Twilight...

Post by Mak »

..is apparently an awesome movie.

My pseudo-daughter, a huge fan of the books, went to the midnight show early this morning fully expecting to hate it. All she could talk about this morning on the way to school was how great it was and what a great job they did staying true to the book.

So, my .02 worth for those that are interested.

Too often it seems it is the peaceful and innocent who are slaughtered. In this a lesson may be found that it may not be prudential to be either too peaceful or too innocent. One does not survive with wolves by becoming a sheep.

Someone at work was talking about how someone they knew was not letting their daughter go see it because of some rumor of a cult following the movie around. Supposedly they were going to be at every theater recruiting the young to be vampires or something. We were all laughing, but sad for the narrow-minded view of the parents at the same time. I had not even heard of the movie until I left the TV on after watching local news and TMZ came on talking about one of the stars going to Vegas.

My wife likes the books. She wants to go see the movie, but I suggested that was a good one for her to take one of her girlfriends to and I would stay home and watch the kids :P

I hope there's some good vampire action.

From what I've seen the "vampire action" looks rediculous. Oh, and even if it may have been tacked on to the myth in the last century...I like that traditional vampires can't be out in the sun. Not these twilight bloodsuckers though!

The only true vampires were in Lost Boys!

I haven't seen Twilight but I plan to download it. I read a few chapters of the book and listened to a few more via audiobook. The story is about as deep as a post from Nick. Like Hannah Montana or Saved by the Bell, it will hold the attention of teeny boppers but I can't imagine too many adults coming out of the movie highly captivated. While I don't immediately discount the value of movies based on teen books (Harry Potter) for entertainment, this one seemed excessively basic with the typical teen angst of a semi Emo female worrying about her relationship with a guy.

I'll admit I really want to see this movie (loved the books). I made plans with my co-workers (all booksellers) to go see it on opening night. But due to my daughter being born almost 5 weeks early those plans kinda got scrapped. Now that she is home from the NICU and we are settling into our new family life I'm hoping to go see it on Friday (dad will have to watch baby since I can't see him wanting to watch the movie LOL).

The movie was pretty bad.

Special effects were horrendous. Pass on it. It took my six nights to get through because I kept falling asleep.

I just watched the DVD. It wasn't nearly as bad as others have made it out to be. It was a little choppy in delivery, the director had an unhealthy obsession with circeling camera shots (like a close up version of Micheal Bay's Helicopter shots), and I was not feeling any real emotional bond between the 2 lead characters. However, for pure entertainment, there are far worse out there. I'm not going to rush out and read the books or anything like that, but I'll check the sequels out.

I was really bracing myself for the worst. I give it a 7/10. I understand how a teenage girl would think this is the greatest movie ever made.

I shared some observations to my wife about the movie and she was pretty amazed how I honed in on all these little details that she thought were glossed over from the book. I felt rather proud of myself!

I don't regret paying 4 bucks to watch this with my gf, but both of us thought it was pretty bad and that every scene involving romance was beyond cheesy. But it had vampires and somewhat intriguing lore which incorporated Pacific Northwest myth, so I'd give it a 6.5/10.

Also, I've been through Port Angeles and Forks dozens of times and surfed at LaPush a few times as well, so that was kinda fun to see those places portrayed(don't think any of it was actually filmed in those areas tho).

Anyhow...it wasn't as bad as I expected, but I'm glad I didn't see it in theatres.

I'll give this a 1.5/10.

I'd also like to add my astonishment that anyone who isn't a socially handicapped teenage girl who loves to wallow in her own teen-misery while staring teary-eyed at a "My Chemical Romance" poster can see even a tiny bit of quality in this load of sexually discriminating blather.

I understand that the book might be super awesomely written and interesting, but I was completely dumbfounded at this movie and how shitty it was. Every character interaction was awkward and retarded, the plot was non-existent, and the 'love story' was engineered to rot the brain of every teenage girl who saw it. 0/10 garbage.

I never read the books, and I expected a lame teenage emo-fest love story. While it was a bit of that, I genuinely enjoyed it. There are a lot worse movies out there.

The girl who played the lead is not a good actress. Like approaching Keanu Reeves levels of bad.

Nope! I read the books, and they're pretty awful. I've read better stuff in high school creative writing classes. Everyone I've asked who really likes it and is over the age of 15 says, "Well, it's a really great story." Bullshit! Nothing happens for 400 pages then there are another 50 pages of plot.

So the question is how on earth did such an ametaur create such a sensation? Why does she continue to attract more and more fans?

The same reason that Hannah Montana is insanely popular...

But reading isn't as accessible as movies or music. It involves a lot more attention and commitment to read 4 books. Because of that, I cannot easily get behind your logic.

I believe that it came to her in a dream. It's a really easy read, so it's really accessible for tweens and morons. I found it kind of insulting but apparently people love that shit. Then again, I did read all four books.

Most people I've talked to think it's a great love story. The bottom line, I think, is that she created a character that girls who read it really wish they could be. It's every little girls dream to fall in love with a bipolar stalker who watches them sleep!

It sells because it's derivative pap. It is a success because she gave the kids an easily digestible cocktail of ridiculous, "dark" romance that gives the girls a completely unrealistic romantic fantasy where they can cast themselves as the submissive princess while at the same time tapping into a plastic-goth, pseudo-emo trend. It's escapism of the most ridiculous kind and it gives the 13 year old girls an excuse to be broody selfish little bitches because "if Bella can find her happiness like that, so can I".

Yeah, I don't like it. But then I'm getting old.

Netflixed it and watched it last night.

It's really one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. I didn't expect even a "good" movie, but I wasn't prepared for how bad it was. A few times I replayed parts for Eric (who was passing through to/from the kitchen) just to show someone how ridiculous the movie is. I felt it was too bad to not share.

Even my 14-year old self was embarrassed by how corny it was.
