited in December 2003, soon after moving there. He set up a network of interlinked companies, including Trendax which was claimed to be an artificial intelligence-driven hedge fund delivering an annual return of at least 25%.[34] However, Trendax was never registered with Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission and the company was legally not allowed to accept investments or to conduct trades.[20] Dotcom was subsequently convicted for failing to disclose his shareholding to the Securities and Futures Commission, and was fined 8000 Hong Kong dollars.[26]
"bypassing the security of NASA, the Pentagon and Citibank under the name of Kimble"

No wonder the Feds are after him. He's a smart dude. No college education. He may look like a clown and have a bazillion whacky pictures on the net but he's crafty.

He has an interesting history, probably tailor made for a future movie.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Dotcom

He's only 39 but doesn't have the healthiest appearance, 6' 7" 290, (great if he was an offensive lineman though) so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Image

He seems happy with his wife

Image

You'd think he might want to tone things down a bit now that he looks pretty settled in.

I was finally able to create an account today (couldn't even get to the site yesterday). Seems pretty solid as another free 50GB in cloud storage with perhaps the best protection (no google drive data mining) with the encryption keys. You may lose your files at some point but they won't easily be decrypted by anyone.

Toss in some pedephilia and retarded myopia about Arizona sports teams and this guy could BE winnow. But seriously, funny or not, this is not a guy fighting the system. This is a blatant dick waving software pirate making money off of other people's work. Its assholes like this that make the cost of entertainment media for honest people go up.

Oh, a fat joke. Never heard one of those before.

Of course, being fat is legal. Pirating shit and rubbing one out to jap kiddy naughty tenticle porn is probably less so. Go ahead and idolize this douchebag, if it makes you happy. At some point, with the amount of crap you steal, you will get busted and no amount of daddies money is going to keep the RIAA from fucking you over. That will be a fun conversation when they go over the contents of your confiscated RAID drives.

But lets say that neither you, nor your equally attention whoring idol, ever get busted for piracy. You contribute nothing to society as a whole. In fact, the relentless piracy drives the cost up for legitimate honest purchasers of content. Just another exhibit of selfish behavior on your part, I guess. The only difference is this asshole you linked does some public crazy to try and play his bullshit off. Not buying it from him any more than I am buying it from you. Of course the real question I would like you to answer is what do you think would happen if everyone were a selfish thieving dick like you? To the media and computer game industry specifically, I mean.

Thanks chubs. There's only one cool fat dude and it isn't you. Can you even see or reach your dick?

Don't see where I said I idolized the guy in question. I said he was entertaining and what happens over the next few months regarding his extradition and new service should be interesting. It's not like I want to be fat like you/Dotcom and die way early due to being enormous. An eventual movie about Kim Dotcom would be more interesting than you finding a long lost cherished painted orc that popped out of one of your rolls of fat.

Pedo jokes are the last resort for those that can't think of anything else. At least it takes any consideration for you being a fat piece of shit off the table. Keep eating. I hope Dotcom outlives you.

As someone who pretty much buys most things these days. I really don't think piracy drives up costs for "legitimate honest purchasers of content". Most people who pirate shit would not have bought it even if they were able to so in most cases, but not all obviously, it's not like it's a lost sale.

This. I buy a lot of what I get, tv/movies being the major exception, and as much as I like the shows I watch, there is no fucking chance I'd pay what HBO and Showtime shows cost on dvd/blu ray.

Meh, Game of Thrones is cheap compared to Star Trek:TNG, especially when you think it made it's money back 20 years ago and probably had 1/10th the budget, and I'm still tempted to buy the Blurays as they come out... (strangely they're cheaper in Australia than the US, that never happens)

