Watchmen

Post by Aslanna »

So... I see that Zack Snyder is wanting $150 million to make Watchmen. Personally I'm not sure that's enough if they want to do it right. Secondly I still have large misgivings that anything other than the original format (comic) can do the story justice.

Also from some of the reviews I've seen for 300 the 'acting' has been harshly criticized as a weak point. Watchmen is a lot more story/character driven than 300. You'll need actual actors and a director that can put it all together.

Anyway if it gets the go-ahead guess we'll find out in 2008 how it all turns out.

If they bring in Keanu Reeves to play the omnipotent blue guy, I'm getting a rifle and killing everyone involved with this project.

Well, as long as they stick to something resembling the original ending, and not Terry Gilliams mutilation, ill be happy :)

Personally I found the watchman comic series a bit overrated. Its not bad but it certainly isnt the be all end all that most comic book people make it out to be.

*Momopi has been banned from the Comics Forum*

Watchmen is a classic as much for the way it was eventually released in Trade Paperbacks as for the story. It did win a Hugo though!

Watchmen was one of the first super hero graphic novels to show up on regular book store shelves. I remember them always being right be all the D&D books in Waldens and B.Dalton's.

I don't blame anyone for not liking a particular story though. For some reason, I can't get into the Dark Knight Returns Graphic Novel although I recognize it as a classic.

Not saying it's not valid, but who owns DC comics again? Who owns Time magazine?

I too was never able to get into Watchmen. It was interesting, but not enough to keep me reading. It must be good though because I know very few people who don't like it.

don't get me wrong, I understand that they were ahead of their time when I was buying them as they were coming out back in the day, but after reading them back then and again recently it just doesnt grip me like Sandman or the phoenix saga from 101 to 138. I regonize how important watchmen were to the comic world and how cool dr manhatten and Rorschach was but as a story over the 12 books it just fell short for me personally. I still consider sandman to be the best run of stories in comic history.

The trailer for the movie, about a world where betighted crime fighting heroes have been outlawed, will be showing in US cinemas in front of The Dark Knight. But for those outside the US, or who haven't snapped up a ticket for Batman's first day, you can see the trailer exclusively online here at Empire on Friday morning from 5am GMT (or 9pm PST on Thursday). Trust us, it's worth getting up early for.

Actually, it will work later on, the site is getting SO hammered, i got the site open right now and can see my cached copy, but a world exclusive trailer on something like this meant major hammering, even their main page runs slow as hell now :)
Give it some time, and give them time to find more servers to make up for the gross underestimation of comic book geeks :)

And i read the 1989 Terry Gilliam script/fuckup, and i had my doubts about this. From watching this trailer the ONLY thing i still fear is that they might not include the Comedians relationship issues, every other fear i had was gone in 2 minutes of trailer.

But try it later, will work again when it slows down some :)

It's not that it's getting hammered.
The site loads fine and fast for me.
They fucked up by putting it up like 12 hours too early.

I watched a documentary about the Watchman movie. They mentioned the colors they were working with. Typically hero movies have the primary colors red green and blue but Watchman uses green, orange, etc in their sets.

It looked like a lot of thought was going into the movie and that the director was staying as true to the original graphic novel as possible.

This should be good.

I've never read the Watchman so won't be all snobby about it because I won't know any better.

You can view the "Crew Journal" video here: It's the Dave Gibbons one.

Zack Snyder is a stylized genius. I get the same feeling watching the Watchman trailer as I did watching the first 300 trailer. After watching the Dawn of the Dead remake, I've had my eye on this guy and he's sure as hell not dissappointing.

That's a very nice trailer. I can't wait to see it on the Imax now! I think the next terminator film will be attached to Dark Knight as well?

I actually got dissapointed over the Spirit trailer, i was not really sure what i was expecting, but it did'nt deliver for me.
I guess i was hoping for the Spirit world of Eisner, but i saw more of sexy women, which is good, but it just didn't feel right, I saw Octopus face, which as far as i recall was never shows in the comic.
I will probably see it, but after the trailer i dont really feel for it as i did before.

Never heard of this comic, but I saw the big trailer at Batman last night, and I thought it was blah. Maybe you have to be connected to the storyline in the comic, but it didn't intrigue me in the slightest.

The trailer was definietly made first for the fan of the story and those familiar with it in my opinion. It basically shows most of the main characters. Only thing I had an issue with is it makes it seem like it's a superhero action movie. While that's sorta the case most of them aren't superheroes as such and the story isn't nonstop action. So those not familiar with it might have different expectations going in.

Looking forward to the Mars sequence.

Interesting article.
I hope they still keep the spirit of the climax, or at least dont pull a stunt like Terry Gilliams script did, i read that ending, and that would have ruined the movie ;)

The article says it was changed, not taken out.
[Show]
My guess is that the "alien" will be engineered to just wreak havoc and destroy a good portion of New York instead of the whole psychic power-wave deal. Story-wise, it would still accomplish Veidt's goal, and it would be more plausible for a lot of viewers accustomed to monsters that go on a physical rampage instead of a death-induced telepathic rampage. That's my guess anyway. If it's not that, I imagine it will simply be something less "far out" that will accomplish the same thing - a whole lot of dead people in New York.
I'm fucking excited. That trailer is magnificent. Whatever they change about the climax, I can't imagine it will be too drastic, because so far nearly everything is a frame by frame rendition of the comic. What they removed was the Black Freighter (to be released separately straight-to-DVD as an animated film), but that was more supplementary than integral to the plot anyway. Plus, the word is that it will be incorporated into the movie in a likely-to-be-5-hours-long extended dvd release, which I would definitely add to my collection.

My only "complaint" really is their portrayal of Veidt. The actor just doesn't make me think of some amazing self-made millionaire with a perfect physique that inspires the respect and admiration of damn near everyone. Plus, Veidt's supposed to be in his mid-40s isn't he? He looks to be in his 20s on the cover of Entertainment.

Per Kevin Smith's blog...
Kevin Smith wrote:I saw “Watchmen.” It’s fucking astounding. The Non-Disclosure Agreement I signed prevents me from saying much, but I can spout the following with complete joygasmic enthusiasm: Snyder and Co. have pulled it off.

Remember that feeling of watching “Sin City” on the big screen and being blown away by what a faithful translation of the source material it was, in terms of both content and visuals? Triple that, and you’ll come close to watching “Watchmen.” Even Alan Moore might be surprised at how close the movie is to the book. March can’t come soon enough.

Seven more months to go. Hope this doesn't delay it any:
Fox is Watching the Watchmen - Get sued!

Watchmen has been trying to make its way to the big screen for a LONG time. Now we are in the utopian age of superhero films so it is finally happening. But Fox doesn’t want it to.

Fox filed to challenge the WB’s production of the DC property (also owned by the WB) since they owned the rights to once upon a time. Now that no one was willing to make it WB did it themselves and Fox wants a piece of that pie.

Cinematical says:

Nikke Finke reports that a federal judge has denied to dismiss 20th Century Fox’s legal claim on Watchmen. You may remember that they filed a lawsuit back in February claiming that their rights to the DC property still held. They seek an injunction to prevent Warner Bros’ adaptation of Watchmen from being released at all.
And at this point, that federal judge agrees with them.
