Microsoft's "Surface"
Microsoft's "Surface"
Here's a video of what it can do:
omg, I rock. embedded. weeee! Sooo nice! no clicky to new window!
This looks pretty cool : ) $5-10K means not going to get one anytime soon but will be great for restaurants etc imo.

Ok, I can "see" the imbed type that you're using now that I am at work, and it is still trying to load it all....not good.

Re: Microsoft's "Surface"
i wonder who was working on multi-touch first, apple or microsoft... the way the photos are being manipulated is eerily similar to the iphone videos.
i want this thing and the development kit for it, immediately.

You know it's a problem for some of the posters... Why not just link?Winnow wrote:omg, I rock. embedded. weeee! Sooo nice! no clicky to new window!
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Embedded youtube sucks! Slows down my scrolling over RD. The less graphics the better.

Re: Microsoft's "Surface"
just turn off flash in your VV board preferences. That's why it's an option!
I think that way, you'll see the link but it won't embed.

To be clear, it's not a problem for *me*.
Cool to know you can turn off flash though, thanks.

It's what I was hoping for when I suggested embedded you tubes in site developer. (that it be optional)
You need to fiddle with the URL a little to embed it so I don't think many will embed you tube videos anyway...but for those that are worried about work related stuff, you should have flash off anyway. Games can probably be embedded, etc as well.

Visit http://www.microsoft.com/surface and watch the three mini videos. There is some really neat stuff there.

Re: Microsoft's "Surface"
Just disabled Flash as well, but the "clicky to a new window" was never my issue with embedded video. I prefer opening video links into a new window/tab so that I can continue to browse while it loads/queues elsewhere as well as keeping this site from being flagged by IT

Re: Microsoft's "Surface"
links opening in a new window was a feature of the vault... the url tag was embedding a target... it doesn't seem to be doing that now, and that would be a welcome addition.

You can still do that but now if you click or cut and paste the url between the flash tags (if you have flash turned off) it will be "full window" in your browser which aslanna seems to like...so even more benefits and options! turn off, use the super drag and drop add-in to highlite the you tube tag and it will pop open in a new tab or window (depending on what you have set with Tab Mix Plus!
more options > less options!
now all sort of goodness is possible for everyone.

Or you could just post a link and everyone (- 1) is happy!

Re: Microsoft's "Surface"
I'll take the extra step of adding a normal "modified" link under my flash embeds that will open the video full window so those that have flash off don't have to select the link and open it, they can just click like they always have...which is hella easy if you have the super drag and drop add0in but I'll assume most people are using World War II browser technology.

In Firefox, shift-clicking a link will automatically open it in a new window. 99% sure the behavior is the same in IE.

Re: Microsoft's "Surface"
If people are really worried about their IT department getting their feathers ruffled because of the embedded youtube videos I guess I could throw a few ideas around:
1- Is there some way that we could have an icon next to the post similar to the attachment icon - so that people know before they open it that there is an embedded video there?
2- If not, we could just make it a common courtesy rule that if you start a post with a video in it, you state that in the title of the thread.
I know those aren't a perfect solution, but if Winnow (and others) want to use this new functionality we shouldn't say you can't use it.. That is why the upgrade was done, for new features, etc.

Re: Microsoft's "Surface"
Turning off Flash works too...much easier, and it would not require posters to remember to tag their subjects in a particular way.
Re: Microsoft's "Surface"
Hmm? You don't have to remember jack shit about tagging. Just do what you've always done and turn off your flash option in preferences.Boogahz wrote:Turning off Flash works too...much easier, and it would not require posters to remember to tag their subjects in a particular way.

I think that's a mouse setting. Middle click for me just opens the Zoom feature.
Ctrl+Click opens in a link in a new tab in IE. Shift+Click opens a link in a new window.

Re: Microsoft's "Surface"
Back in the early or mid 90's on a show called "Beyond 2000" they highlighted a multi-touch display that was being developed to act as a virtual control panel for various equipment. It could track multiple touches allowing virtual slide panels, jog / shuttle wheels, switches, etc. It could handle several touches, but it's been so long I don't remember how many. I doubt either MS or Apple had any R&D working on developing this capability on their own, they just licensed it from somewhere.Fash wrote:i wonder who was working on multi-touch first, apple or microsoft... the way the photos are being manipulated is eerily similar to the iphone videos.

Re: Microsoft's "Surface"
This was in another thread from early 2006 but the link in there doesn't work:
Either way fingerprints would bug the shit out of me on a display that large!
So the manipulation shown in Surface isn't exactly groundbreaking. Who is to say who came up with it first. My guess is it wasn't Apple OR Microsoft.
