Predictions from 1900

Post by Winnow »

This is a great read.

It's from Ladies Home Journal at the turn of he century, predicting what would happen in the next 100 years.

Some of the predictions:

-We will be able to get form New York to London in two days.
-A University Education will be free to every man and woman
-There will be no C,X or Q in our everyday alphabet
-Ready cooked meals will be bought instead of having to cook yourself
-There will be no street cars in our large cities

They are dead on in their predictions of the telephone and photography.

-Telephones around the world. Someone in the middle of the Atlantic will be able to converse with someone in chicago
-Photographs will be telegraphed from any distance. "If there is a battle in China 100 years hence, there will be photographs of its most striking events will be published an hour later in newspapers. Photographs will reproduce all of natures colors."

-----

Cool stuff. I think our 2000 predictions for 2100 will be less accurate than the ones made in 1900 as technology advances faster and faster unless, of course, we are extinguished which is a possible prediction as well.

I like the "Everybody will walk ten miles" one.
A man or woman unable to walk ten miles at a stretch will be regarded as a weakling
A strawberry as large as an apple would rock though.

I see they left out the "Robots will clean our houses for us." prediction. Something I am severly pissed off about, Tomorrow's World promised me a cleaning robot! I want my mecha-slave!
It could be that the only purpose for your every existence, is to serve as a warning to others.

You know, they're really far off on some things there, but overall I think that's a pretty impressive list that does a much better job making accurate predictions that I would have guessed.

I'm still not convinced people actually live in Canada. It's all Communist propaganda!
"There is at least as much need to curb the cruel greed and arrogance of part of the world of capital, to curb the cruel greed and violence of part of the world of labor, as to check a cruel and unhealthy militarism in international relationships." -Theodore Roosevelt
