Collectables
Collectables
I purchased a meteorite fragment from the Sikhote-Alin event that fell in 1947 in southeastern Siberia. I've taken an interest in meteorites.
This one caught my eye due to it's unique shape and also that it was a whole fragment and not a slice.
The Sikohote-Alin was massive (70 metric tonnes that reached the ground). The largest observed to date. (from Wiki) It had a mass of 220,000 pounds before entering the atmosphere.
Composition: 93% iron, 5.9% nickel, 0.42% cobalt, 0.46% phosphorus, and 0.28% sulfur, with trace amounts of germanium and iridium. Minerals present include taenite, plessite, troilite, chromite, kamacite, and schreibersite.
I've been wanting to obtain a meteorite for awhile. I'm eying Martian meteorite fragments but they are pretty expensive for some really small samples. Still, it would be cool to own a piece of Mars.
http://www.imca.cc/mars/martian-meteorites.htm
I'm also thinking about collecting Roman coins. I'd like to get one coin of each of the roman emperors. I think I'll start off with the first five (Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero). I'd like to get a coin with Alexander the Great on it as well from ~330-323 BC.
Does anyone else have meteorites, ancient coins or anything else of interest? I spent a lot of time exploring Roman ruins in Italy. I always wanted a stone from the Appian way (via Appia). "All roads lead to Rome" It ends in the Forum. Kind of hard to verify a stone from there though.

I have a crapload of Star Wars potf2 stuff from 1995 in boxes. Hoping that SW makes a comeback and some of the things will be worth offing on eBay.

I can definitely understand your interest in all things Roman. It is an inspiring visit to see all those "ruins" with massive amounts of structural components still standing. The torre argentina where Caesar was murdered is pretty funny now that its home to like 300 cats.

Re: Collectables
Oh, I did this too. Topped out at around 1700 DVDs. I then ripped them all to a HD and sold them. My Blu Ray collection is tiny by comparison. I think I have around 150-175 total. Quite a few double dips, but only if I see them for $7 or less. Of course, all the new movies I get on Blu Ray too. 3D if it is an option!Spang wrote:I collect DVDs.
Here was part of my collection at the old house. I still have about 600-700 in a bookcase at the new house. I really need to sell those. It's mostly foreign and rare movies I have left.
My board games are taking up more space, though I rarely really play them. I like to pimp them out by painting them up and by getting every expansion if they have them. This hobby appeals to my creative side.
I collect porn too. I follow certain companies, directors, and sometimes porn stars. I'm an organizational freak, so it oddly plays into that really well. The thing about porn is, once it's gone, it's gone. I'm glad I have several complete series from the early 2000's! I collect porn like I used to comic books. It scratches that same itch. I'm always looking to fill that particular missing movie in any of my series or other category.
I guess you could say I collect music like this too. I'm just constantly DLing and organizing. Even stuff I don't really listen to!

Oh, I collect Hot Sauces too. I have about 300 of them. I used them as a kind of decoration at my old house in the kitchen since the color scheme was white/black/stainless/red. I don't really have room for them in the new house, so I have 4 boxes full of hot sauce sitting in the storage area of my basement.
Re: Collectables
I also have the largest collection of lame, unfunny and frankly stupid excuses for a comeback on the internet. I suggest anyone to try to start their own collection because most of them were effortless to get.Winnow wrote: That would be a no to having anything of interest although I wouldn't discount your collection of historical fish gutting and tuna canning manuals.
Re: Collectables
You really need a life besides sucking someone elses life away from them. It must be your husband's tears that you collect.
Re: Collectables
Another one! Man, I need more storage space. Aww man, it's another double. I have like fifty of those ones. Do you have anything new?

And the little troll wonders why you think she is stalking you..... How pathetic of a person do you have to be to troll a thread like this? Despicable little piece of garbage.
Anyway, nice rock. I am a sucker for anything of historical value, although I am more into things if I actually stumble on them or find them and not so much paying for them from other people. If there is anything I collect now, it is probably old or odd coins that I find and some firearms. I think the most interesting piece that I ever found was a steel Nazi penny from 1944. On the firearm side, I have a model 17 Colt revolver in .45 that was made somewhere around 1920.

Re: Collectables
Nice. I agree that the most valuable items are things you find yourself. I believe I mentioned this in the past, but when i was a kid in Europe, we were visiting the site of the World War I Battle of Verdun in France. My dad told me not to touch anything as we searched through some pretty dense forest looking for artifacts. I ended up picking up a German WW I hand grenade that still had the detonator and half the powder in it. To kyoukan's dismay, it didn't go off and my dad cleaned out the powder and removed the detonator. We also found some WW I pots and pans still laid out as if they were around a campfire (the French were overrun by the Germans and had to retreat quickly, ditching a lot of things). The grenade is very rusted and the handle is mostly gone but it's my prized possession, having found it on the battlefield myself.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote: I think the most interesting piece that I ever found was a steel Nazi penny from 1944. wow those nazi steel coins are worth almost double their face value. you should go on antiques roadshow with your amazing find.
I can see where it might have some sentimental value to a racist fucking asshole who should probably be strafed by a P-51 Mustang though!

that places it exactly 2 cents higher than I value your life.
Those old battlefield sites would be a very interesting place to visit. Even going to some of the major battlefields of the Civil War and some of the major areas around the country where there were large concentrations of Native Americans could make for some good finds.

Re: Collectables
I have a Prussian WW2 bayonette that saw field action. It was given to me by my grandfather. He got it from while fighting on the Western Front.
Cool story incoming.
My grandpa and his unit were camped outside some German city awaiting the upcoming morning when they would secure it. Well, he and several others heard the city was already abandoned, so they snuck off at night to go get some souvenirs before others had looted them all the following morning. His friends all got some really cool stuff, like Lugers, and the ultimate prize of a Nazi Flag from a Hitler Youth building. Apparently my grandpa was after a flag, first and foremost but didn't get that lucky. However, my grandpa did come back to camp with a 100% intact, mint condition Nazi Officer's uniform. He was so excited. I guess he paid an arm and a leg to have it shipped back home. It was equal to 2 weeks pay at the time. Later, while still in Europe, he discovered that it wasn't a Nazi Officer's uniform at all. He had actually looted and mailed back a Nazi Fireman's Uniform!
Check out more pics here: http://www.ioffer.com/i/148817369
He was so disappointed and disgusted with himself that when he got home from WWII he simply threw it away.
Also, I had a friend in Arkansas that collected Nazi stuff. Not freaky/crazy stuff. I remember he had an entire single place setting from a Nazi Airship (blimp). The silverware was stamped with a special logo, as were the china for the plates and other dishes. I was with him when he found the silverware in a backwoods antique shop in Arkansas. He was was ecstatic at his find. Jeez, I can't even find a picture to link of that stuff. The silverware was not fancy at all. It was very plain. I remember it just had a stamp on the back of each handle.

I would bet the fireman's uniform would be more rare and worth more than the officer's uniforms. Either way, those pieces would be nice little slices of history...and even better they came from family that was there.

That's exactly what I said! I didn't even know there was such a thing. Too bad he threw it out. All his medals got stolen in the 70's and he never had them replaced. I was considering doing that for my mom for Christmas actually. You know, get a nice case and put his pic, a flag, and all his medals inside. I looked into it once and you have to buy replicas. The Army does not reimburse those!Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:I would bet the fireman's uniform would be more rare and worth more than the officer's uniforms.
Re: Collectables
Don't tell Kilmoll you can buy replica combat medals. The guy will be walking around looking like a Prussian Field Marshal by Thursday afternoon.

It is pretty fucking sad that people can't bother with any type of conversation without that pathetic little shit trying to derail it. What makes it sadder is that some others also come in to add even more garbage on what looked to be a pretty benign, non-political thread.
And back to the topic, I believe that part of the Stolen Valor Act was removed so that you could actually buy genuine medals to replace those that he had Fair. Not sure what kind of prices you might see, but they would at least be the real deal article.

The key word is "fond". I don't shit on anyone except for team pedo, most of whom are boring as shit when it comes to this forum and don't offer much to talk about. I've posted plenty over the years in various forums to contribute to or generate discussions, and still do, unlike the stalker that is still upset I questioned the amazing neutrino discovery which did in fact turn out to be bogus. The life leach really is a horrible person and one of the few on this board that I think really is an ass IRL. For the rest, I've met a few and they met me at the Fan Faire back in the day. All good people.
Team pedo seems to equate flame wars on this forum regarding the #1 internet hot topic PS4 vs Xbox One that has a bazillion flame threads out there, or politics, or religion, to a post about hobbies. In reality, it's just the same morons that overreact to top ten internet debates that are on just about every other forum and try their best to make up for it in other threads being asses. Most people also don't seem able to compartmentalize debates/forums with kyoukan being the biggest offender and classic douchebag troll. Big time stalker.

