I'm making a best-of grunge CD. I have the typical grunge bands covered, as well as some more obscure, but was checked for suggestions on more obscure songs from the era.
Hunger Strike - Temple of the Dog
Angry Chair - Alice in Chains
Black - Pearl Jam
Jesus Christ Pose - Soundgarden
Plush - Stone Temple Pilots
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (duh)
It would be hard to cull the list down to one CD. Many many great songs from lesser known grunge bands like Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, L7, Tad, Screaming Trees and others that never had the commercial success of the above bands.

Kurt Cobain liking a band does not make them grunge as well (thank god). In my opinion, they are difficult to classify - but whatever they are, it's definitely not grunge.
Screaming Trees-Dollar Bill
Mother Love Bone-Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns
Alice In Chains-Would?
Mudhoney-Get Into yours
Blind Melon-No More Rain
Mad Season-Wake Up
Green River-Swallow My Pride
Dinosaur Jr - Freak Scene
Tad - Behemoth
Mudhoney - Mud Ride/Touch Me Im Sick/In and Out of Grace/This Gift/gah just all of them
Nirvana - Floyd The Barber
Thank god you mentioned Dinosaur Jr. I thought I was the only person left in the world who remembered them. Them and SuperDeluxe.
I lived just north of Seattle towards the beginning of grunge (We moved up there in 92) and I spent my elementary/middle school/ and high school days not realizing there were any other options This is the stuff my memories are made of *hugs* - a_guide
