Only 80's Videos

Post by Winnow »

Can't have enough music threads! Since I like the 80's and don't want to stink up the "Add a cool song" thread with too much 80's. This thread is for posting your favorite 80's songs. Maybe try to find the less known, forgotten songs, one hit wonders, etc.

Kicking it off with Big Country!

In a Big Country

Great song and pretty good video for the 80's. Happy ending to video but sad to hear the lead singer has passed on. You learn stuff in the YouTube comments sometimes!
So take that look out of here, it doesn't fit you.
Because it's happened doesn't mean you've been discarded.
Pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming.
Cry out for everything you ever might have wanted.
I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered
But you can't stay here with every single hope you had shattered.

I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert,
But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime.

And in a big country, dreams stay with you,
Like a lover's voice, fires the mountainside..
Stay alive..

I'd say "Melt With You" but now that it's used to sell crappy tacos, I can't in good conscience post that. Here's one that's always been a favorite of mine instead.

"Dear God" by XTC

Here's a bonus song that gets stuck in my head sometimes and won't go away for days or weeks...

Surprise Bonus Song (not a rick roll)

Melt with you is one of the all time greats. You can't discard it because of the lame present day overuse of it.

Nice surprise song.

Another one hitter:

Gary Numan - Cars

Bonus song:

M - Pop Muzik

Note: Pop Muzik was released in 1979 but check the video. If that's not ushering in the 80's I don't know what is!

Edit: Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes is a great song nneenaK

Mike & The Mechanics - The Living Years this song still gets to me

Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight A classic. Can't not include it.

A-Ha - Take On Me You can't have a list of 80s videos and not include this either.

Also include basically any Peter Gabriel video from 'So' although I'll go with Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush - Don't Give Up Two great tastes that go great together.

Excellent choices aslanna. Some meaningful lyrics songs there.

Ah-Ha deserves to be on any all time top ten list of music videos.

Peeps are picking quality deep songs while I'm going with the more pop'ish part of the 80's so far!

Here's another along those lines:

Howard Jones - New Song
I dont wanna be hip and cool
I dont wanna play by the rules
Not under the thumb of the cynical few
Or laden down by the doom crew

Dont crack up
Bend your brain
See both sides
Throw off your mental chains

That video was fairly frequent on MTV at the time. I think. I remember seeing it a lot. I was living in Florida.
Released in 1988, the album gave the Banshees their first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S.: "Peek-a-Boo" climbed to number fifty-three. "Peek-a-Boo," which is entirely backmasked (the band had to learn to play the song in reverse) also was the first number-one on Billboard magazine's Modern Rock Tracks chart. The Banshees claim it to be their masterpiece
Doesn't sound too obscure to me.

But my point is are you familiar with many of their songs? aside from the one song peek a boo, her works are really not widely known. Just saying it's a shame that she didn't really catch on as much as she should have. Was very talanted but oh well such is life.

Considering they're a brit band, and include former members such as Robert Smith of The Cure (temporarily filling in for umm... whats his name... after he left the band), they're hardly anything but an LA phenomenon. I heard them plenty in Nebraska and here in Alabama way back when. I remember I had tickets to see them in the mid 80's here in Birmingham, but ended up not going for some reason. That was when they had a bit of pop success thanks to MTV, but they'd been getting air time on the UA college station for years before then. I'd known about them probably for 8+ years by the time that Peek-a-boo charted (I never was overly fond of that song, incidentally).

They weren't mainstream, so I'm sure they weren't known by top-40 types prior to their commercial success, but anyone that was into alt/post-punk/new-wave stuff in the 80's should have been plenty familiar with them.

well its cool to know she was getting some playtime other then LA then. I must have been meeting the wrong people. I can be pretty sure that out of most cities that LA does know more about her and her songs due to KROQ giving her a lot of play.

Agreed, not mainstream - but very widely known.

No Station here in Columbus Ohio played them until CD101 came online, but they were very popular at Ohio State University Clubs.

Saying "her" or "she" isn't really right, btw... Siouxsie and the Banshees is a band. Siouxsie Sioux is a person. They may have gotten more radio play in LA, but that's not really that important. Punk/Post-Punk/New Wave stuff wasn't really radio fodder in 99% of the radio markets in this country. Here any sort of music that wasn't country, jesusy, soft rock, easy listening, classic rock, R&B/Soul, oldies or top-40 was relegated to a few hours on dedicated genre shows on a handful of stations. They had a big following, none the less.

Edit to add: Peek-a-boo came out in 88, which is later than I thought... When they played in Birmingham was at least 2 or 3 years before that in 85 or 86.

