T-Mobile Sony xPeria Z1s

Post by Canelek »

The fiancee and I are bouncing our old phones (iPhone 5 and Samsung G3 respectively) for the new Sony phone.

http://www.sonymobile.com/us/products/p ... peria-z1s/

I was deciding between the LG G2 and this, so I decided to go with the better camera sensor, micro-SD option, and seemingly-better construction. It is on par with most new "high end" phones offered in 2014. Battery life reviews are mostly positive, as are reviews regarding most facets of this phone, aside from the socket flaps.

Hey, this fucker is waterproof ~1 meter! Not that I would want to take it snorkeling--I have the diving case for my Canon G12 for that--but it is a nice feature to have in the rain-inclined northwest.

I'll give my thoughts when it has arrived and I have had a chance to mess with it a bit.

Oh, it is Android, which I like, but may not be for Windows or iOS fans.

I was listening to a podcast recently and the host was ranting and raving at how horrible the camera software on the LG G2 is. Auto-settings is apparently completely broken and keeps focusing in and out.

Heard good things about the g2, but that would certainly not be a good thing! That and I like having scalable storage :)

1 year in with my Nexus 4 and lack of removable storage is my only complaint.

I've got unlimited data, dropbox and a VPN set up to data at the house but it's not the same experience at all.

That Sony seems to tip over the edge of "too big for a pocket". Nexus 4 is close and the Nexus 5 is also too big.

Just out of curiosity, what are you people using all of that storage for on your phones? I have 32 GB and it seems like plenty. Are you still storing your entire library of mp3s on your phones or something? I seem to barely push 32 GB even on my iPads. it seems so much is streaming these days and cloud based.

Music, movie or two, assload of gps tiles, etc... Plus can't be arsed to clean up regularly.

Streaming doesn't work fast/reliably enough outside metro areas to be a realistic replacement for my use. For a dedicated suburbanite it'd be fine.

I've never come near capacity on my 16Gb tablet.

16GB phone and this says just about everything that needs to be said:

ROFL. 720p screenshot is huge! Spoilered it. Suffice to say that most is it is Apps and Games and associated data. Windows Phone takes the sandboxed approach and application specific data is counted within the application. The yellow is system files. Photos are stored automatically on an SD card I have in the phone.

Usually, I barely use any storage, aside from random photos I take and music. When I am out of reliable streaming coverage (vacation, etc) I tend to load up my tablet as well as my phone to have a nice variety of in-flight or leisure show/movie watching.

It isn't a need for me, just a convenience, and was not a deal-breaker for the G2. I just like how the Sony stacks up to the other high-end Android phones, and is an obvious upgrade from the Galaxy S3. The Sony is a bit larger, but I have decent-sized pockets in my jeans (not everyone in Portland wears skinny-jeans!!!)

I was considering going back to the iPhone due to superior outdoors viewing, but I do like the larger screens and Android OS!

I highly recommend all Sony products : )

Still rumors but it appears we'll finally see a larger version of the iPhone this year.

Despite reports of poor viewing angles on the Sony, it is not my TV, so I am not concerned. Other than that, the Bravia tech they supposedly they are using is pretty top notch. Hoping to get it ordered within the next few days. Yay new toy! I haven't had a Sony phone since the old late 90s Ericsson, hah!

That was my last phone from Sony from the 90's. It had a battery life of about 10 minutes and that was on standby!

That's not a phone!

Reminds me of a test LTE "handset" we had at work, needed a dolly to haul it around :)

I hear the camera on the 1520 is amazing too. 20MP? How are your photos?

I have not had a chance to do much shooting on it yet. Yes, 20MP. Once I get some shots, I will stick them up.
