Mutant X

Post by Winnow »

This series ran in the early 00's and was an effort by Marvel to produce a mutant show that didn't include FOX. FOX eventually sued, stating that Mutant X was too close to X-Men which they had exclusive rights to.

I had no idea this series existed. It ran three years (66 episodes) These were hour long (44 min) shows.

I've watched 10 episodes so far. It's an amazingly, incredibly....below average show. The acting is horrible as are some of the stunts. The plots are whacky. The villain is dull (guy in white wig with purple tinted glasses). The CGI is bad (understandable for the time/budget). Tons of close up facial drama pauses. Lots of trench coats.
Even though the series had high ratings and was renewed for a fourth season, it was abruptly canceled in 2004 after the dismantling of Fireworks Entertainment, one of the show's production companies.
Several years ago a company called Genomex carried out a series of illegal and immoral experiments on human subjects, forever altering The DNA of any children they might have, to make them mutations from the norm. Now many of those children have grown up, and it has become increasingly difficult for the rest of the world to ignore The New Mutants in their midst. Genomex, under the direction of Mason Eckhart, one of the original scientists, seeks to exploit its creations. Others seek to protect them. A New Mutant Underground has sprung up, and one of the most prominent cells in that organization is Mutant X, a team of powerful New Mutants led by Adam Kane, head biogeneticist of The Genomex scientists who participated in the experiments which have altered the world forever.
...but I can't stop watching. Help! Once I start watching a series, I tend to watch them all and that would be 56 more episodes. Does anyone remember this series? Does it get any better?

Image

It's saving grace is that there's usually hot looking mutants and guest mutants, doing lots of high leg kicks, flipping and tumbling around the scenes unnecessarily. Picture an easy objective you could probably just run to, but all sorts of acrobatics and use of powers ensue for drama.
New Mutants are categorized into four different groups, depending on their abilities: Elementals, Ferals, Moleculars, and Psionics.

* Elementals are New Mutants with the ability to channel, project, and control different types of energies through their bodies. Different types of Elementals include:

o Electricals, who can absorb and channel electricity;
o Thermals, who can absorb and control fire or cold;Boogahz
o Sonics, who can control sound waves;
o Chemicals, who can project chemical substances, such as acid or toxin, from their bodies;Tegellan
o Botanicals, who can control and manipulate plants;
o and the extremely rare Geologicals, who can control earth.

* Ferals are New Mutants with a combination of animal and human DNA, allowing them to use the abilities of the animal DNA within them. Different types of Ferals include:

o Feline, who possess cat, tiger, lion, puma, leopard, lynx, cougar, or cheetah DNA;
o Ursines, who possess bear DNA;
o Canines, who possess dog, wolf, coyote, jackal, or fox DNA;
o Reptuses, who possess lizard, snake, alligator, crocodile, or turtle DNA; Zygar_ Cthulhukin
o Porcines, who possess pig, boar, or hog DNA;
o Bovines, who possess cattle, buffalo, bison, or yak DNA;
o Cervines, who possess deer DNA;
o Amphibians, who possess frog, toad, salamander, or newt DNA;
o Piscis, who possess fish DNA;
o Insectums, who possess insect or arachnid DNA; this subclass is rare Dregor Thule
o and Aves, who possess bird DNA.

* Moleculars are New Mutants who manipulate their body structure and molecular density in various ways. Some Moleculars possess more than one ability. Moleculars' abilities include:

o Intangibility, the ability to pass through solid objects;Animalor
o Imperviousness, the ability to increase their mass so they are invulnerable to projectile weapons;
o Invisibility, the ability to project an aura that renders them invisible.
o Propulsive, the ability to move at high speeds;
o Gravitative, the ability to manipulate gravity;
o Chromatic, the ability to change colour, light, and shades like a chameleon, Keverian FireCry
o Stasis Suspension, the ability to slow down time;
o Replication, the ability to duplicate solid objects;
o Elasticity, the ability to change their shape or size; this subclass is rare
o Teleportation, the ability to teleport anywhere they desire;
o and Regeneration, the ability to heal and repair tissues and limbs.

* Psionics are New Mutants who have heightened mental abilities. Different types of Psyonics include:

o Telepaths, who can read and alter other people's thoughts; Winnow
o Telekinetics, who can move solid objects with their minds;
o Tele-Empaths, who can feel and, to various degrees, manipulate the emotions of others;
o Tele-Cybers, who can mentally connect with machines and control them;Bubba Grizz
o Precognitives, who are able to receive visions;
o Illusionists, who can create and project illusions to other people;
o Astrals, who can project their consciousness elsewhere;
o Pain Synthesizers, who can project pain into others;
o and Multi-Dimensionals, who can create dimensions.
You can pick one New Mutant ability and only one. You can't pick something that someone already picked earlier in the thread so get your powers quick! If you dilly dally too long you'll get stuck with a power like: (Piscis, who possess fish DNA) (LARP meeting info to follow!) Any complaints and I'll pick your power for you!

I'll go with:

Winnow: Telepaths, who can read and alter other people's thoughts

You get: Reptuses, who possess lizard, snake, alligator, crocodile, or turtle DNA

I'm going to use up a lot of the Feral class mutations for those that don't pick!

