Minecraft
Searched here and couldn't find anything on it.
Ridiculously addictive game - fairly straight forward...you mine, and you craft. You extract blocks and place blocks and make everything that is used. Super simple (8 bit level) graphics, but infinite world size (as you travel it creates new chunks), multiplayer support (with lots of bugs, but still fun). Definitely a creative style game...and literally a sand box in some areas.
http://www.minecraft.net
10 euros or something (less than 15 bucks USD) for everything for life - i think you can check out the single player for free - not entirely sure.
Watch this for an idea of what's going on and how to get started (which also shows mechanics and what not)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylVtj-1Ccgg
The same guy has a 40 some odd episode series of his adventures in it that is fairly entertaining.
Some people have done insane shit like rebuild the Enterprise on a 1:1 scale, or make worlds with 6x the surface area of the earth.
Wiki: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page
Crafting area to see what is creatable: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting
If there is sufficient interest we can get a VV server up and running fairly easily, or pick an existing one - although most have 4-8 person limits.

if you were walking around and you came upon a tulip with tits, would you let it be for the rest of the world to enjoy.. or would you pick it and carry it off to a secluded area to motorboat them?

Re: Minecraft
A friend of mine was telling me about this.
I'd certainly be down to check it out. Not this weekend though--got a Halloween party to set up.

Re: Minecraft
I tried it...a little addictive, but found it to be boring fast

Re: Minecraft
It can get boring unless you have a goal in mind like building a house or a castle or an extensive mine network, in which case I find it highly addictive!
Re: Minecraft
With the new update coming on Sunday - hopefully monsters/players will be able to take damage, cart tracks will work, etc and there will be more of the 'survival' element.

Re: Minecraft
Interesting but why just play with blocks when building in Second Life is so much more detailed while remaining easy to master?
Star Trek Enterprise in SL compared to the blocks above:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sqg_LiGpMOM
Second Life hasn't improved in years but the building tools are more fun to play with than just blocks.
rule #34 is definitely in effect in Second Life!
Here's the basic building tutorial by Pedobear so you can see what you can create quickly even as a beginner:

I still don't get all the rage over this game. Does that mean I'm getting old, or that I just don't get it?

Someone should start a VV server for minecraft. I could always use another server to play on.

Another example of MS not being able to do anything on their own. Just throw money at it and people might start actually buying your shitty console!Microsoft reportedly looking to buy Minecraft developer
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that, according to "a person with knowledge of the matter", Microsoft is in "serious discussions" to buy Mojang, the studio that made smash hit Minecraft.
The deal is reported to be worth a whopping $2 billion, and "could be signed as early as this week".

Re: Minecraft
I can't fucking stand MineCraft. My 2 daughters adore it and they would play it 24/7 if I let them. It's seemingly the one thing that unites every child in their elementary school in some weird way.
Seriously, out of the hundreds upon hundreds of video games I own they choose the only one that I actively cannot stand to fall in love with. Trust me, I've tried playing with them as well as solo. I just don't get it. At all.

Re: Minecraft
I have zero desire to ever try minecraft. I don't know how anyone could enjoy huge blocky graphics. It was cool in the 80's but that was 30-35 years ago.

Will be curious to see if the Vita version sees the light of day.Microsoft announces purchase of Minecraft creator Mojang for $2.5 billion
"At Microsoft, we believe in the power of content to unite people. Minecraft adds diversity to our game portfolio and helps us reach new gamers across multiple platforms. Gaming is the top activity across devices and we see great potential to continue to grow the Minecraft community and nurture the franchise. That is why we plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms — including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC."

Re: Minecraft
PETA launching its own "animal utopia" Minecraft server
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, better known as PETA, are a game-savvy bunch. Over the years they've protested whaling in Assassin's Creed IV and asked gamers to be kind to Zerglings, and they've also made a few games of their own, like Cooking Mama: Mama Kills Animals and Pokemon: Black and Blue, in which players help Pikachu and his pals fight their cruel oppressors. And now the group is headed to Minecraft.
It's not to protest the game's treatment of sheep, however, but to create a digital world in PETA's own image. "True to PETA’s mission—and unlike on other Minecraft servers—no animals, not even digital ones, can be harmed on our dedicated Minecraft server!" the group said in a statement. "Visitors to PETA’s custom-made digital island will explore vast expanses of landscapes where the animals of Minecraft roam free. They can also visit extensive vegetable and flower gardens, walk through a fantastic re-creation of PETA’s HQ, and discover an abandoned and decaying slaughterhouse."
Well, you knew there had to be some kind of abattoir action going on in there. There will also be an abandoned circus with a sign welcoming attendees to "the saddest show on Earth"; hopefully neither of them will spring any surprise graphic photos or videos on us. PETA will mark the November 15 launch of its Minecraft server with "build-off" competitions and a pro-animal rally. In the meantime, enjoy the preview, and debate: Are Creepers animals—and if so, is it okay if they blow themselves up?
