It's amazing to watch. I've seen several players do this type of playing, but it seems very rare. I would like to know more about it, but don't know where to start. Any help would be appreciated.
Does this method of playing have a name?

I saw this video and other similar ones in the past and learned a few songs using similar playing techniques. I wouldn't call it a different technique (no I don't know officially), just an innovative way of playing. People have been drumming on the guitar for a while. This guy's really good at making it sound really good.
The songs I taught myself were all youtube videos. That's where you start.

Aside from the drum playing on the guitar. Most of what he's doing would be called two handed tapping, which is common among shredders. It is less common in acoustic guitar music mostly because it takes quite a bit more hand strength.

Search Andy McKee on YouTube if you want to see more of his work. He's pretty damn good!
His cover of Toto's Africa is amazing!

I've heard / seen it referred to as "percussive fingerstyle," but I think that's more of a description than a proper name.

Reminds me of the stuff Kaki King does: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbJnwk3GBiM

I believe i've heard that as a (micro)genre name for that type of music. You'd probably need both two accurately describe the techniques present. It's probably the technical name of the actual drumming parts as well.Xatrei wrote:I've heard / seen it referred to as "percussive fingerstyle," but I think that's more of a description than a proper name.
She's amazingly talented, and afaik the authority on this style of playing. She does a good bit of work on other types of guitars as well (electric and classical).Ogbar wrote:Reminds me of the stuff Kaki King does: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbJnwk3GBiM

I could never play with finger nails like that, I always hated the way it felt on the strings.

Looks like the style Michael Hedges used. May he Rest in Peace.
Edit: Some other musicians who use a similar style are Leo Kottke, Martin Sexton, and Keller Williams. Keller Williams also uses a technique called Looping, where he records a riff, and repeats it. He does this with several instruments and then jams with it. It's quite entertaining.