Winnow will never have a normal thread in any forum I post in. I will derail every single one I see because he is a fucking twat that does nothing but troll, post garbage and fucking worthless shit. He is fucking pollution and people like him need to be reminded why they can never have nice things. Since this forum is unmoderated, he will not get banned like he has been from every other forum on the internet, and fucking human waste like him cannot get away with being completely merit-less douche.
Although I will still sell him this martian rock that I have here for the low price of $50. It comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Russian government. You fucking gullible shit-for-brains.
Also, I wasn't making a joke about Kilmoll so I don't know where the laugh track comes from. People like him who load up on guns are the first ones to load up on fake medals and uniforms and pretend that they were in the military. Because you Americans fucking fetishize military service like it is something anyone with a 9th grade education cannot do.

Easy to laugh at your short bus antics and also continue a thread as most of the posters have been doing in this thread.

Re: Collectables
"Over the years" maybe but really not anything in the past 2-3. You USED to post mostly positive informative stuff like with the mouse thread and the 24" monitor one and such. Mentioning something and why it was good and what was bad about it. Now it's pretty much: Here's the best product because I use it and everything else sucks and everyone who uses anything else sucks. Maybe the only recent exception I can think of is Windows 8. Although the active audience of the board is pretty lacking these days so I imagine threads like that can't really take off these days.Winnow wrote:The key word is "fond". Repeating the same shit over and over and over isn't really contributing. Yes we get it the DS4 controller, which you haven't even used, is SO terrible, even though I haven't really heard anything overly negative about it with some saying they even prefer it over the XBO controller. The only complaints I've really seen has been the share button (and the one on the other side I can't think of offhand) is awkwardly placed. And the battery life isn't so hot. Both of which are valid complaints but hardly deal-breakers. I haven't seen a respectable person mention the stick placement as being bad although yeah I'm sure there are a handful out there.
Not everything has to be so partisan. You don't have to argue against every criticism just to try and be right when, let's face it, there are times you're clearly not. Then again nobody is right all the time. There's nothing wrong with saying something like "Yeah I agree that feature could be improved" or whatever (as an example). Honestly I see that mentality a lot more in Repubicans than anyone else: "I can't agree with you on a single thing under any circumstances!"

You truly are ignorant...and yes you are worse than Winnow. I could and have shit all over him for his retardation in some posts that he just pounds the same shit into the ground over and over. You, however, have never EVER had one positive thing to say EVER. You are the most abrasive, useless, negative, trolling piece of shit I have encountered on any forum anywhere.
I truly love the way you compeletely fabricate shit based off of things you only know about from "media" and TV and spout them like they are some kind of sacred law, when you have absolutely zero idea of what you are talking about. "people like me" buying medals? Are you fucking serious? Let me clue you in on something you fucktard....."people like me" respect the sacrifices that our veterans have made through the 200+ years this has been a country. "People like me" would not EVVVVVVVEEEEERRRRRR buy and parade around in something that we did not earn and show disrespect for people who gave their lives in places like Normandy. There are a very very few people on this board who actually know me even a little bit from outside of here....and while they probably don't speak up about it, they sure as fuck know plenty of the truth about how I really am. Those are the only ones I even care about...and I truly could care less if the rest of you ceased existing tomorrow.

My Meteorite arrived today. Pretty cool to hold something that hit the earth back in 1947.
First thing I did was give it the magnet test!
It's pretty small but has a cool shape and is an individual piece (meaning it didn't break off of a larger meteorite while traveling through the atmosphere when the main mass exploded) Heavier meteorites are pretty expensive for individuals but Sikhote-Alin exploded and created lots of shrapnel pieces. These pieces are generally less expensive because they aren't as visually appealing, having less time to melt during entry.

Re: Collectables
I own three more meteorites.
I have an Iron Nickel one from the large fall in Campo del Cielo, Argentina. A larger piece must have exploded high in the atmosphere as it's a cross between a shrapnel and individual meteorite. lots of jagged edges that have been partially smoothed down. Can tell which side was facing toward earth as it fell as it's much more smooth and there are overflow lips
I have another Iron Nickel meteorite from Sikhote-Alin in Siberia. It's pretty small. Got it cheap.
Third one is my first stony/iron meteorite. It's a chondrite class. It's from a site in the Sahara Desert, Morocco. As opposed to the iron nickel meteorites, it's more rusted in color. Much weaker pull to a magnet as well.
My original meteorite (in this post before all the flamage) is still the coolest looking of the bunch wth its odd smooth shape and fusion crust.
