Band of Brothers
Fuck all this redneck, butt fucking shit; instead, buy this set. Buy it dont rent it-30 more bucks at costco or sams is money well spent rather than going to blockbuster and getting each episode for $5+(5 discs, 2 episodes per disc).
If you liked Saving Private Ryan, you'll love this.

Visually stunning, storyline is great, and the acting is well done.
I would think my only complaint would be the last 4 episodes...the whole show starts out as Lt. Winter's remembrances...then it goes to other people being the main focus of the episode...this was fine, and still made an awe inspiring series...I am just really grasping for a Con, that's all.
Truly, the show is all pros.
Also, there were different editing and directing staffs for each episode. You can definitely see the differences in styles of filming episode by episode. It is really neat.
The DVD itself has some special features which destroy most other "bonus material". The "Field Manaul" for each episode is neat to go through, as are the biographies of each "participant"...all episode by episode. Very neat.
Ron Livingston, who plays the 2nd lead in the show, also performed a "videography" of the whole "Band of Brothers" experience. It is also fun to watch.
Anyone, I've said enough...just friggen' buy it!

Can be summed up in 2 words.
Best series ever.
The best part is that the entire thing is basically a biography of the people who were there. The interviews with the surviving members of the 101st just really makes you care more about what happens to them. The last DVD alone is worth the price of the boxed set. There is even a gratuitous naked chick shot in one of the discs. =)

I picked up a copy of the boxed set for my mom for Xmas, and couldn't wait to give it to her just so I could borrow it...so I just went out and bought me a copy before Xmas too! I'm glad I did. I had only seen one and a half episodes on HBO, and I was already hooked. I think I have now seen the 10 hour+ set a few times since purchasing it, and I have loved it every time!
I think the nekkid chick scene was in Episode 9!

Best TV ever not least because you can see all $8m+ per episode up on the screen.
The series itself is pure brilliance given greater impact because it really happened.
I recommend reading the book as well and the D-Day one by the same author. Breathtaking illustrations of individual and collective human courage, endurance and inventiveness.

My mother's father fought in the European campaign, was in an artillery regiment that was on Gold beach I believe on D-Day. He didn't like to talk about it much. My father's mother was a jeep driver for the Australian army or some such, I assume in the Pacific campaign. I never met him, so don't know much.

This was the first time you have seen the series? It actually prompted me to read pretty much every book I could find about the European theater....and then the sequel series, The Pacific came out and I read every book I could regarding that theater as well. I would recommend that be your next one.

Re: Band of Brothers
My house had a library in in as I was growing up because my dad was a book collector. I read every single WW2 related book he had, multiple times, from when I was 10yrs old onward. I was able to correct teachers in class in middle school when the subject came up. When my grandfather eventually talked about his experience, I knew the names of every location and battle he talked about. I'm not as knowledgeable about WW1, but I could carry a conversation on it if I had to. There are some podcasts on itunes of first hand accounts and experiences that are great to listen to. I enjoy hearing the stories by the people that lived them.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:This was the first time you have seen the series? Re: Band of Brothers
This series is pretty much the gold standard for cable. The Pacific was good, but I felt that BoB was so fantastic in every aspect.
I ended up buying the bluray version even though I already had the metal-box DVD version. Ron Livingston and Neil McDonough(sp) were so damn great in every episode, not to mention the rest of the cast. It just seemed so "real". Damn fine, damn fine...
I think it would be awesome to do something similar with the Italian/African theater.

Yes. I want to watch The Pacific now, and Band of Brothers again. And again.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:This was the first time you have seen the series?

Re: Band of Brothers
I'm going to watch this series again. It's been awhile and I didn't get to watch it all in on shot.
WW2 was the most amazing war/time period I can think of.
I still recommend the book , Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand in audibook format. The narrator is awesome.
As for World War II, there's nothing like getting it directly from the source. WW2 vets are becoming scarce. My grandfather and great uncle used to tell stories about their experiences in the Pacific (B-24) and in Africa/Europe (Tank) after downing a few beers to loosen them up on the subject. They've both passed since then. If you've got any relatives or other people you know still alive that are WW2 Vets, don't wait to talk to them about it.

Re: Band of Brothers
One of the best parts of BoB is seeing the real surviving(at the time) Easy Company veterans talk about their experiences. Amazing.
Speaking of WWII vets, my grandfather (who passed in 1995) flew 120+ missions over Italy and Africa. he flew both fighters and bombers. Two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and a host of others. Dude was a stud. After the war, he flew a crop duster until he had to retire at 65.
I found out my uncle has a copy of the scrapbook, from pictures of a young Army pilot, to news articles of him flying under a bridge and blowing out local windows, all the way to the front page of the newspaper when the victory in Europe was announced. I am hoping to secure a copy.

Re: Band of Brothers
I would advise you to read "A helmet for my pillow" and one of the books by Eugene Sledge before watching The Pacific. The only downside to that series was they did not really get the backgrounds set like BoB did. I understood much much more after reading the books by the people involved.Spang wrote:Yes.
