Personal name cards?
Was talking to a guy in Poland this morning, he mentioned that he'd just had a new batch of personal name cards made up. Similar to a business card but with his personal infoz on it.
Anyone ever hear of this in current use? Recall reading of something similar being used but thought it had fallen out of fashion 100+ years ago.

I know a few people who do this. They're usually (a) self-important hipster assholes or (b) retired folks.
EDIT: I should clarify that I refer to the upscale urban types of hipsters (ie, the "I'm an economist with an eclectic fashion style and I run a music review blog on the side" type) rather than the slummin' hipsters (ie, the "I have an enormous mustache and a bunch of tattoos and sling drinks at a shitty hipster bar" type).

You just described a rather large segment of my town.Sueven wrote:I know a few people who do this. They're usually (a) self-important hipster assholes or (b) retired folks.

I make a conscious effort not to lump folks together and dislike them as a group, with hipsters I feel OK about it though. I'm sure one or two of them aren't douche-bags but...Canelek wrote:You just described a rather large segment of my town.
I had the '70s porn star mustache going for years, just as well I shaved it off a while back

I find that it is acceptable to make fun of the hipster community, albeit, it is a segmented one:
- Bicycle Messenger Guy
- Skinny Jeans Guy
- Fake eyeglasses guy/gal
- Militant Vegan (redundant?)
- Hello Kitty Hipster
- iDouche
- EXTREME LOCAL ORGANIC PRODUCTZ!
Feed the homeless, not the hipsters!

iDouche is most likely to have a personal name card. The type of hipster with such a card is the type to say "oh, my primary interest is design."

But does it have a watermark?

Those types it's funny what they actually do to pay the bills, like all the "actors" in Hollywood and "songwriters" in Nashville.Sueven wrote:iDouche is most likely to have a personal name card. The type of hipster with such a card is the type to say "oh, my primary interest is design."

It's actually a very big deal in China to present your card to associates. The card is more of a personal card than a business card just like you're talking about. It was the first time I came across it but I knew to expect it before going.

Re: Personal name cards?
If I had my own card, it would be totally awesome, with the word AWESOME embossed, as well as depictions of me kicking all sorts of ass. Maybe a big lightning bolt too.

The subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh my God.Xouqoa wrote:But does it have a watermark?

Hadn't heard about the Chinese doing that, the Japanese treat it like an extension of themselves.Chidoro wrote:It's actually a very big deal in China to present your card to associates. Yah, we get mini-etiquette lessons anytime someone has to travel to an Asian office. Business card etiquette is a big part.

I was rolling with the punches as it was my first time there. You lay them out in front of you like you're playing solitaire (but they don't overlap each other) while at meetings.Aabidano wrote:Hadn't heard about the Chinese doing that, the Japanese treat it like an extension of themselves.Chidoro wrote:It's actually a very big deal in China to present your card to associates. Re: Personal name cards?
I've seen parents carry personal cards they hand out at kid gatherings to other parents if their kids happen to hit it off or something. I don't see anything wrong with it. It's easier than writing down a name and number and hoping you remember who they are later. The cards usually have a family picture so you know who they are, their names and a phone number.