I'm now on episode 12 of Season One and its gotten steadily worse. This series was filmed in Canada as were some of the X-Men movies. What's up with that?

Canada has a really healthy tv/movie industry. A lot of quality programs are filmed up here.. and some real stinkers. And yes, many mutants!

done!

I'll control the people, you control the machines! muahahaha!

A series like Mutant X makes you really appreciate the talents of someone like Joss Whedon. Whedon is able to keep you interested and surprised with lots of plot twists and turns. No matter how goofy the subject, character development makes or brakes a TV series. In Mutant X, there is so little character development and absolutely no plot twists. On top of that, the main characters die left and right and are miraculously brought back to life with no explanation...one of the big ones is electro dude zapping medical equipment that somehow manages to fix any issue..."she's dying!...."don't worry, I'll just electro bolt whatever medical device she's hooked up to and she'll be fine! (this actually works for any electronic equipment not functioning). Another vampire type plot has an unkillable vampire that finally dies to electro dude's bolts with no explanation...and then the two women that were just killed by the vamp spring back to life with zero explanation for why.

Joss needs to put out another series after the Avengers movie!

I actually watched the entire series while it was streaming on Netflix a while back. I think I rated it 3 stars, mainly because I wasn't expecting too much from it. It was also pretty different from most of the "superhero" shows I had run across previously.

I remember watching the pilot of then when it first aired. I watched maybe 3-4 episodes, deemed it stupid and never watched it again.

The Xavier-character is the same guy that played Lex Luthor on Lois and Clark back in the 90's

I'm now on episode 21of season one and have decided to download Season Two. The show isn't that good but it makes an excellent filler for my side screen off to the side while I'm working or doing other things on my PC. I checked TV.COM to see how the viewer ratings were and for the first six or so episodes of Season two, they are rated constantly higher than average (for Mutant X episodes) I've never done this before, but if it gets too bad, I may actually pick and choose episodes based on TV.COM's viewer ratings. I base this off of BSG and Firefly ratings of episodes that I'm very familiar with. The masses do tend to rate individual episodes pretty well when compared to other episodes of the same series. That would be a last ditch effort to salvage some worth out of my ~1 minute per episode giganews download speeds.

BTW, I've grabbed a few series off giganews that aren't on Nexflix (Big Bang Theory, Breaking Bad, etc). Sucks to be Canadian as I can download their 25GB cap in under two hours with 50Mbps. When it comes to something like a HD TV series that aren't on Netflix (that's bandwidth as well you know!), just one season can punk a Cannuck out of their monthly allotted bytes. Any way you slice it, that 25 GB cap which is 10X less that your average American Cable provider, blows. I don't mean to rehash the whole Canadian bandwidth thing but this show was filmed in Canada and there's ton's of TV/Movie show pirating in Canada due to Canada's psycho government that limits the amount of exposure to evil American TV in order to preserve (lol) Canadian culture or some such.

Finished first 42 episodes. 24 more to go. Can't stop now!

Season 2 filmed in 2002 has a few more flat panel displays making things look more techy!

Not bad for budget they had but far from good. Niche interest (X-men/Mutants), good for background show while doing other things. Still amazing what a bolt of electricity can do to fix whatever problem arises.

Mutant X seasons are on the newsgroups posted over a year ago.

Here's a place to get all three seasons plus extras in one spot!

Re: Mutant X

I can't take it anymore.

I made it through 53.5 episodes. I turned it off halfway through episode 54. The first two seasons of 22 episodes apiece we tolerable but at the end of season three came some major cast changes. The telepath, Emma, and the Prof Xavier type character, Adam, left the show to be replaced by one, horrible acting, invisi-girl/dazzler type young leader.

There are levels of badness. Mutant X, to begin with, was on the cusp of unwatchable but these changes, combined with uninteresting, unconnected storylines make me wonder just how the show remained popular enough for a planned 4th season. I'm thinking that FOX started to interfere (Own X-Men TV/Movie rights and Mutant X too similar in their opinion) after season 2 which caused the show to become more of a ghost hunter/suspense show than about the mutants themselves.

I read somewhere that Adam (Prof X) comes back at some point in the third season but it's halfway through and I can't watch anymore to see if it improves.

Not sure what's next. I tend to watch entire runs of shows at once.

The last few series I've watched:

Stargate Universe Season 1
Lost Season 1-5
Dexter 1-3
Breaking Bad Seasons 1-2
Buffy seasons 1-7
Eureka Seasons 1-3
Spartacus Season 1
Big Bang Theory 1-3
Mutant X 2.5 seasons (fail!)

A series has to be pretty bad for me to stop watching!

Some other full seasons sorta recent

The Riches Seasons 1-2
True Blood Seasons 1-2
The Office Seasons 1-4
Battlestar Galactica Seasons 1-4
Deadwood Seasons 1-3
Californication Seasons 1-2
Gossip Girl Season 1-2 (lost track of it after that but it looks like it got worse)
Firefly Season 1
Smallville 1-4-ish (another show that just got too bad to watch)
Rome Seasons 1-2

I'm thinking about giving Weeds a try. Others in consideration Are Supernatural and Sanctuary. All three of which I know nothing about.

Having watched so much of that show and reporting about it has earned you the Psionics power:
