I am a project manager for Alltel. It is a dream job for one holding degrees in Theatre and Journalism. I jab my car keys in my eye every day I walk to my cube.

Upon the birth of my first son, I retired from being a bouncer - which I loved and did for 10 years. Choking out a mouthy 22 year old and having deep conversations from Hoochie Mommas cannot be easily replaced.

My goals in life is to stay employed, die quickly and give my sons a nice chunk of change. Working on all three.

Well...

I used to work in the corrosion engineering dept for Canada's largest independent oil and gas company, doing a bunch of things involving the inspection of operating pipelines and oil and gas processing equipment and quality control on equipment during fabrication. I left after a philosophical disagreement (they fired my boss for telling them that some equipment was unsafe and needed to be shut down, and other stuff was being designed improperly... and replaced him with an incompetant yes-man, so I walked). Since then I do the same thing(s) I was doing as an independent contractor... but not for my old company :p

Ideally I'd like to do my thing for a responsible oil and gas producer, and gain the stability that contracting lacks, but if you know anything about oil and gas, responsible producers are hard to come by (too many damned bean counters in control!).

We bill anywhere from $900-$2000 depending on what I have to do during the overnight stay. Most nights I hook up 2 patients and put em in bed and then sit at the computer for about an hour. Once they fall asleep I get to watch TV all night in the spare bedroom getting up on commercials to make sure wires didn't come out and staying caught up on their progress. Because I have to stay overnight I work 4 ten hour days and have 3 day weekends every week! I love my job. I had no prior experience or training but after a year and a half on the job I can test to become a certified polysomnographer and almost double my pay.

However I hate the company I work for and am searching for a new one. This is the most amoral, greedy, stupid company ever.

A fun note, my spell checker wants to turn polysomnographer into pornographer. Ha!

I'm a full time student at MSU, studying Computer Engineering.

My three most recent jobs (spanning the last 5 or 6 years) have all been in the field of banquet service. I'm the guy that carries that big tray bearing food. I just landed a private catering spot on the roster of a very connected person, so I'll be making some serious money come summer. I love the job and I love that I'm always busy and I love that it's dirty and retail and low-class. It's good money and the experience has been well worth the shitty bosses I've worked under.

I'm a claims rep for one of the top 3 auto insurance companies. I'm the guy that handles everything when you get into an accident. Basically I determine liability, inspect and pay damages to vehicles, evaluate and pay injury claims etc. I just recently got promoted to a more specialized position where I manage the bodyshops that are in our direct repair facility program. Basically I make sure the shops are fixing peoples cars right, getting them done fast and making sure that people are happy with the repairs. Pretty much it's my job now to streamline the repair process as much as possible to make it so that the people involved in the accident don't have to worry about their vehicle. I take care of it all for them.

I gotta say I enjoy it a lot. I do a lot of driving (2-5hrs a day depending on which shops I have to go to). I get to work with some pretty cool people, and I'm out of the office most days. I'm pretty much left to do my own thing as long as I'm getting the work done.

I am the CIO (sounds more important than it is) for a medium sized pizza franchiser based out of the Dallas area. I take care of anything computer related for the franchisees and the corporate office. I am currently building an internal application that we can use to process and handle orders.

I also own my own company, and created an online ordering application. My first customer is my current employer, and it has worked out really well. We're on track to do over $1m in sales online this year, which is pretty awesome I think. :) Now I just need to find the time to do some redesign on the application so I can make it even better, but I haven't had much luck lately getting any of this mystical "free time".

I am a LPN, and work in a nursing home. I plan on going back to school next year and start working on my BSN, MTSU has an accelerated LPN to BSN program, so I can do in 2 years what would otherwise take 3-4. After that, I'm toying with the idea of MSN and being a nurse practitioner, but we shall see. I eventually want to work in OB, and get into womens health, but for now the elderly are keeping me amused while I get my 'green nurse' stage out of the way.

Get that BSN, my wife got hers last year and the pay difference is dramatic. The sad thing is the only real difference in duties is in IV's and medicine, otherwise they seem to do the same work for half the pay.

I'm a Statistical Analyst for the State of Colorado Health Care Policy and Financing office, which is primarily responsible for Medicaid and Child Health Plan Plus enrollments and payments. We work with the providers and constituents to make sure the people who are not covered by private insurance, and are qualified for state government assistance, have adequate health insurance. We assist state government with legislative research for proposed bills. Also, any ad hoc research projects that get approved get handed to our department for processing. I've only been in this job for a week, but have worked as a data analyst/administrator for about 3 years in health care.

I'm thinking about going back to school to get a PhD in Epidemiology.

I'm currently a student. I'm studying International Business at UT Arlington.

I've had a crapton of jobs, couple careers, lived all over the damn place...I decided it was time to get a degree. It's going well.

I don't really have a dream job anymore...call it disillusionment if that's even a word. Any job that I don't hate, and pays me enough to enjoy my free time is a dream job. I'd rather dream about other aspects of my life than my job/career.

