Age of Conan

Post by Winnow »

I haven't read up much on this game yet so won't get my hopes up.

Here's a "fly by" in the game showing off some DX-10 capabilities:

http://www.pcgameshardware.de/?article_id=551860

Unlike Vanguard, the environment looks fleshed out and detailed. The video is camcorder footage so not the best.
During the Vista launch party in Munich, we had the opportunity to film an Age of Conan flyby demo running on an Nvidia G80-Card and Windows Vista. It shows real DirectX-10 graphics for the first time and although the resolution is not very high, it gives you a good first impression of the next generation visuals of the upcoming MMORPG-title. Please keep in mind that Age of Conan is still in beta stage; hickups during the video may occur because the game is not yet optimized for performance.

Would be nice to see something look that good and have playable framerates.
As it stands, it's a nice demo of what DX10 is capable of.

Off topic, but another game to check out the capabilities of DX10 is Crysis.. That game looks insane.

I didn't say it was anything more than that. If I'm going to lag, I'd rather lag in a rich environment than lag in a bland environment like Vanguard.

Now that Vanguard has been optimised, it runs surprisingly well on a half decent system. It was virtually unplayable for me in beta but it runs quite nicely for me now.

Neat video. I look forward to the day when the actual playable environment looks like that.

As for the game... According to the game's website, your starting nationalities are limited to Cimmerian (duh), Aquilonian (/yawn) or Stygian (yay). You start as a commoner, and to advance you progress through various story arcs within which you choose your archtype (rogue, soldier, priest, mage), and eventually your specialized class (typical spread of stuff: druids, clerics, shamans, rangers, assassins, necros, demonologists, conquerers, guardians, etc.) I'm kind of disappointed that the racial choices are so limited. A Keshan barbarian would be cool.

Screenshots certainly don't look bland like Vanguards:

Last week's Easter applications for the Age of Conan beta have soared over the 100,000 mark, more than 50,000 signed up in just 24 hours.
Sounds like we'll need another Forum soon!

I better get into this beta. In beta comments sign-up section, I said that I knew every line from both Conan and Conan the Destroyer movies and to call me if they wanted to test me. I volunteered to do NPC voices for free.

I received an email from "Clan of Conan"

It was just a newsletter:

Thought it was a beta invite! Bastards!

Anyone get a beta invite to Age of Conan yet?

It's quite a unique concept of solo play until level 20 and then going hardcore PvP. It should be pretty interesting and hoping for the beta invite to this as well as Warhammer.

The character generator alone is better than the entire LoTR and WoW games combined.

The character generator in SWG was the most customizable up to that point and the gameplay still sucked.

sorry... AoC will not be any good

its entirely too guild-centric and the control scheme is an abomination

the "real combat" shit that they are waving around is a joke. The combat is similar to oblivion where you push a button and your character makes a very slow, very clumsy animation. If a collision occurs then congratulations you just attacked something. Throw in latency and a framerate which is very likely to be sub 30FPS for most budgets and playing the game becomes a very frustrating experience. The last i checked up on this game, they actually "solved" the latency issue by forcing players to remain still while attacking.. thats right you just sit there and swing your sword over and over again in front of you, while the other guy stands there and swings his word over and over again in front of him.. OH BUT YOU BOTH CAN SWING UP.. OR DOWN.. OR LEFT AND RIGHT LOL COMBO MOVES. I HOPE TO GOD that they have found a better solution by now

Okay and if thats not ridiculous enough, ranged attacks are actually wound-up and AIMED by players.. WHAT... THE FUCK.. .. haha.. just.... NO.

it'll make great eye candy and a good fling game for people who dont take shit very seriously, so I hope it does very well in that regard..

Warhammer is pretty much the only MMO on the workbench thats actually capable of becoming a winner

It's more of a case of there being nothing better that I've seen.

I need to take a look at Warhammer but besides that, name some upcoming MMORPGs that look good. None of the existing ones appear better to me. I thought Tabula Rasa might be good. Not so much after trying out the beta.

I signed up for the Warhammer beta on May 31st. Hopefully I'll get a shot at checking it out soon. The combat system for AoC does look questionable.

It looks like you can play ToonTown for free now:

http://play.toontown.com/webHome.php?r=369679

There's your game of the decade! (need to use IE browser!)
Disney's Toontown Online, the first multiplayer online game designed just for kids and families, has a brand new way to play! Now you can jump into the most exciting game in the Tooniverse with a Free Account!

Create an account and you'll be able to play in one of the Toontown neighborhoods -- when you want, for as long as you want! Check out some of these exciting Free Account features:

* Create up to two (2) Toon characters
* Explore Toontown Central and take on ToonTasks
* Earn gags and defeat evil robot Cogs
* Play Trolley games or go fishing to earn jellybeans
* Race go karts on Goofy Speedway
* Adopt your own pet Doodle
You're restricted to ToonTown Central which includes the playground, Loopy Lane, Punchline Place and Silly Street!

That's enough to have some fun. I remember Dreamland being the tough zone in beta though!

I agree, since EQ2 and WOW not a single one of them has looked like anything but a failed mockery, and I have a strong feeling that this will forever be the case..

I think I am going to take it upon myself to change the title of this game. Please give it it's own sub forum, called Age Of Winnow.

The "next" MMORPG i see have potential is Warhamma Online, but i may be biased since i've always loved the Warhammer-world.

Both Warhammer and 40k has a place in my heart, always loved their way of portraying Chaos with Chaos Undivided, KHorne (Blood for the Bloodgod!), Slaanesh(Genderbending princes/ess of Pleasure?!), Tzeentch (Mages and weird magic galore!)and Nurgle (Stinky Gits spreadin the disease!)

They (the brits at Games Workshop) were good at making good and interesting lore as well as a good story for the Warhammer world, be it old-school or 40k.

The greenskin models they have in the game are spot-on and i'll be dyin' to try out Chaos in that game.

Watching a demo of Warhammer, I don't see characters running around while fighting. I see them standing still and clicking buttons.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dVAO-Y4 ... ed&search=

Warhammer RvR looks interesting:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApYSgxl_l00

Warhammer looks like it will be the same "find an enemy" stand there and click a button to attack or another button to cast a spell. Not sure why AoC is being ripped for at least trying something different. That first video put me to sleep except when the german said "uber". That was kinda cool to hear a native german speaker say "uber".

It's still in beta. The developers don't sound like they are anal and won't change as they learn things along the way:
Ranged combat in Age of Conan

- Jun 29, 2007

Many things have changed about the ranged combat system in Age of Conan since we first started revealing details about this feature in early 2006. Game development is an ever-changing process, and what might have looked great on paper earlier in the game’s development cycle may turn out to be not quite as good when it finally becomes implemented. That’s when the developers create several iterations of a game feature before they finally set on how it’s going to work in the final game.

The ranged combat system has been through several of these iterations before we ended up with what we have today. Just to take an example: while the game still supports first-person mode for firing off arrows – complete with a crosshair and realistic targeting – we’ve also improved third-person ranged combat heavily by introducing what we call the cone targeting system that is used in all distance combat, including spell casting.
Entire article on ranged combat:

When I was younger, I used to think that the world was doing it to me and that the world owes me some thing…When you're a teeny bopper, that's what you think. Because it's super important to have a forum for every mmorpg that 4 people on the board play. Just wait, in a month or two the Vanguard and LOTR forums will be in the archives and a few new will replace them.
