Recommendations for everyone

Post by Drolgin Steingrinder »

Hey folks,

What's shaking in your CDplayer/mp3/itunes account at the moment?

Personally I've recently rediscovered Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come and I'm astonished to discover how awesome this is. It's very early avant garde jazz, but don't get discouraged - there's genuine musicianship and artistry here, it isn't just musical wanking. Also, I've been in a Laurie-Anderson-Big-Science kind of mood lately.

Also seeing playtime is Ibrahim Ferrer's final album, Mi Sueno, which makes the best case yet for why old singers > young singers.

Currently growing on me:
It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s The Way You Land by Soulsavers, a weird kind of cinematic country-noir project. Not sure if it's great or just weird, but it's interesting...
Easy Tiger by Ryan Adams
Memory Almost Full by Paul McCartney
Volta by Björk (GET THIS ALBUM. IT IS AWESOMENESS COATED WITH YUMMY BADASSNESS) and
IT'S HARD TO PUT YOUR FINGER ON IT; SOMETHING IS WRONG

Seneca - Oneiro

I would describe them as a prog-rock (as they consider themselves), even if it's a broad-as-fuck term. Just found them yesterday, and thus far I'm liking what I hear. Whispers Over Water, Too Early for Tomorrow, and From the Ivory Gate are great tracks.

Other than that... the new pumpkins album. Thankfully it's rock this time, but something about Corgan's vocals just seems kind of... off... in some parts. Otherwise, I love it, even if they don't have Iha. United States is a beast of a song.

I notice that I go through phases of music where I listen to one band or genre for a awhile, then move on to something new. Generally speaking, I like most types of music though, but most rap is terrible, and I detest country.

Current Favorties:
The White Stripes
Modest Mouse
Queens of the Stoneage
Burden Brothers (Lead singer from Toadies)
Shinedown
Stonesour (lead singer from Slipknot)

Last listening cirlce of music:
Mudvayne
Static-X
System of a Down
Slipknot
Marylin Manson
Rage Against the Machine
Nine Inch Nails

Prior to that:
Regina Spektor (Absolutely adore this woman)
Jem
Greenday
Ok Go (Very Fun Sound)
My Chemical Romance

I make a point to download a few new artist's discographys a week, and of course the latest albums that I can get as well. I have the new Linkin Park, about 15 Tom Waits albums, the latest Marylin Manson, and the Beatle's discography in my Zen and ready for listening next week when I go back to work. I need to grab the latest Pumpkins as well.

OK Go was a good find, and I'm a little late getting into The White Stripes and Modest Mouse, but I'm making up for lost time :)

New instrumentals or collections of the instrumental tracks from the older albums? Because I'm interested either way.

I think it's all new.... I could be wrong though, I'm not a huge fan. It seems to all go together.

Matt, try and give "It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s The Way You Land" a shot, I think you'd enjoy it.

On the MP3 player right now:

Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope
Glen Miller - The Essential Glenn Miller - Disc 1
Pixies - Bossanova
Robert Earl Keen - The Party Never Ends - Songs you know from times you can't remember
David Byrne - Look into the eyeball
Chris Smithers - Live as I'll ever be

Looking for some early Devo :)