While I am finishing up my double major (fucking finally) I currently have an internship at an accounting firm, basically being a few accountant's bitch. However, it pays 17 an hour (internship, keep in mind) and I think I've kissed enough ass to get a job here after I graduate.

I couldn't agree more. I work to live. I don't live to work. A job/career is simply a means to and end for me. It occupies 40 hours of my life per week and not a second more.

Agreed. Occupying less than 40 hours of your life is even better but the main thing is being able to switch off all thoughts of a job, as if you were turning off a light bulb, when the work day is over. Zero stress about your job while not at work, and while at work for that matter, holds a lot of weight to me when deciding between jobs. That's hard to do in certain occupations like being a doctor, dentist, lawyer, commission sales with quotas, etc. Those jobs rank lower (IMO), for the same pay than ones you can forget about. Of course, that all changes if you love your job.

Maximum free time to pursue your interests while generating enough money to support your hobbies/lifestyle, is my idea of a good job. I have no problem turning down promotions/job offers depending on what they are. Making more money doesn't always equal more satisfaction in your life. I turned down my boss's position for that reason. It was more pay (not by a whole lot) but a lot more stress. I like my 10-15 hours a week of real work. Now when my boss comes into my office I can say, "Not right now (Lumbergh), I'm kind of busy (as I type this post), I'm going to have to ask you to come back another time."

That said, you can also take another approach and dedicate your life to your job. I envy the fiction novelists that are able to turn their imaginations into paychecks, some musicians, scientists passionate about their work, and certain businessmen (Gates, and even that bastard Jobs) that take their vision and make it a reality. There are many more good jobs as well. (some people like to work with retards, social workers, etc.)

Maximizing free time/minimizing stress and being passionate about your job are both good approaches if you must work.

Leaving work at work is always something I have believed as well, but lately I have had a hard time doing that.

It could be because I am doing QA (by myself) for a product that makes my company 20+ million a year and I'm only making around 40k... Actually, yeah that's mostly it. But I'm looking for another job right now so I can go back to leaving work at work, like it should be.

That honestly is how I know it's time to move on to a new job, when you start to think (not positive things) about work often while you aren't there, it's time to find something new.

Thats the truth... Ive been in all sorts of high level commission sales jobs... most of them had me committing between 60-100hrs a week to be as successful as I wanted to be....

This past year I started selling timeshares... and I love it... 35-40hrs a week, basically unlimited vacation time... great hours... and the money now is better than my last job at 100hrs a week. Also, when I leave work, I walk away... no worries, no real follow up... just a pure sales job :)

I work with a lot of alzheimers and dementia patients, so a lot of what I do is mental health related, but as far as being a full fledged psych nurse, hell no, I have my hands full keeping my own sanity in check.

Basically I am an entry level nurse, Licensed practical nurse, there are some things I can't do, like IV push meds etc. There's 5 different types of Registered Nurse running around out there, the associates degree, bachelors, masters, PhD, and diploma, although most diploma RN's are old school, not many places do that anymore. The difference between associates and bachelors is money and if you can get in the right program, about 1 year of school, and bachelors and masters, is money, and masters can go and get their advanced practice and be a nurse practitioner, and bascially do what a doctor does. PhD nurses work in research mostly from what I've understood.

And that, was Nursing degrees 101.

After 1 year in the field you can also go to school and become a Nurse Anethetis (I think that is the official term). My wife is considering it. They start at about 120K a year in California and go up from there. The other ones that make big bucks are the ones they use on the medivac's.

I'm not saying what I do, because as of next Sunday I'll be laid off. Well, I guess I'll say... I work for a major global electrical company making arrestors (well, I make the disks that go inside the arrestors, then test them) for power companies to install in the various places that they install them (on top of transformers, on subway cars, in power stations, etc). Because our business is highly dependent on new housing and storm related rebuilding, business is down about 25% from last year, which was down about 30% from 2005. Sooo, if anyone is in a postition to commission a new housing development in Florida (or another hurricane prone area), you would be doing me a great service by doubling (or quadrupling) your grid connections.

On a side note, Zver, your avatar may be improved by reversing the angle, although it is very nice the way it is. :)

Tyek wrote:Hey Al,

I work for a company that makes arresters and insulators among other things and our business is way down in California. I was up 8% last year and this year my sales are sitting about 72% and I am doing better then most my competitors. I am hoping it turns around soon, but I do not see it happening for at least another year. Sorry about losing your job, if you are willing to relocate I might be able to get you a job interview. Were you an engineer? Sales? Installer?
Labor (or labour, depending on your location), but I might as well have been an engineer, since they would ask us all about the processes and then not do anything productive. I made more improvements to the process than our lead engineer did this past year. Our downturn in sales is mostly due to our market. We primarily sell to south eastern US power companies to boost their inventory for the storm season. They all made big purchases about the time I was hired (shortly after Katrina and friends), and then never used the inventory, and still have not used the inventory. Pretty much all we make anymore is arrestors, so when that market goes down it all goes to shit.

I appreciate the offer, and I'll keep it in mind, but for now I'm happy to ride out the storm (or lack there-of). I really like what I'm doing, the people are (for the most part) great, and I really couldn't ask for a lower stress job. My biggest problem is whether I'm going to be stuck working with an idiot when I go in that day. Well, second biggest problem, right now the biggest is the lack of work.

