FCC approves 'net neutrality' rules

Post by Sargeras »

Although from reading the multiple sources on the net today, both sides of the debate are furious with the loopholes and inconsistencies (ex: "reasonable") in the text that the FCC passed.

Discuss.

"Collision course with congress" is what I read a lot yesterday. Personally, I don't think it's a big deal. I'm a free marketeer on this one.

The Comcrap monopoly specifically and wireline in general aside -

A good chunk of my job is in wireless, if you know how the system works you can see why the carriers are pushing for companies who make billions at a minuscule cost, youtube and other high bandwidth or chatty sites in particular to help foot the bill. They in turn are screaming about it because it impacts their margins.

So specifically on the wireless side you have two choices. Pay much more on your wireless bill in an indirect subsidy of the youtube (etc...) business model, or lower youtube & Co's margins by forcing them to foot the bill to make their content available in a supportable manner on the wireless network.

The squealing about news\micro bloggers is just a distraction, as soon as that happened they'd be in court and backtracking.
