Heroes Season 1 Discussion *SPOILERS*
Anyone else catch the first episode on Monday?
It's on the same time as MNF which sucks. I forgot all about it but downloaded an Xvid version of it made from an HD source.
I like it! It's not corny at all. The entire first episode is spent introducing the characters that don't realize they have powers yet. Excellent start to this series IMO. I highly recommend you get ahold of the first episode and watch. It may end up another sleeper like Firefly.
The show is surprisingly graphic as well.
They introduced a nice mix of powers in the first episode with almost nothing revealed about the overall plot. Looking forward to episode two next monday.
Download it! It was posted in alt.binaries.multimedia on Monday. It's 357mb. I may host it for a bit on my server if enough people can't get ahold of it.

I liked it too. It was good stylistically, and I'm a sucker for people with special powers.
I think Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (which I also like) is the big show that NBC is banking on this season, and with Heroes as its lead-in, my guess would be that they're somewhat committed to it.

This isn't formatted great but is good news for Heroes. Looks like it did well it's first week:
NBC (households: 8.1/13, #2; adults 18-49: 4.7, #1) pulled in front of the usually-dominant CBS (households: 8.9/14, #1; adults 18-49: 4.4, #2) on Monday thanks to a new "Deal or No Deal" (households: 8.2/13, #5; adults 18-49: 3.8, #6), the premiere of "Heroes" (households: 8.8/13, #3; adults 18-49: 6.0, #1) and a fresh "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" (households: 7.5/12, #6; adults 18-49: 4.5, #4).
Compared with the season premiere of "Las Vegas" (households: 8.0/12; adults 18-49: 4.6 on 9/19/05), last season's Monday, 9:00/8:00c time slot holder, "Heroes" posted an impressive growth of 10% in households and a whopping 30.43% in adults 18-49. As for "Studio 60," week two of the series fell 13.79% in households and 10% in adults 18-49 from its premiere (households: 8.7/14; adults 18-49: 5.0 on 9/18/06).

You Aussies are screwed! I have a friend stuck on that continent* that I've been telling how great the Rome-HBO series is and the first episode was broadcast only a few weeks ago in Australia. What's up with TV down there? I don't think Europe has to wait that long.Zaelath wrote:We're sorry but the clip you have selected isn't available from your location, please select another clip... so we can deny you that too! *ok, I think she likes it and isn't "stuck"

I thought it was boring as fuck and the characters could not have been more uninteresting and dull. I rarely watch TV however, so my standards are probably a lot higher.
Except the Japanese guy was cool and the conversations he had with his friend were funny. I was a little taken aback that they actually used Japanese and not just have them speaking in a funny japanese accent.

It's a bit of a tossup... if I didn't know about Rome back when you posted about it I wouldn't have downloaded it and watched it months ago without ads. Well, ok, that's actually way better than paying HBO money and still getting ads.Winnow wrote: You Aussies are screwed! But, when it does get aired here, it's aired on free-to-air. As is the Sopranos, was Sex in the City, etc. Generally we get everything that rates strongly in the US and don't have to wade through all the other shite.. Sci-fi is still relegated to post 10:30pm timeslots though =/
Oh, and I quite liked Heroes.. but it's suffering from "We want to be the next Lost" writing...
Which also reminds me of Lost..kyoukan wrote: Except the Japanese guy was cool and the conversations he had with his friend were funny. I was a little taken aback that they actually used Japanese and not just have them speaking in a funny japanese accent.

I thought the show was great. TV shows this season are impressing me so far. Jericho is pretty cool and House never lets me down. It looks like Survivor got flack for having racist overtones and is caving to "the man". Anyway, Heroes is on the top of my list of much watch shows this season. Now, to smack MLB around and let them know that the majority of America does not care about baseball on TV and they are fucking over our end of the day programing

I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, with your accent and all, but HBO programs don't have ads over here. They show ads for other HBO shows and upcoming movies between programming, but the actual shows are uninterrupted.Zaelath wrote:It's a bit of a tossup... if I didn't know about Rome back when you posted about it I wouldn't have downloaded it and watched it months ago without ads. Yeah, the way it works here is you pay for cable, and cable still has ads in virtually every case. In addition to paying for cable, you usually pay a la carte for the "movie channels" (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, The Movie Channel, Starz, etc.), and those premium cable channels do not have ads during their programming.

I found this interesting. Seems the actor that plays the kid genius in Heroes has some talent IRL.

