DJ Hero

Post by Fairweather Pure »

I like this game enough, so I think it deserves it's own thread.

Background:

I never cared about the game. Another gimmick. Another rhythm game. Another fake plastic instrument. Music I don't really care about. I only bought it because I have a close friend that raves about the game. His outspoken praise was what really raised my initial interest from zero to "maybe if I see it on sale sometime". Well, I saw it on sale and I grabbed it on a whim.

Gameplay:

It's another rhythm game.

Controller:

It's another fake plastic instrument.

Music:

Mash ups. Lots and lots of mash ups. Now, Funkmaster made a point in another thread that he heard the music and returned the game because he doesn't like mash ups. I read that and thought "fuck, neither do I". That was before I actually played the game. I guess I was wrong. I can safely say that yes, yes I do like mash ups. The music makes the game. It's normally not my cup of tea at all, but something magical happens when you're working that plastic fucking turntable... a weird connection occurs. It's very trance-like, and everything just meshes together. It feels very much like you are controlling the music through the controller. Hell, in DJ Hero 2 you actually do. Now, I played in my living room, with my 18 inch sub woofers cranked up to the max, shaking every window in the house so I imagine that may have added to the immersion factor, but you get the point. The music is very, very good in these games and this is not the type of stuff that I would go out of my way to listen to. It just...fits. It fits better than I would've imagined.

Now that I own the games and find myself throughly impressed, I started looking up reviews. Surprise, surprise, the game has gotten very solid scores across the board. So, if you enjoyed Rock Bad/Guitar Hero games, you owe it to yourself to pick up DJ Hero 1 and 2. They are both on sale at Gamestop right now, but prices may fall even more the longer you wait. Just remember that this studio has been dismantled, so whatever is out on shelves is all there will ever be so don't put it off too long.

I hope this thread inspires others to check the game out in the same way my friend's praise inspired me, because, goddamn DJ Hero is amazing fun. The fact that I got the DJ Hero 2 bundle and the first game for only 40$ toal makes me feel like this has been one of my favorite surprises of this generation.

Yeah like I said, not my thing. Any kind of dance/trance/techno music makes me want to punch a baby with one hand while drowning a puppy with the other, fucking terrible. I get excited to hear Public Enemy/whatever, then all the sudden it turns into some faggy dance fist bumping Jersey Shore techno bullshit and it just ruins a perfectly great, DJ friendly song.

I want a DJ game that is strictly rap, and good rap, and uncensored rap at that. That is what Scratch is supposed to be, but that game, while not canceled, has been delayed longer than damn near any other game I can think of.

Here's some examples of the music. Just imagine controlling all the scratching and mixing as the song is playing. It's kind of something you gotta experience to appreciate, but here you go. I don't know the track lists for shit so I don't have a favorite song or anything. Just do "DJ Hero music" search on youtube for more. Some of the mixes are pretty amazing!

Just lots of weird fucking shit out there for this game's music. Oh yeah, you can also have someone play the guitar on some of the tracks. Pretty cool stuff man!
