World of year zero

Post by Gzette »

Nine Inch Nails: Year Zero

Looks like this one's going to be bizarre. It's a wacky concept album about a dismal future based in the year 2022. A tyrannical government is drugging the masses. People are disappearing from their homes taken by feds in bunny suits. Innocents are labelled subversives for speaking out and bad things are happening to them.

Small bands of resistance are secretly not drinking the water supply, which tainted with Parepin - a drug which is supposed to be boosting immunity in order to combat bioterrorism on home soil, but more than likely is a narcotic meant to subdue the masses. After some time off the drugs they are seeing - hallucinating? a vision of a hand coming from the sky. They are calling this "the presence". The vision is depicted on the album cover and for a brief second on a spooky promotion video on their website.

Here's the album cover.

even more interesting, and what got me really excited about this even though I don't so much like the song "Survivalism" that I heard on the radio is this viral ad promotion campaign.

A month or so ago T-shirts sold at a show in Germany featured a hidden message via different color letters that when put together spelled "I am trying to believe". An enterprising fan then came upon the unsettling http://www.iamtryingtobelieve.com

Members of a fan site echoingthesound.com then uncoverred a series of websites that all tie together painting a sort of Orwellian future. Highlights of this include http://www.bethehammer.com - about an angry sniper, with references to an ominous military outfit 105th airborne crusaders - 105thcrusaders.com which in turn leads to http://www.churchofplano.com (especially funny to me being from Plano, TX: a place where if this could happen it would happen here first).

Many other sites have popped up too, you can check out them pretty easy by going to the new wiki http://www.ninwiki.com and get the real story. Its really fantastic, with new websites that may still remain to be uncoverred!

Been following this closely, not that excited about the music but the concept behind it is fucking awesome.

Here's a little writeup I did for my friends:

---

Here's a summary, for anyone who is interested but doesn't want to wade through the material:

On Nine Inch Nails latest tour shirt, certain letters were highlighted. Arranged, these spelled "I am trying to believe". This led people to iamtryingtobelieve.com, a website about a drug called parepin, that has apparently been introduced into the drinking water by the government at some point in the future. Supposedly it was to ward people against potential terrorist chemical attacks, but the author of the site thinks it has some negative side effects, including loss of energy, clarity and lack of ability to orgasm. He suggests you stop drinking the water to clear your mind, but if you email him you get an automated response that he is drinking the water.

Then, a few days later at a concert, a USB drive was found in a bathroom (unsure if it was actually found or story of it being found was just generated by NIN's marketing) with an MP3 and a link to the website Another Version of the Truth which appears to be the website to a resistance group to this future oppressive government.

More related sites quickly surfaced, both through more USB drives, and clues in the other websites. Be The Hammer (another resistance group, apparently more violent), 105th Airborne Crusaders (military group with deep religious ties that was deployed in the middle east, Church of Plano (major religious organization that appears to have strong political influence, Consolidated Mail Systems (access to several different email accounts), US Wiretap (access to government recorded conversations), Art is Resistance (a non violent resistance movement), Hollywood in Memoriam (a site dedicated to victims of the bombing of LA during 2009), and finally today Secure Broadcast Informatics (a government organization that's a cover for people trying to send data back in time to stop these events from happening.

So today from the SBI site we have learned that all these sites are viewable because they sent the data back 15 years into the past, 02/10/2007 (from 02/10/2022). The basic timeline is America invades/bombs Iran in ~2007/2008, then LA is attacked by a chemical weapon (ricin) in 2009. This leads to mass paranoia and the government establishing complete control, adding Parepin to the water. America gets attacked again, government controls more and more, eventually it culminates in 2022 with people seeing the hand of God (also known as The Presence) reaching down in some places and causing mass hysteria, then SBI sending back the information, then nothing after that is known.

As with all alternate reality stories, the ending is going to suck, because it has to end somewhere, and it won't be fulfilling. However, watching it unfold keeps me enthralled, even if I have very little interest in the album it's promoting.

Yes, it's a little weird, a little too overblown conspiracy wet dream come through, a little too rage against the man, but I think it's extremely COOL.

and

Second, three new updates in the Year Zero sitch: thewaterturnedtoblood.net (site detailing the origins of John of Boston, a religious leader inside the prison system), judsonogram.net (prison he is housed in), and Cedocore.com (the company that makes Parepin).

PS - wtf why are you never on msn anymore?

That is a prety good sight explaining things as they are discovered.

I believe it's the first marketing strategy of it's kind done on this scale. Pretty awesome stuff.

Entire album now available for your listening pleasure at:

http://yearzero.nin.com/

I'm a fan. I'd put it as my 3rd favorite NIN album, with Fragile on top by a long shot, and PHM at 2nd.

album came out yesterday with a funny sticker from "The Bureau of Morality" on the back with a 1800 number to call. When called a message was played stating that I had been marked for subversive acts with various consequences including having my credit ruined LOL. A few of the web pages discovered early from the album leak and a few leaked pics of the booklet went live yesterday too. Exterminal and the creepy Red Horse Vector among some of the better ones.

Personal faves so far are #10 God Given and #4 The Good Soldier and #2 The Beginning of the End.

I'd rank this album for far below third, but its still a shit load better than the shit storm that was With Teeth.

1. Fragile
2. Broken
3. PHM
3.5 And all that could've been bonus disc (kinda rare so I don't really count it as an album per se, but awesome and worth the mention nonetheless!)
4. Downward Spiral
5. Year Zero
6. With Teeth

I've heard good things about the tracks on this album so far, and also the odd bit of info that the disc is black when it goes in, and white when it comes out. Some sort of thermal sensitive color change goin on.

Yeah, I got the thermal sensitive disc. It's cool, but... it stuck to the inside of my stereo so that when the tray came out, the disc was still in there. Then heard a little clatter and joy of joys, I had to take the case off my stereo and dig it out :P

Yeah, I have the thermal disc as well, but my purchase was not from Hot Topic (thank goodness) but Best Buy.