A trained classical pianist by the age of three, Gray-Cabey is the youngest person ever to perform at the Sydney Opera Hall. In 2001, he participated in fundraising concerts to benefit AIDS orphanages. After the events of September 11th, Gray-Cabey, with the help of his father, Shawn, and his mother, Whitney, organized a concert in Portland, Maine, to raise money for Afghan children who were displaced by the Taliban's civil unrest. As a result, "48 Hours" did a piece on Gray-Cabey's altruistic nature and piano talents. Soon after, he was featured on "The Tonight Show," "Dateline," "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Good Morning America," which led to his being cast on "My Wife & Kids."
Gray-Cabey is determined to use his talents to make a real influence in the world. He has formed a foundation called "Action in Music" that broadens the horizons of inner city children by bringing them to Africa to visit AIDS victims. His birthday is November 16.
There's no such place, so it's apparently all lies!Winnow wrote:A trained classical pianist by the age of three, Gray-Cabey is the youngest person ever to perform at the Sydney Opera Hall.
He always did seem smarter than the rest of the "My Wife and Kids" cast combined though...

It seemed like there were more commercials last night than there should have been. I think it was probably a result of the limited commercial interruptions on the first episode, they filmed 2 episodes and made episode 1 like 1.25 shows worth, and episode two was .75 worth (including the recap/flashbacks at the beginning).

After a half hour, I felt like I had watched 20 minutes of commercials and 10 minutes of a television program. Had no clue what was going on at that point so I turned it off and cleaned the kitchen. It seemed like there were more commercials last night than there should have been. I guess that's yet another awesome TV show I'll miss out on.

You can always download the episodes off the newsgroups that are commercial free. I'm thinking about doing that from now on and skipping the network broadcasts.miir wrote: I guess that's yet another awesome TV show I'll miss out on.
I'll check the length of the commercial free Heroes episode-2 later tonight.
I just hope that this week's fifteen minute recap of the pilot was for the benefit of new viewers that have come onboard based on talk at the water cooler etc. and not a recurring event.
He's a Japanese comedian IRL. In this case, I don't think they're trying to stereotype asians. They just decided to make the comic book/Sci-Fi geek of the show Japanese.Psyloche wrote:The Japanese kid made me sad. Not all of us azn speak like that
I don't detect any negativity toward asians in Heroes. Besides, he's probably the most powerful "hiro" in the show.
On some other forum, a poster was all happy that the guy from India in Heroes was actually an Indian and someone from another country roleplaying an Indian as I guess has happened a lot in the past.

I quite agree. I don't understand the concern over the asian character's accent. He's supposed to be a native Japanese speaker. Not only that, it doesn't seem like he's been to the United States before, he says his English isn't very good (remember when he called his friend "who speaks English"), and it's not like he was planning a trip to the US before he just kind of showed up here.noel wrote:I quite agree. I'd say that his accent is probably as good or better than anyone's would be in that situation.

I downloaded the second episode and it was 42 minutes long, which is the standard length for an hour long show I believe. It might be 46 though.Sylvus wrote:It seemed like there were more commercials last night than there should have been. I'm not really that impressed with this show so far. It fucking draaaaags. I guess modern TV shows are like that now. It's cheaper to just take one storyline and drag it out for 5 years than it is to have to actually be creative and serialize it. Lost is the same way. I sit there the whole time thinking 'get the fuck on with it already' but even Lost has a mini plot in most of the episodes that has a resolution in the end. This show is just an hour long of nothing happening, and then nothing really happens at the end to make me care about watching it again.
A lot of the super powers are lame as well. Who cares if some retarded 17yo cheerleader can heal herself instantly? She is still a stupid 17 year old cheerleader. What is she going to do to fight crime? That mirror reflection thing is just plain retarded. Where's the guys that shoots lasers out of their eyes and throws cars at bank robbers? A whiny pussy that can fly wouldn't intimidate me very much; he would just be slightly harder to fucking shoot.
I predict that whatever lame 9/11 knockoff event they are going to prevent, they will do it in some totally pedantic and normal way, only throwing in whacky sequences of them doing stupidly unoriginal things with their powers.
And I love how the indian guy steps off the fucking plane into NY and immediately he is a cab driver. No that isn't at all completely fucking racist and stupid.

Then don't watch it. It's as simple as that. Why waste your time with something that you obviously don't like.
Personally, I am liking the way they seem to have taken (so far) the concept of Wildcards in regards to the types of powers and story-telling. The powers appear to be more "realistic" than the general comic book super heroes you will normally see. I do wish that they had either condensed the first two episodes into one, or removed the scenes which were already in the first/pilot episode in order to actually advance the story a bit more in episode two.

