Yes it's a concern but right now it's still more a news event than anything else. I wonder how much advertising rates have increased...
thats a kinda complicated subject aab. here's what i think would most likely happen.

the two rates would be separated since its a separate indecent from your typically seasonal flu deaths. kinda like car fatalities and car suicides. both involve cars in the death but differently. but could still be lumped together in a general statistic if you don't control for a certain events. IE death from car accident and death from car suicide are both lumped together in the same general term of car fatalities but if you remove/control for one, your death rate would change based upon that factor.

but who knows /shrug

So far this year, it is estimated that 36,000 people died from the seasonal flu.

I based my prediction on the descriptions of each level on the WHO website. I will be surprised and a little worried if they move to level 6.

I'm on my phone atm, but you can do a google search for "who level" and there is a description for each level and a chart showing the current phase.

I had to go to the hospital today to do lung tests. I have some damage from my pnuemonia early this year, and they wanted to see how bad it was. I had to wait part of the time for the test in the emergency room and watching people sitting there with masks on made me laugh.

I asked the girl checking me in if they had a bunch of "Potential swine flu victims" and she laughed and said the media is blowing it way out of proportion and if anything they are causing people with real issues to have to wait longer for treatment.

As someone already pointed out, the common seasonal flu has been far more deadly. This is why the media sucks, no one will call them out on this when it fades away like the bird flu.

The media let us know that there is a brand new form of death that is spread amongst humans and doesn't yet have a vaccine. For that, I am glad. It is the individual's fault for being a sheep and blowing it out of proportion by wearing masks, or especially by refraining from buying pork. The media could take a better position on the issue, but anybody that doesn't know the media will use fear to get ratings probably at one point demanded a yellow Lance Armstrong bracelet that they wore for a week.

More people will die of the flu today then all the people who died of swine flu this week and guess what? Their is no cure for the flu. The loss of life in Mexico is tragic, but is more an indictment of their health care services. The media could just report this, but instead jumped on it and sunk their fangs into it like it was their last meal. They are hoping for more death and at least a few more weeks of this story and the best way to do it is to scare the crap out of people.

More people will die of the flu today then all the people who died of swine flu this week
36k flu releated deaths from 30-50 million reported cases.
Roughly one in eleven hundred.
The vast majority are infants and elderly.

8 swine flu deaths from 146 reported cases.
Roughly one in eighteen.

Swine flu is now reported as being spread by human to human contact.

If the swine flu becomes as widespread as the common flu (30-50 million reported cases), there could potentially be 2.2 million deaths.

THAT is why you should be concerned.

For most people, there is a fine line between concern and panic though, and the media isn't doing much to highlight the facts.

People here in Houston are freaking out because the 1st death in the US due to swine flu was here. Nevermind that the toddler that died was travelling from Mexico and had only been transferred to Houston from Brownsville just before he/she died. The facts are there, but people only read headlines and then run around screaming OH MY GOD WE ARE GOING TO DIE!

It's also no coincidence that the people freaking out on my Facebook home page are Republicans. All my liberal friends are keeping their heads cool.

It helps if you keep in mind the US media are a bunch of money grubbing leeches. Facts don't sell advertising time very well...
Many of us frequently lambaste the media for their scare tactics. For a change, CNN got it right today, putting the flu scare in proportion.

> Regular flu has killed thousands since January

> There had been no confirmed deaths in the United States related to
> swine flu as of [`until' would now be correct] Tuesday afternoon. But
> another virus had killed thousands of people since January and is
> expected to keep killing hundreds of people every week for the rest of the year.

>
> [...] But even if there are swine-flu deaths outside Mexico -- and
> medical experts say there very well may be -- the virus would have a
> long way to go to match the roughly 36,000 deaths that seasonal
> influenza causes in the United States each year. [...]

I don't know why we're talking about Wall Street in a swine flu thread.
NEW YORK – April was Wall Street's best month in nine years — offering some of the most powerful evidence yet that maybe, just maybe, the economy is about to begin a turnaround.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index, considered the most reliable measure of the broader market, climbed 9.4 percent in April, its best performance since March 2000, the peak of the dot-com bubble. The Dow Jones industrial average shot up 7.4 percent in April, on top of a 7.7 percent gain in March.

That's more than a relief for investors — it's a potential economic indicator, because the stock market tends to get back on its feet before the economy does. In downturns over the past 60 years, the S&P hit bottom an average of four months before a recession ended and about nine months before unemployment hit its peak.

yeah reddit is a nice site.

Pretty much a load of media hyped blown out of proportion bullshit. More people die of malaria in a day than what we have seen of H1n1 so far put together.

Still, obviously any chance of dying is a bit eep. But really, is anyone here under any illusion that the media is simply, as usual, filling airtime for the sake of scaremongering and attracting viewers?

You have more chance of being run over by a lottery ticket than you do of contracting swine flu at the moment. That of course might well change, but that will become evident when more than 1 in every 42 million start dying from it.

Wow, what an idiot. H1N1 may not be the inevitable mass killing pandemic expected, but taking the attitude of sitting around and waiting for more people to die is moronic. You're dumber than I thought. Next you'll be saying that more people die in car crashes each day so we shouldn't be worrying about a new flu virus.

I hope all Irish think like you. The rest of the world will grab some popcorn and watch Ireland's population die off. "Hey Micky! Half of my neighbors are dead from this flu thing....ah that's nothing compared to the black plague back in the day! Don't worry about it mate! Have another warm beer!"

No, I didn't. There are 2200 REPORTED cases, but medical experts think the infected number of people in Mexico could be significantly larger.

In the US there was 109 cases I believe and 1 death. That is a death rate of .00971, hardly a deathbringer. I have seen several medical opinions that say this swine flu is no more or less deadly then the regular flu.

I never said ignore the problem, take precautions. I merely said it was overblown. Texas canceled all high school games, a high school not far from here canceled their prom. I just had lung tests because of the pneumonia I had all year. The death toll of Pneumonia is 40-70K people a year and the death rate is much higher then swine flu, but it is an old and boring problem.

I am not a medical expert, far from it, but I found this and it echoes my thoughts exactly.
All this affects the apparent significance of the numbers involved. Of the 110 million people in Mexico, 1,600 cases have been reported, with about 100 deaths—suggesting a mortality rate of 6 percent. This is almost certainly bad math, as the total case count almost certainly ignores thousands or tens of thousands of other cases that have taken milder courses like those in the United States. It's perfectly conceivable Mexico has actually had 10,000 or 100,000 cases—or even 1 million cases. If so, then the kill rate would be not 6 percent but 1 percent (given 10,000 cases) or 0.1 percent (given 100,000 cases).* If it's 1 million cases (quite possible if this thing really spreads easily) then the mortality rate is just 1 in 10,000. Meanwhile, because the United States is on high alert—and can take special note of people with recent travel to Mexico—it is probably picking up a fairly high percentage of its cases, including milder instances that would have gone unnoticed in Mexico a few weeks ago.

If it hasn't infected that many thousands of people in Mexico, on the other hand, that would suggest that, though it may be deadly, it doesn't spread as readily as we fear. To hear of multiple tourist groups coming down with the virus suggests it spreads like wildfire. But it also ignores the virtual certainty that many tourists and other travelers have been exposed without getting ill.

That's not to be too sanguine. For one thing, it's also possible that Mexico is missing, undercounting, or badly underreporting deaths. But if this virus really does spread rapidly, its kill rate is fairly low; and if its kill rate is anywhere near as high as the 100-out-of-1,600 suggests, then it doesn't spread very easily.
When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. I'm 40 now, I don't think that anymore, because I found out it doesn't f--king work. One has to go through that. For the people who even bother to go through that, most assholes just accept what it is anyway and get on with it." - John Lennon

Oh and if the influenza death rate was 1 in 109, there would be roughly 370000 flu related deaths every year... thats 1000% higher than it is.

There are 2200 REPORTED cases
According to the WHO:
As of 05/05/2009 18:00 GMT+1 there have been 658 reported cases worldwide.

I believe the official death count has also been lowered significantly though.

16 reported deaths.

A drop from the 1 in 18 earlier this week, but it's still roughly 1 in 40.