And as a bonus, my boss golfs with my dad! That's not how I got hired, I didn't even know till I'd been there about 6 months, but it doesn't hurt my chances of getting called back early for a *special project* one bit. :)

Out of curiosity, who do you work for? I work for Cooper Power Systems, formerly McGraw, formerly Edison (I don't think it gets much more "formerly" than Edison in the power sector... maybe Franklin?)

Out of curiosity, who do you work for? I work for Cooper Power Systems, formerly McGraw, formerly Edison (I don't think it gets much more "formerly" than Edison in the power sector... maybe Franklin?)

You're one of our primary competitors. In fact, we just lost a distribution disk contract to you guys a couple of weeks ago.

Cool thread.
I work as an artist at Sony Pictures Imageworks. This is my first feature film venture. Previously I work in TV (The Jim Henson Company) and video games (2Ksports).
At Sony, im working on a film called "Cloudy, with a Chance of Meatballs". Just another fully CG comedy (think Shrek, Nemo, etc). I cant really say much about the film yet, but its coming along nicely. The look is very unique, and while I dont think the cast has been publicly announced, I will say that there are some awesome cult actors doing some voices. As well, of course, as the normal A listers.

This is so fucking cool. It's always been interesting following Sparty's path to world domination, quite a change from the Little Rico days!

When is the Little Rico full length CG animation film?

I started a print sourcing company in Hong Kong 3 years ago with my savings and 20 years of experience in the printing field. The company has done well since being opened and this year will turn over apprx 25 million USD. I then opened a childrens book company, a greeting card company, a bar (in Hong Kong) and a Beauty facial house spa (also in Hong Kong).

All of the above are doing well thankfully. I have offices in Hong Kong, Toronto and Shanghai. Very busy time right now but have hired some key people over the past year and hope it will free up some time.

I'm a Solutions Leader in the Outsourcing Division of a Data management Corporation. I own the Technical and Financial aspects of large Outsourcing Deals. Considering my degree is in Psych and Biology most of my early career was Social Work and Counseling type things. In the 90s was a Network & UNIX Engineer and Manager for a startup ISP then designed one of the Large wireless providers Internet Network.

Didn't think I would ever be doing financial things but it's been a great learning experience. However since I'm more of a "people" person than anything I truly missing having a group to lead or manage. I thrive on seeing others succeed, it's what boosts my ego that I could play a part in it.

While my current job, which I've been doing for 6 years now is great for learning and I know will help me be a much better executive someday... I'm ready for that day. :) I've always lived by lead or get out of the way... I'm ready for some people to get out of the way, lol.

JFC, do you spend all your time forwarding memos to Scott Adams to use as material, or do you use this to create them all?

I'm currently a student in my final semester at TCI College here in my hometown of NYC. My major is HVAC(heating, ventilation, airconditioning and refrigeration) engineering which basically consists of installation and servicing of heating and airconditioning apps for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. It's an exciting, and pretty lucrative field to get into especially since there is always a high demand for techs. It's also a very extensive field which would allow me many different options as to how i wanna grow in this industry. I could be service/installation tech, blue print designer, salesman etc etc. It's not the easiest trade to get into however, since OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of the work consists of troubleshooting different units which requires you to know OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS about pressure/temperature, heat transfer in btu's, heat load calculations, and all this other snazzy stuff that i wont get into hehe. some of the classes/teachers i've had almost forced me to jump out of a window, but in the end i like a good challenge so it all works out.
It's also a pretty dangerous field if you don't know what you're doing... nor are the working conditions going to be easy all the time. there are days where you might have to be on the roof of a building fixing a unit under scorching temp in the summer or freezing your butt off in the winter. However, i like working outdoors so i can easily adjust, and time flies by as supposed to my previous desk jobs.

Getting into the HVAC trade was a career change for me since i used to be an insurance salesman for Allstate. It was good for a little while and i made pretty good cash, but once hurricane katrina hit... allstate made quite a few changes that didn't work in my favor so i decided to quit.

Overall, my goal is to make a pretty secure living in the HVAC trade so that i never have to worry about finances. Once that is accomplished i could use my free time and concentrate on my real passion in life which is art and music. I'd love to put out my own work someday, and finally finish and put out a record that i've been working on for some time now.

One day... soon... hopefully =)

I'm an Airframe and Powerplant mechanic for a small aircraft operator doing government work overseas. By day I help maintain our small fleet of Russian Mi-17 helicopters. By night, I don my gear and become crew chief/flight engineer/loadmaster for the evening's flights around the area. We deliver government employees to their remote bases and keep them supplied with stuff. It's an amazing job, although it gets cold as shit in A-stan, especially when crossing some of the mountain ranges. I'm heading out to Iraq in a week. I work two months at a time overseas, then come back home for two months of stateside work out of our airfield where we do overhauls and training and generally relax. The regular pay isn't anything to go crazy about, but it doubles when I go overseas, so that's a big plus.