I understand they were a band i say she cause its easier to type. It might be a little bit important because KROQ has been known to propel a lot of good music into the mainstream, IE Pet Shop Boys etc. While Siousxie wasnt mainstream she had a good following in LA since she was played since the early 80's so thats why I say a lot of people my age growing up in LA knew most of her stuff.

The Pet Shop Boys owe their success to KROQ? Are you kidding me?

I'm not saying that KROQ wasn't an influential station way back when, and they may be responsible for exposing a lot of music to millions of people in SoCal, but lets not get carried away here.

I guess I didn't know this song was that old. It still gets me pumped even after all these years. That entire album was intense (The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste).

On the plus side, I think I was about 14 when that came out, which means I was a little more on the intense/innovative side of music back then if I was listening to this stuff.

As I said, KROQ may have helped expose them to a lot of people in SoCal, but that song was taking off without them. After it originally tanked, and was completely reworked, the song was charting in Europe (without KROQ's help), and was getting a lot of airplay in the states as a result (MTV should get a lot of credit here too). Obviously, KROQ helped expose a lot of bands to a bigger audience and was/is an influential station, but lets not overstate their impact.

Luckily, no. Though I did a three year stint in the area a few years back that I'm still trying to forget. I don't know that they were "big" in Puerto Rico and Miami where I grew up, but they had some airtime. The Glove and The Creatures I think were/are a little more obscure. I want to say Cities in Dust was a better known single than Peek-a-Boo. It was in my neck of the woods anyway.

Here's another one: Theme from S'Express
http://youtube.com/watch?v=JP_2qjzj73Y

When I first saw the group name (in '88, I was 11) I giggled.

edit: I just confirmed that Siouxsie got airtime in Uruguay in the 80's too (he recognized Cities in Dust quicker than Peek-a-Boo)

Here's a few:

Voice of the Beehive, "I Say Nothing"

Every time I watch this video (and many of their others, frankly), I can't help but wonder how may pairs of shoes those girls go through with all their stomping around. Zowie!

Rubber Rodeo, "Anywhere With You"

I'm sure I've posted this before, but not in the 80s link below, so it's fair game.

The Jam, "Beat Surrentder"

I'm a big Jam fan. Too bad they have nothing but crappy quality video of them on YouTube. :\

And then I was going to post a bunch of other songs but I saw they were already on another thread ... so I'll just steal them from that 'Son of 80's Videos' thread:
Ogbar wrote:
Heaven 17 - "Let Me Go"
The English Beat - "Save it for Later"
The Church - "Under the Milky Way"
Bow Wow Wow - "Do You Want to Hold Me"
Donald Fagen - "New Frontier"
Kim Wilde - "Kids in America"
Thomas Dolby - "Hyperactive" (edit: new link)
Wall of Voodoo - "Mexican Radio"
Golden Earring - "Twilight Zone"
'Til Tuesday - "Voices Carry"
Romeo Void - "Never Say Never"
Franky Goes to Hollywood - "Relax"
ABC - "Be Near Me"
Wang Chung - "Everyone Have Fun Tonight"
The Human League - "(Keep Feeling) Fascination"
The Go-go's - "Head Over Heels" - my favorite Go-go's song
Devo - "Peek-A-Boo"
Toto - "Stranger in Town" - one of the best videos made in the '80s .... and yes, that is Brad Dourif, who played Grima Wormtongue in the LotR movies (edit: new link)
David Bowie - "Blue Jean"
Robert Palmer - "Simply Irresistible" Separated at birth: Robert Palmer and Greg Kinear?
The Motels - "Suddenly Last Summer"
The Sugarcubes - "Motorcrash"
The Clash - "This is Radio Clash" - great song!
New Order - "Perfect Kiss" - a bit long, but very very cool

Dug around for a few more:

Haircut 100 - Love Plus One
Another one hit wonder from the 80's.

Icicle Works - Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)
Great song. You'll like it/remember it when you hear it. (after the main beat kicks in)

Jackson Browne - Lawyers in Love

Rick James - Super Freak

Because you can't leave out the Super Freak!

Tori Amos - The Big Picture - Yes, before Little Earthquakes there was this. The only video from the Y Kant Tori Read album. She's disowned the album but I actually listen to it now and then. It's definite 80s poppiness but you can hear the talent buried in there on a lot of the songs.

Didn't realize this came out in the 80's.

Enya - Orinoco Flow

Tribute to same song by Celtic Woman: (good audio just not quite sync'd)

Celtic Woman - Orinoco Flow

Since Enya remixes her voice so many times, I thought the second video interesting to see all the people singing it live.

I saw the Alarm at UCLA when the simulcasted it on MTV, was an amazing show. My girlfriend (at the time) and I got there the night before so we were 5th row at the show. One of the best shows I have ever seen.