Nah, 42 is about how long Lost usually runs. I guess maybe it just felt like so many more commercials because the first one had fewer than usual.kyoukan wrote:I downloaded the second episode and it was 42 minutes long, which is the standard length for an hour long show I believe. I guess that's kind of why I like it. It's not supposed to be Justice League or whatever, where some guy comes along and can do everything and is totally invincible and you sit there going "why is it taking Superjesus more than a week or two to eliminate all crime in the world? He can shoot lasers out of his eyes and lift the island of Manhattan and fly about as fast as the speed of light for fuck's sake! Oh and now he's got 10 friends with some subset of his powers that are helping him out?"A lot of the super powers are lame as well. Some of these people are finding out they can do one or two things a little different than other people, most of them are kids, and they haven't even gotten around to whether they're going to get tights and capes, or fight crime, or what they are going to do. I think it's kind of interesting, and not too far off from the origin of any superhero in any comic book. There's always the issue that explains it that's a little slower than you might like, and in this case they have to do that for like 8 different people in 42 minutes per episode.
I assumed he did that because his dad drove a cab and he's trying to find out who killed his dad, why they did it, etc. He's also like living in his dad's apartment and trying to pick up his research. Following in his footsteps if you will. He also probably needs money to pay the bills, and I would assume that with the number of foreign cab drivers (if comedians are to be believed) that's probably a pretty easy job to jump right into if you're coming from another country. And I love how the indian guy steps off the fucking plane into NY and immediately he is a cab driver. You forget that the first time you see him, he is teaching some sort of paranormal class or the likes. I agree that in this case its not stereotypical at all, but just trying to follow in his fathers footsteps, remember how the license in the cab didn't even have his name, but his fathers. The show did start out pretty slow, however i enjoyed it all. I have a feeling that episode 3 will be the start of a brand new show so to speak.. but i may be wrong. It may take up to 5 episodes to get everything in tact, but i feel like based off previews, they might do it in 3. Its hard to keep this many main characters in tact with a believable story line each in their own story so far.And I love how the indian guy steps off the fucking plane into NY and immediately he is a cab driver. No that isn't at all completely fucking racist and stupid.
This show has great potential, and whether or not it lives up to it is still in the air, but for now, i find its a great show.

I watched the show this past Monday, and I liked it. That being said I agree with Kyoukan that:
I am sick of how shows drag the plot out forever and ever instead of each show standing alone like shows always seemed to pull off in the past.
The last show I really got into was Dark Angel, the show had a storyline, but each show had its own little subplot that was generally closed off that episode, or the next one if it was a two part episode.
I do not want to have some plot started in the second episode and not really find out what the hell is going on with it until the end of the season, that is not quality television to me.

The reason the X-Men were so popular when they first arrived on the scene in the early 80's is because they blended into the crowds sometimes and didn't flaunt their powers. Along with that, Chris Claremont wrote the stories in a way the made you feel you were discovering the powers and growing up with these new "mutants"
There's room for both latex super heroes and more low key type heroes. The best thing that Heroes does is handle the confusion and lack of desire for some (like the psycho alter ego lady, politician, and painting prophet) to even want their powers.
I think Heroes will continue to move along at a slow pace but will pick up for those that require action to be entertained in the next few episodes. Thankfully in the case of Heroes, it looks like most of the viewing audience is ok with the show as it is for the time being.

What is the point of having super powers if you're still a puf with them? The only one that looks even remotely dangerous is internet porn lady, but I don't know how they are going to use her in action sequences if she just blacks out for hours at a time and wakes up with a bunch of dead bodies all about.Sylvus wrote:I guess that's kind of why I like it. Well, in the show's defense, they have been mentioning on the teasers for upcoming episodes that "their powers are getting stronger". I've seen enough so far that I'm interested in it, and I'll probably give it a chance for a while. They introduced mind-reader guy last week, so I'm assuming other people will come along as the show progresses, and people's powers will develop to the point of not being parlor tricks. If that doesn't happen, the show will be kind of pointless and I'll probably stop watching.kyoukan wrote:What is the point of having super powers if you're still a puf with them? And just being able to fly is kind of gay, something better should come out of that or having the brothers on the show will become tiresome pretty quickly.

I'm not really sure how that scene "casts the disposer in an unsavory light, irreparably tarnishing the product", but I'm pretty sure if you turn your garbage disposal unit on, regardless of the brand, and stick your hand in it, you're not going to be very happy about it.
I find that sort of ridiculous. I don't know if there's only one brand of garbage disposal or what, but does anyone who watched that show remember looking at it and going "hey, is that an In-Sink-Erator?!'.Emerson filed a federal lawsuit in St. Louis on Monday, seeking to block the NBC television network from rebroadcasting the pilot episode of the new show "Heroes," which depicts a woman damaging her hand in a garbage disposal made by the company.
The Ferguson-based maker of electric products says NBC Universal Television Studios did not have the right to use the company's In-Sink-Erator brand disposal in the show without permission.
