The shock movies are definitely the most effective. I assume by shock you mean the ones that get all quiet and then make you jump with a loud noise / effect.
They aren't necessarily the most scary to me though. I'm not sure I'd go for any of those on the list. It'll sound dumb, but the movie that gave me the most intense long lasting "scared" feeling was Blair Witch when it first came out in theaters.
We just got really into it for some reason, and yeah, I was pretty on edge.

Psychological horror does nothing on me. The "finer" points of the ring just made me yawn. But that tension of "what's next what's next what's next wha... oh fuck" just makes me shit myself.

The appropriate punctuation for your poll topic should include a question mark.

Blood/Gore and Torture are nothing to me if there isn't a back story. The last several years of Hollywood snuff films have been pure crap IMO. I'm glad thier hayday has past for the forseeable future and Hollywood can release real horror films.

movies that can create real suspense scare me.. but it's all so predictable these days that it's not easy to find those true edge-of-your-seat flicks.. at least not for me ;p

Ok "freaks me out" and "favorite" are two different things.
Torture freaks me out.
Zombies are my favorite.
House of 1000 Corpses is an example of what freaks me out.
Natural Born Killers freaks me out.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre freaks me out.
The Living Dead movies I find really cool.
Resident Evil movies are cool.
28 Days is cool.

Re: AAh!! too scary!
Childen in Village of the Damned creeped me out more than any Zombie-flick.
Zombies are kewl. So are Monsters.
Ghost-movies (when they appear when you least expect it) can be scary due to shock-effects.
I know many got a scare from Clowns after seeing Poltergeist 1 and "It" but not me.
I like splattermovies but dont enjoy too many autopsies.
