Music Production software

Post by Funkmasterr »

So,
I am looking to get back into this kind of stuff (making beats, etc) and I am wondering what the BEST program to have for this is, I am downloading Orion Platinum 7 right now because it seemed to be the best one from what I could find, but I was hoping there is someone here that does this kind of stuff too and has a recommendation.

Thanks!

There nothing available that compares to Pro Tools.

It's the industry standard for a reason.

There are plenty of options, but you said you wanted the BEST, and Pro Tools is it.

Ok so I found a good copy of the software, but after reading up a bit on it (on the site I dl'd it from) it seems like there is some confusion as to the hardware that you need. Anyone have any experience and know what you do need for it? I also read there is a hack to make it usable without the hardware, but I would rather not do that.

Thanks for the info.

Without the DSP, ProTools will kill your system.

DSP = Digital Sound Processing, I assume Miir is talking about a hardware digital sound processor, instead of using your processor to do the processing, which would significantly slow down your system.

ProTools is awesome if you have the right setup for it, but for casual purposes there's no need to go for such a complicated program. You can get by just fine with Cubase VST 3.0 and some decent plugins. Also, the learning curve on protools is pretty damn steep.

I haven't touched Cubase in almost a decade.
It was awesome on my amiga. :)

Unless you're dead serious about making music, take Drolgin's advice.
You don't need Pro Tools unless you have experience in engineering or production and intend to make professional quality recordings. Cubase should suit your needs just fine and it is much easier to work with.

I do want to get to professional grade, this is something I am going to take seriously and learn on my own (which is why I want to learn something easier first probably) then once I have the basics down real well I can move to Pro Tools.

I have done a bit with this in the past (taken a few classes) and I did really well with, and my friend from NY is getting into rapping himself, and he liked some of the simpler beats I put together in the past - so I could be golden if I can get it down.

It depends on the music you want to make. If your using lots of midi or virtual instruments, ProTools is a little lacking in that department.
Protools is the standard for audio recording, as most of the work is done by the hardware, and not by your computer.
However, I don't think this is the case with the MBox, thats just a big dongle.

For 'beats' based music FruityLoops is very popular, as is Reason. For more loop/remix type music, Ableton Live is king.

It also depends on what platform your on, as some programs are only for win or mac.

Logic from apple is also very very highly respected, although its dongle based.

I personally use Digital Performer. It has VERY powerful midi editing, although I don't use midi/virtual instruments too much. It is mac only.

Protools is also not worth it if your buying an Mbox, as the digital converters in the protools gear sucks compared to what you can get from other manufacturers at the same price point.

I have a MOTU Traveller in that department.

But again, that only becomes important if you plan on recording OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of live audio.