You guys are nuts if you think this sort of shit does not impact price point. Lets just look at computer games, as one segment. At the bare minimum, modern games have to develop some form of DRM and usually have legal counsel on retainer going after these chuckleheads. That money has to come from somewhere. And for every honest person who pays for the game and every theiving dick who doesn't, there a ton of people who are either too lazy/inept/fearful to be bothered trying to pirate it who pay retail. For those people, remove any incentive to pay retail and there is a lot more piracy going on, similar to the early days of PC gaming. Just remember, every time Steam requires online connectivity, D3 has to talk to Blizzard to play single player, and every fucking DRM that gums up your machine, its because some asshole like Winnow thought they were too good to pay for someone elses honest work and effort. In the days of Demos, the bullshit excuse of "I am just trying it out" does not even fly anymore. Pure selfish thievery, no matter how you want to dress it up.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. You still don't get it. I pay for the games I like. I pay full price, unlike a lot of the bargain hunters on this forum so each game I buy is like three games that most of the 19.95 crowd buy here. If I was unable to hack the games I wouldn't buy them anyway, it's not going to give the industry any more money. The reverse is true. I have downloaded several games that I then went out and bought after they impressed me. Gaming companies get more money from me due to pirating.

I really don't care about my PS3, whether it gets banned or not. My 360 was banned and I bought another one because I do buy games. I buy a lot of PC games, mostly MMOs. Bottom line is you're wrong.

I bet you love to fantasize about the total number of pirated games and think that's actually what the industry is losing out on. So wrong. So clueless.

Don't care about bargain hunters, I'm just saying I pay for new games when they come out at full price.

I suppose it just depends on if they care about total revenue or units sold. Comparing new to bargain bin, it's about 3X the price.

I don't think I've ever pirated a game in my life, definitely not a console game. That being said Joce, I think you're overestimating the effect piracy actually HAS to have on games. I personally think companies use it as more of an excuse for raising the price on something totally disproportionate to what the piracy costs them.

Not that that makes you any less right as far as it indirectly contributing to price, but the corporations are contributing equally by milking it, IMO.

The last game I pirated was Red Alert 2 around 2000. I'll be honest though, if I was still poor I would pirate the shit out of video games. Now I just stick to porn and music, both of which stream and I barely put forth the effort to actually que up and DL either of those anymore. I must be getting old or something!

You're probably right. The game companies probably appreciate me buying the games at full price more than bargain hunters since their make or break decisions on a game come well before the bargain bin pricing occurs.

As part of a (brief) rant on Twitter today about the dangers of using web services that are based in the United States, Mega founder Kim Dotcom said the service will expand "in the coming years" beyond cloud storage to offer secure email, web chat, voice, video, and "mobile" (emphasis his) products. Naturally, no details have been offered beyond the single tweet teasing the new features, but from a series of messages on Twitter it's clear that the focus is on privacy. The tease came after Dotcom advised his followers not to use US-based web services, like Gmail, Skype, and iCloud, claiming that they have to "provide (by law) secret & untraceable NSA backdoors to all your data." The expanded web services would most certainly be based in New Zealand, as Mega is currently, and Dotcom called the country "a safe haven for companies competing with insecure US providers."

Such an expansion would mean much work lies ahead for the Mega team: Mega has already pledged to address security concerns in its current product, and Dotcom previously gave a quick peek at a new film service, MegaMovie, which is presumably in the works. Beyond Dotcom's tease today, he also revealed that users can now pay for Mega's pro tiers using Bitcoin through official reseller Bitvoucher, allowing customers to pay while avoiding the potential privacy concerns of using a service like PayPal
Sounds promising.

Online Music Piracy Doesn’t Hurt Sales, European Commission Finds

http://www.scribd.com/doc/131005609/JRC79605

A new study by The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies, which is part of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, tackled this question in a unique way. With data from more than 16,000 European Internet users they determined what the effect was of people’s access to pirate sites on visits to online music stores.

The results are now published in a paper titled “Digital Music Consumption on the Internet: Evidence from Clickstream Data,” and the researchers found that overall, piracy has a positive effect on music sales.

“It seems that the majority of the music that is consumed illegally by the individuals in our sample would not have been purchased if illegal downloading websites were not available to them,” they write.

In addition, the researchers are also the first to find that free and legal streaming websites don’t cannibalize legal music purchases.

“The complementary effect of online streaming is found to be somewhat larger, suggesting a stimulating effect of this activity on the sales of digital music,” they comment.

Most of the effects were found by comparing people’s visits to “pirate” websites and legal music stores. After controlling for interest in music, the researchers found that visits to pirate websites are positively linked to visits to legal music stores.

“If this estimate is given a causal interpretation, it means that clicks on legal purchase websites would have been 2 percent lower in the absence of illegal downloading websites,” the researchers write.

The effect of legal streaming services on visits to music stores is even greater, and estimated at 7 percent. So more free streaming is linked to more visits to music stores. The report notes that their data doesn’t cover visits to bricks and mortar stores

HBO: Game of Thrones Piracy is a Compliment, Doesn’t Hurt Sales

Last month the director of Game of Thrones admitted something that his paymasters had HBO might have avoided. Huge online piracy doesn’t hurt the show, he said, and in fact might create benefits by generating cultural buzz. Well check the date if you like folks but the following is absolutely genuine. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo has just announced that not only is the huge piracy a compliment, but the phenomenon hasn’t hurt DVD sales at all.

With a head-spinning 4.3 million downloads per episode, Game of Thrones became the most-pirated TV show on the Internet last year.

These figures understandably caused much debate, but left show director David Petrarca quite unruffled. During a panel discussion at the University of Western Australia the 47-year-old said that shows like Game of Thrones thrive on “cultural buzz” and benefit from the social commentary they generate. Piracy, he said, helps to oil those wheels.

But Petrarca wasn’t the only show associate with the impression that piracy might have its benefits. Just a couple of weeks later and the show’s actors were weighing in, with Rose Leslie, who plays Ygritte, describing it as a plus.

“I don’t think HBO will be too happy, but yes, one way or another that’s a huge compliment. Not just to me but to the show as a whole,” she said.

With Season 3 of the smash-hit series getting underway last night, HBO have also commented on the piracy situation but in a quite unexpected way. Rather than come out guns blazing they actually agree with Leslie – piracy is indeed a form of flattery.

“I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but it is a compliment of sorts,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo told EW. “[Piracy is] something that comes along with having a wildly successful show on a subscription network.”

For HBO to publicly admit that piracy is even a partial positive comes as quite a surprise, but it becomes even more interesting when Lombardo talks about its effect on revenue streams.

Last month Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the actor who plays Jaime Lannister in the show, said that although people watch the show online, he hoped they would still go out and buy the DVD or Blu-ray. And guess what? According to HBO, they do.

“The demand is there,” Lombardo said. “And it certainly didn’t negatively impact the DVD sales.”

These comments from HBO are significant and underline what many observers have suspected all along. If you have a great product you should expect piracy, but you can also count on large numbers of people to support your efforts financially too. Every viewer – paid or unpaid – is a potential ambassador for the show and therefore a valuable part of the marketing cycle.

It’s too early to say whether Episode 1 of Season 3 will break last year’s download stats but the signs are already there. Last night’s show rocketed straight to the top of The Pirate Bay’s charts for most active torrent, driving way ahead of its nearest competitor, episode 16 of season 3 of The Walking Dead.

So, if they don't produce crap content people who would've bought the DVD will do so anyway, despite refusing to pay for HBO itself?

Would think in that scenario they're still making less money as they don't get much/any ad revenue from DVD sales?

It could be some people don't want HBO if they are only interested in one show. I guess they could always subscribe to HBO for 3 months then drop it until next season but that sounds annoying. Or maybe they prefer to have it on DVD for bonus content or whatever. Or even some people might not have cable but rely on Netflix or something which doesn't carry HBO shows. There are numerous reasons why someone might "refuse to pay for HBO itself". Not commenting on the validity of such reasons just stating that they exist.

Yeah I don't have cable , let alone HBO/SHO. There is no way I would pay over $100/month to watch the 5 or 6 tv shows total that I watch. And the prices for a season of these shows on DVD/blu ray is also out of the question. They aren't losing money from me, if I had no other option than to pay, I'd read more.

"Doesn't hurt sales" isn't at all the same as "doesn't impact revenue". Wonder what percentage of the people who pirate episodes from wherever watch a lot of (cough) premium TV content?

Subscribing to HBO for instance all year to watch one show with it's limited number of new episodes seems dumb. Of course someone who plops their ass in front a TV for any significant amount of time\day while ripping off the content....

Someone who pirates GoT shows it to a room full of people who would have never seen it otherwise. Two of those people then buy the DVD set. Pirate = profit.
